Title: OK, what have I done this time! (Wiring question)
Post by: horsehead on July 17, 2010, 10:40:54 PM
I always seem to make a mistake somewhere & can't figure it out, so I'll add to my stupidity by posting my latest c--k-up. I thought I'd got it done right (typical of me) for vintage wiring, but I'm getting nothing through when I touch the pickups with a screwdriver....can't figure it

It looks fine from what I can see.

Have you checked the selector switch and output jack?

Measured the pickups resistance on the wire when they aren't soldered to the pots & getting the correct reading (11k & 12k), but when soldered they are giving off only about 5.5....really has got me stumped

Very odd.

You're getting signal out via a cable, yes?  That's how you've got the 5.5k readings?

You've got a lot of braided cable there, make sure none of it is touching the hot signal - pickup connections, switch connections, hot jack output etc.

finally sorted it, it was part of the braid on the hot end of the jack, thanks for the help Dave

Glad you sorted your problem. I always find that the braided wire bites me in the bum. I got sufficiently distrustful that when I put the Mississippi Queen into my Tele I soldered some regular push-back cable onto the braid and then covered the rest of the braid with shrink wrap to prevent myself from another grounding problem. I could then used the soldered on cable to connect up as you would with regular wiring. If I were better at soldering and electronics this wouldn't be a problem but until I become less ham-fisted this is the kludge that works for me.
