After the failed attempt at a trade deal for an Ecstasy 101B, I was still itching to scratch that Bogner itch. GuitarGuitar are having a clearance sale, so I've just picked up an "as new" Ecstasy Classic! It should be with me on Wednesday, and has EL34s, the Class A/AB switch option and the wheat grille (which matches my 4x12, how handy!). It also has a shiny chrome grille unlike the regular 101B pictured below.
I've read mixed reviews of the Classic, but at the price it was at (and having a 7 day return policy) it was worth a punt. It should be a mixture of the old 100B (that Hunter has), the Shiva, and the 101B. For my ears and tastes, that should be a real winning combination!
Good job I'm off work this week so I'll have several full days to give it a try out! :D

Oh you crazy man!

I thought the black one was an Uberschall!!! I think I should pay more attention to reading your posts ;-)
-
sound clips or it didn't happen!
-
Yep, once I've got it dialled in I'll try and get some clips. I may even be gigging it on Saturday...
-
good for you :D
-
Nice one Dave! What's really great is that you'll have all these great guitars and amps for when I come up for a weeks holiday to try them out! You'd better get the spare room ready

You mean the amp room?
-
The amp room is my living room!
-
Very nice,
How will this fit in with the MJW amps. I seem to remember you were geting another orion that would cover high gain. Are you planning on geting rid of any to make space for this one?

I've sold my relic combo to Shobet, and the High Gain Orion is currently on 'hold' until I've decided what to do with the credit I've now got with Martin...

sweet :D
all those different versions of the xtc confuse me, I'm not entirely sure which one i tried (other than it had plexi mode) :haha
-
Looks nice Dave. I hope you like. More guitars could be on your shopping list to get the best out all it's different tones!
-
Well, it's here! :D
I haven't taken any pics yet, but it's the same as the one below, with a black grille. I've spent all afternoon mucking about with all the switching etc to get a good base sound for a gig on Saturday and I think I'm there. It'll need bit of an adjustment when it's cranked up a bit, but hopefully it's there or thereabouts.
First impressions? It sounds CHUNKY. Thicker and a bit darker than my MJWs, so I guess it's more modern voiced than vintage, which would make sense. The MJWs are crispy in the upper mids, the XTC is beefy in the lower mids. Neither is better than the other, they're just different.
The switching is superb, really good flexibility for gigging. Should make things MUCH simpler and hopefully more toneful as I'll be using amp gain not a pedal. But the proof is in the pudding I guess, so we'll see how it gets on live on Saturday night!

sounds good. while the one i tried wasn't as modern-sounding as some of the out-and-out br00tz amps I've tried, yeah, it's still probably fairly modern-sounding, as you said.
-
By modern I mean 80s hot-rodded-Marshall kinda modern
-
i'd consider that fairly modern too. just not krank-modern :D
-
Congrats Dave on the new purchase. I will be intrested to here how you get on with that one. I hope it ends up being a keeper.
I have a suspicion though that you will end up geting another MJW as well in the not to distant future. Either way you got some damm nice amps. Can you please post some clips of the amp in action when you have have got used to it?
-
Sure - will do mate! Dodgy recording excuses at the ready...
-
Glad it's arrived safe and well Dave. After all the waiting I hope it does what you want it to! I'll await more detailed reviews as and when mate. 8)

There must be some kind of horrible mistake, I can't seem to find the CLIPS!!!
C'mon Dave! This looks like an awesome amp!

bullshitee. Can't be as good as a MJW. I bet we'll get a very sorry post from Dave on sunday
-
Gimme chance dudes! Only just got it, been busy the last few days off work and will be again tomorrow. I'll see if I can get something done by the end of the weekend.
Can't see this amp getting sold BigB, it's really rather nice...
-
What do you use for recording Dave?
-
Usually a Sony digital camera
I've got a Zoom H2 as well, so I'll try and get something using that...
-
sweet, so i'm not the only one with nice gear but no recording gear
-
Nope
I've got no interest in recording, I just like playing!
-
i wouldn't mind recording a bit, i just have no interest in paying for it. If I could get a recording rig that sounded like the room for like £50, then I'd do it. Problem is you're talking a lot more than that.
But yeah, I'm more interested in playing, too. And for what I imagine I'd have to pay to get a good recording rig, I'd really just rather have another guitar or amp.
-
Nope

:D Me too. I would like to be into recording but have no real motivation to do so - not when I can spend money on guitars n stuff.
-
Once you get into recording and see all the stuff you can do, it'll grab you in the the same way as guitars do! :D

Or scare the living shite out of you because its so $%ing hard to do it well
-
those are two reasons why i stay well away
