Title: Gibson Explorer
Post by: Explorer2010 on June 27, 2010, 03:03:06 PM
Hey guys I'm new to this forum, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendatons for possible bare knuckle pickups to put in my explorer. The guitar is only 2 years old. I play a lot of 80s rock type stuff in a cover band. Any suggestions would help!

If you list a few bands/songs that have a tone thats in the ballpark area your aiming for it will be a lot easier to make recomendations.

Also listing the guitars woods and construction will help.

for 80s rock in an explorer I'd go with the Cold Sweat set

Riff raffs are also nice in Explorers.

Can you name some songs you do?

I agree with the Cold Sweat recommendations - good in all that mahogany.

Have you got the 500T and it's friend in there at the moment? If you like the general vibe it has already, but want "better", I think I was recommended Cold Sweat as well a couple of years ago.

Instead I went a different route, using pickups I already had in other guitars.

Riff Raffs - these worked very well. In fact, I think I posted a "they're never moving again..." at the time.

Mississippi Queens. The guitar the Riff Raffs came out of received these initially. Then one day I swapped the MQs into the Explorer to see what would happen... and they haven't moved since.

I find the MQs do a good enough "humbucker" job for what I want, and they just fit me and this guitar so well. However, I'm a blues and 70s-rock sort of guy. They might not be enough for 80s rock, you'd probably want to rule out MQs.

I'd happily try to to use Riff Raffs for it, but I suspect that Cold Sweats will get you closer (I've no experience of them though)
