Title: Bon Jovi - When we were beautiful
Post by: Ian Price on June 05, 2010, 02:23:31 PM
Did anyone else watch this last night? I've not finished watching it yet as I was falling asleep whilst watching. One immediate observation I have is that JBJ has a massively rampant ego - obviously you need an ego to get to his position but I never knew he had an ego that big. I'll try to watch the rest of it and make a note to turn the sound off when he comes on screen, which by the looks of it will be most of the programme.

I saw it was on, but I really can't stand Bon Jovi nowadays.  They're not really rock anymore, just some kind of horrible drippy Springsteen-Lite.

I heard some new song of theirs called "Superman Tonight" recently.  It was so utterly limp and boring I actually thought I was going to vomit.

i second everything Philly says, with an extra dollop of vomit!

Slippery When Wet was a brilliant album, New Jersey was very good, Keep the Faith wasn't bad, but ever since it's been just pure, complete, utter shitee

I've got it on the sky+ to watch Ian.  I still love Bon Jovi for all the great songs that I grew up with. Jon's always had an ego, but recently it seems that it has taken over to a large degree & with the problems that Richie has recently suffered seem to have allowed it to come to the front.

I will watch & comment further

didn't see this show but i did see them in '88(i think) to accompany a mate who was passionate about them.i liked living on a prayer, but hadn't heard much else and two things stood out.it was the loudest concert i've been to(above all the old school bands) and ritchie sambora was an incredibly good player who projected his sound very well....... erhh  not really listened to them since

Indeed it has - the comments from some of the other band members were very interesting. The guy with the big curly blonde hair (the keyboardist, can't remember his name) had to stop himself a few times - it was so obvious that he wasn't happy with the way JBJ ran the group.

He did quickly say that as it was so successful who was he to question the leader. If someone could guarantee me that much money I might be inclined to swallow my pride and agree!

^ if anything that's maybe the best of both worlds- you get to take the moral high ground and disagree with the band's direction, but still pocket the pay cheque.

i haven't seen it but i like bon jovi

Loved their early stuff - was a big fan of the first 3 albums

New Jersey was pants - trying too hard to be Springsteen

Keep the Faith was good but albums after that had 1 good song each and the rest was dire

They moved too far away from their hard rock roots and lost the edge they had

7800 farenheit was a much better album than people realise but it suffered with poor production
Some really good guitar work on it

Hmmm, sounds more like a complete sell-out to me  :? .  But at a good price.  :P

Pretty much agreed, but for me the cut-off point was the end of side one of Slippery.... :

Side 1 (Magic):  Let It Rock, You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer, Social Disease, Wanted Dead or Alive
Side 2 (Tragic):  Raise Your Hands, Without Love, I'd Die for You, Never Say Goodbye, Wild in the Streets

Since then they've been uniformly shite.

(I went to see them on the 7800° Fahrenheit tour, 25 years later a friend of mine still accuses me of being "their biggest fan".  :| )

Actually - I agree with that Philly

Were you at the Astoria Theatre gig  on the 7800 tour where the power blew out on stage half way through Roulette and Jon came out with an acoustic guitar and played Tom Petty songs instead

I was!   "Anyone know any Tom Petty?"

But wasn't it the Dominion Theatre?  I saw a few bands there that year - Bon Jovi, Mama's Boys, Roy Buchanan's last UK gig.  Since then it's only been showing musicals.  :(

OK, I just listened to Slippery When Wet on Spotify.... still feel the same as I did 20 years ago about that dodgy side two (although "I'd Die for You" is actually pretty rockin').

What I hadn't realised until now is that "Without Love" is an absolutely blatant ripoff of Perry-era Journey!  :o  The difference being that Journey songs are actually good.

it's a sell-out where you can look at yourself in the mirror. As long as you don't look too hard. and the mirror is kinda steamed up.

I caught a fair bit of this programme (to-ing and froing from the Dukes of Hazzard film ) and came to the same decision of JBJ that alot of you guys seem to mention (and his keyboard player too).

'Selling out' or not, I'd much sooner be doing what he's doing and playing gigs all over the world for a d!ck like JBJ than what I currently do which is 45+ hours a week in an office for minimum wage!

Yup, I think the band are simply doing a job (albeit not a normal 9-5), getting to enjoy themselves and then they have opportunities they wouldn't have before. Sambora's projects means he is meeting loads of big guitarists, and the Keyboardist now has time to do his musical thing he was on about

A guy in work is going to see them tonight at the O2.  Kid Rock supporting, apparently.

There was plenty of Journey and Aldo Nova blatantly ripped off by Bon Jovi in the early days
They did a good job of it though - I still like the first 3 albums

Blimey, I'd forgotten Aldo Nova!  I've got a few of his on vinyl.

I ended up listening to the first three Bon Jovi albums on Spotify yesterday - I think the first holds up best, but 7800° Fahrenheit has some good stuff!

Aldo played keys on  a track or two on the first album as a favour

Years later Jon returned the favour and enabled Also to release the Blood On The Bricks album

Aldo's first album remains the classic though

Listen to the guitar solo on She Dont know me  (from Jovi's first album) - ripped straight from Neal Schon - and later stolen by UK rockers Shy as an intro on their track Hold On to Your Love from the Brave The Storm album

1980s geekiness getting the better of me

I was in school when "Keep the Faith" came out and loved it to bits! Great album and some great guitar playing from Mr Sambora on it. Sadly, everything later was a heap of .... .

I liked These Days which came out after Keep the Faith, a bit of a change of pace but some very nice playing on that album.

I was a big fan of Sambora's Stranger in this town album too, it's what made me want to play guitar in the first place.
