Title: Smashing pumpkins tone
Post by: smashing_chains on July 12, 2010, 07:00:38 PM
Hi guys, looking for humbuckers to go in my Gibson SG that can emulate smashing pumpkins distortion/fuzz, a la siamese dream. Also I know I'm being lazy but also a little clueless when it comes to spacing, conductor, coil and leg, so any help there would also be greatly appreciated. I'm playing into a Mesa/Boogie F-30 and my main distortion pedal is a big muff pi asd well as the amps own channels.

Thanks in advance
Alex

I had an sg once, its standard spacing, short leg for the neck pickup and long leg for the bridge one.

Nailbombs are a good all rounder but if your sg is pretty dark they might not sound that good. Rebell yell could be great pickups for some versatility. I mounted some on an esp eclipse that is not much thicker as an sg. Sounds really punchy, clear, fat and tasty. Really can try to play anything on those.

I'd stay with high output pickups from the contemporary range if you don't want it to be to muddy for high gain riffing on big muff as if I remind well the pumpkins sound is kinda modern and tight.

Most SGs are standard spacing, long leg and braided 2 conductor - some of the more modern series have a wide spaced bridge so it's always worth getting the ruler out and checking. I'd agree with the Rebel Yell recommendation too - perfect for SP tone.
