Title: Pickups for Les paul
Post by: Les Yuval on June 14, 2010, 08:40:21 PM
Hello,
I am using a Tokai les paul and i want to change her pickups.
I play mostly Thrash metal, guns n roses, iron maiden and garry moore
Which pickups do you suggest me?
(I would like a sound that will be good for hard/classic rock and for metal)
I can get a cold sweat neck pickup for a low price.
What do you suggest me?

Mmm... Cold Sweat ?

NB : Wild guess and half-joking - never played the Cold Sweats and don't do metal. But the real experts should ring in pretty soon now !-) In the meantime there's another current thread that you might want to browse here: http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=21500.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=21500.0)

And welcome onboard BTW.

Miracle man, all the way. Perfect in a les paul for what you describe.

I really liked the miracle man!

Should i buy a full set of miracle man, or only bridge pickup?
And what about the cold sweat?

The miracle man is perfect!
And its indeed perfect for thrash metal. The tone it delivers is very much alike the tone on Death's "the sound of perservenerance" a piece of chuck's souls lives inside each miracle man.

I just made a little medley for you just so you can get the idea :)
Just excuse my playing. Im ill atm and for some weird reason, my high D keeps going out of tune today.
But here it is :)

Gear-
Bc rich mockingbird w/ mahogany body, spalted maple top, neckthrough etc w/ Miracle man bridge
Pod farm.

The Cold sweat neck gets a LOT of love on here - you can't go wrong with that. MM bridge, CS neck would be an awesome combination.

I'd pick a holy diver or nailbomb over the miracle man to keep the versatility

Versatility is for poor people :D Just get more guitars

No, get a miracle man. It's plenty versatile enough, unless you play a lot of jazz and blues. Do you?

the nailbomb is just as metal sounding as the miracle man and still more versatile
the holy diver is a great metal pickup as well and even more versatile

well, you could, but you did ask us for our opinions and you got just that!

If in doubt (and even if not in doubt), ask Tim - go to front page of website and find his contacts there. He knows his pickups better than anyone else.

Not a lot but yes, I do.

For bluesy and jazzy tones, you'll need something more in the vintage range - low to medium output, alnico magnets. FWIW, you can also get some serious rocking (and I'm not talking about 60s classic rock tones here - I mean Slash / Gary Moore etc) with vintage or vintage alnico pups. But I'm not sure how they would work for thrash metal.

what about the rabel yell?

Should work fine for hard-rock / hair metal tones and still be usable for more bluesy stuff. The Crawlers might be a good solution too if you want a broad range from warm soft jazzy  to powerfu, cuttingl hard-rock / hair-metal tones.

Don't be fooled, you can get thoroughly stuck into brutal hardcore with a black dog, in the right axe ;)

We can't make that decision for you!

a) ask Tim for his advice

b) follow it.

c) if not b), buy the rebel yell and enjoy, or exchange if it's not quite right.

Simples!

what amps and fx devices are you using?
is the tokai a mahogany one or an alder one (chinese/korean)?

My Tokai is made in japan, it has Mahogany body.
My amp is Krank rev jr pro 20W without effects.

nice
for that rig and your needs, I'd pick the holy diver
unless you want something really aggressive

the diver has a lot of punch, not insanely tight, but tighter than most alnico pickups I've heard (except the nailbomb), great clean tone, smooth leads, even easier to pull pinch harmonics than the miracle man
it's a wonderful rock/metal pickup
just like the rebel yell, but punchier, fatter and more balanced

the nailbomb is a bit less versatile, has an edgier top end, less midrange and a more focused and aggressive response
like a miracle man, but less extreme on the lows and highs
