I’ve been discussing hard rock and metal mostly on this forum but I’m also a big rockabilly fan. So at some point in my life I’m gonna have to get me a 6120-style guitar. I’m thinking Dean Psychonilly or one of the new Sparrow 6120’s (they’re still in stage of devellopment). Anyway, they’ll need Filtertrons (in a humbucker housing). The onlyone who makes those is TV Jones.
So howabout Bare Knuckle Filtertrons?
I’m sure Tim could make something even better.
I’m currently using a Reverend Wolfman for Rockabilly, AC/DC and a whole lot of other stuff. It sports two hot rodded filtertron style mini humbuckers. It’s a great guitar with a great sound but it’s not ‘that’ sound. To me the ultimate sounding Filtertron is the Holy Grail of pickups.

I reckon that the reall filtertrons ( is the nashville ones i dont know much about them sorry) look great and the covers look really classy. If BKP could get access to a manufacturer of them that would be great, but judging by how rare they seem to be I would be suprised if Tim had a hard time even finding a source.

I'll second Filtertrons - the tone Malcolm Young gets with them is one of my favourites (especially on Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap)
Tim should maybe look into producing those D'Armond pickups that the Harmony semis had on them. I used to have a guitar like that and it was a great sound for the studio (not much of a live guitar though because it was totally hollow like a ES-330)

T V Jones really is the man when it comes to Filtertrons, I've rewound quite a few now but sourcing parts is a real problem and the demand isn't great enough to warrant manufaturing our own. T V Jones is completely geared up for Filtertrons and makes them for Fender now I believe and when it comes down to it no one knows more than him on the subject.

Tim, can you modify and/or rewind my Revtrons (Reverend Filtertrons) so that they sound like the real deal?

If I ever lay my paws on a Gretsch 6120 style guitar I know I'm gonna be sending some pickups in to be rewound. 8) Those guitars are awesome, shame they're so expensive.

Great, I'll start saving up a little money for that. I will let you know when the time comes.
Maybe I won't even need a 6120 anymore after the pickup mods.

Oh, just one more thing. I was also saving up for a Sparrow Rat Rod. It's a flat black les paul with flames airbrushed on it. I'm thinking about putting in a set of Wapigs. Guess I have to get my priorities straight. One thing at a time.
BTW: I didn't steal my handle from the guitar, I've been using the Ratrod name for quite some time :wink:

Tim, I've been thinking about the modifying of my Revtrons. According to Joe Naylor, who designed these pickups, they are wound 20% hotter than the original filtertrons, wich makes them more versitile. More windings also mean more mids wich is why they don't have 'that' sound. I really like the versitility and higher output of these pickups. Rewinding them to filtertron classic specs would give me less midrange, wich I think, will sound cool. But I'm scared that I will lose the high output and versitility.
Will the scatterwinding achieve better balanced mids without losing any of the high output?

Sticking to the same wind, ie amount of turns of wire, but scattering the wind along with a good soak in the wax pot will open up the highend substantially as will winding with plain enamel-this wire has a so much more detailed mid than poly you wouldn't belive it.
I've read various reports from people on the net playing down plain enamel wire saying there's no difference sonically to poly solderable wire. IMHO this is completely wrong-I've wound with both and plain enamel sounds better every time especially in the mids, this effects the whole tonality of the pickup.Solderable poly wound pickups always sound flat and lifeless to me-it's normally a combination of machine winding bringing the capacitence up and the poly wire.

I (after several years) got myself a awesome White Falcon. It came with TV Jones pick-up which i found to be a bit "Honky" and gutless so i fiddled about with differant Filtertrons and then one day i was on e-bay and came across a "Bare Knuckle" Filtertron that had been made for someone but no longer needed so i jumped on it and fitted it into the Falcon. Since then i`ve never looked back
It was $%&#ing awesome
best pick-up i`ve ever had and i`ve been a few.
Its a little thicker in size than a standard filtertron and twice as hot.
I`ve no idea what you guys call it but i would seriously reccomend starting a line of them as they`re the dogs nutz!
Oh by the way i play in a AC/DC tribute and its perfect for that Malcolm sound
No pedals or effect just a Gretsch into a Marshall

Don't think BKP have ever offered a Filtertron, it was most likely a BKP rewind.
Either way, if its a great sounding pickup, then thats all that matters.
btw, Mal's tone is the one I prefer too - Dirty Deeds is the most BADASS tone ever.

How do Stic! I've seen you guys a few times at the Limelight and the 'DC festival in Wales. You guys are pretty good ;) Simon looks scarily like Angus!
I've found the TV Jones pickups to be fantastic, especially the TV Classic. I have one in the bridge of my Gordon Smith SG-1 and it's great for Malcolm tones, especially live with the amp cranked. I've got a neck TV Classic on order at the moment for my Tele as they work really well in them by all accounts. I can't wait for it to arrive and get it plumbed in along with a four-way switch...
Mal's tone is my favourite too. It's the intro to Long Way To The Top that does it for me. Mal's #1 and a JTM45/100. Pure class!

I have no idea why bumping threads is considered a bad thing - Especially by a mod (looking at you ben ;) )
Bumping threads means not starting a new one - which means less threads - which means better indexing - which means faster forum.
Also it means its easier for people to find the information they want if its all in one thread rather than hundreds - Especially with a thread with a title as obvious as this one.

For a Malcolm tone I would normally recommend a Classic + Filtertron. It's nothing more than a normal Filtertron with a couple of more turns on the bobbins for some extra midrange and output. It looks like Tim did the same to this.
Also check out the Gretschpages Forum if you're into Gretsch guitars.

It never came to that. I sold the Reverend and got a Gretsch Power Jet wich is loaded with TV Jones Powertrons.
With all respect to Tim's great work, the TV Jones Powertrons are great and don't need a rewind.

Ummmmmm info about the pick-up?
I can only say that if put side by side next to a Standard Filtertron then this one stands about twice the height
A standard Filtertron reads about 4.5 to 4.7 on my multi meter and this one reads about 12
I`ve spent a lot of time reading and studying Malcolms sound
I even got talking to his amp tech and got a load of info off him
I know Mal has a standard filtertron that he has re-wound with the thickest copper he can get.
Thats it, thats all he does.
He has 12's with a wound g as strings which i use the same gauge
A high action and heavy picks
I`ve had some work done to my Marshall too
Its a JCM 800 which i run as 50 watts, had the pre-amp stage taken out, a few tweaks on the EQ side of things.
Had a switch put in on the back so i can run all 4 EL34's but no at the same time so it still runs as 50 watts.
which basically means i have a fresh set of valves there if anything happens.
I can switch between the two sets. This all runs into a power-soaker and then into the 4 x 12 cab which has 30 watt greenbacks.
this all was done by our amp tech Jesse Hoff. Brilliant guy.
But the guitar is pretty stock, i took out all the wiring and re-wired it so i only have volume and tone for one pick-up.
i did this because i kept knocking the selector switch's and losing it.
I also have two Malcolm Young Signiture Gretcsh's which have basically the same set-up but they`re both fitted with High Sensitive Filtertrons and they`re great but for some reason they`re were'nt cutting it in the Falcon. I think its because the body is hollow.
Anyway, I just wanted to say to Bare Knuckle that what ever they did to this filtertron ( and i know it aint a rewound one because of the thickness of it) then they should do it again. I`d be first in-line for one.

Wow, I didn't know Malcolm had done any work on his pickup. I always thought it was stock and they simply wound the filtertrons a bit hotter at the factory.
Is there anything to be found on the web about Mal's pickup? What gauge of wire exactly and how many turns?

I've heard the same thing years ago about Mal rewinding his bridge pickup with some thick wire to get THAT tone.
