Title: Just Sacked Our Bass Player
Post by: MrBump on July 27, 2010, 11:13:26 AM
... by email.  I know, it's the cowards way out, but time was marching on and the drummer hadn't managed to get around to it.

Had a secret jam with a new bass player last week, and it was a revelation - far better now.  I had comments on here about the bass being lost in the mix for some of our recorded tracks, and the reason was that the bass playing was so poor that we buried it.  So he's in the band and Belinda is out.  Such a shame, as she's a lovely person.  Just not the bass player for us.

First gig with the new lineup at St Annes Castle in Essex on Sunday.  It'll only be the 3rd time we will have played with the new bass player!

Scared she'd beat you all up?  :P

Not so much the threat of violence, it's just that she's so nice!  Like sacking your mum.

(not YOUR mum, obviously, rather "ones" mum...)

Ah, that's a shame - I did have a feeling, from those recordings, that the reason there was not enough "thump" is that she's not the sort of bass-player to provide the thump that you guys need...

But email... ... have you no shame?

Email is the way to go.  That's how we sacked our previous singer and we haven't looked back.

My mum's been dead since 1976, so getting sacked would be the least of her worries....

(Not a joking matter I know, but I don't think she'd mind)

People get dumped by email and text so why not get them out of a band in the same way.

Nah... let's make the Bumpster feel as guilty as possible

Hope the gig with the new bass-player goes well :D

Glad the band's better now though, it's rubbish playing in a band if you feel there's a weak link, and everyone else plays worse because of it.

But really, folks need to get a spine. It's a totally cr@p way to let someone go. From anything.

They're going anyway, and will be p*ssed off, so the message is the same regardless of the way it's delivered.

What's the point of pointing yourself in a confrontational face-to-face situtation?

I'd be fine to be sacked from a band via email, so horses for courses mate!

I think it's also high context dependent.

Unilateral points of view are often more damaging that people being cretins. With that said, the Beatles WERE sh!t, mashed potato is evil, Telecasters are the forbidden fruit of Julian Clary and Pat Butcher, and all traffic wardens, without exception, are fair game for beatings. But hey, every rule has its exceptions. ;)

Mashed potato is evil?

Even with a bit of horseradish or wholegrain mustard?  :?

Wow!!!  I almost UNIVERSALLY disagree with you!!!

She emailed back, and was very nice about it, adding to the Bumpsters guilt...

Saying that, I'm with Dave - if I've gotta go, send me an email rather than all that embarrasing face-to-face stuff.

The different viewpoints here are interesting.  For what it's worth, I agree with nfe - sacking (and dumping) seem to me like things which should be done face to face.  That said, I'm the retiring type and would find it very uncomfortable.

I think sacking by e-mail in general sucks but in this case there's a serious factor to consider: she's a woman.

Can you deal with the tears, the being told that this band was her last chance to feel good about herself and the inevitable "it's not you, it's (us)" conversation followed by feeling guilty?

Added problem here - now you've sacked the bass player, where are you going to get a van from?  Who's going to drive? It's complex situation that you're in...

... and the guilt piles on...

She also had her own rehearsal room, and she made the tea.

The new bass player doesn't make the tea...

I kicked a traffic warden up the arse when he gave me a parking ticket. Now had I had that ticket via email or text he would have avoided a confrontation with me and my size 10 boot up his jacksie.

Bands a hard. That mishmash I was involved in finished cos the bass player fell out with the drummer. 14 months of rehearsing over cos of some grudge. Now the pair if them are emailing me trying to get me involved in separate projects. At least the drummer has a kit now. Probably from cash converters.
If the girl in your band was holding you back Mark then you have to do what's best. It sounds like she is ok with it. She can learn and improve her playing if people Re honest

I have mixed feelings. It depends on the person and the context. If it were me being sacked then an email would be fine -I wouldn't care about the method but about being sacked? yes possibly- but there are people and times when you just have to grit your teeth. When, years ago, the drummer and I decided to get rid of the other guitarist, we called and said we need to talk. When we got to his house he'd misunderstood and got all his gear out for a rehearsal and his clinging hero-worshipping wife had put out cakes and made a nice pot of tea and we felt awful and as nicely and as matter of factly ( is factly a word?- who cares?) we did the deed. It was very upsetting for us all as we liked him but there was no getting away with it, he wasn't suitable and we had made a mistake when we'd auditioned him ( he could play three or four songs really well but after that, nothing).
Anyway, Mr Bump, I hope your band goes on from strength to strength and that your "ex" finds another band.
It is funny- my own band had a change of line up and dynamic at the beginning of the year and the new guys are pretty good and there are grumblings about the rhythm section ( both good mates of mine and original members) and talk of a possible side project with me and the two new guys. That'll be interesting!

A girl once broke off a 5 year engagement with me via text. It was shite.

Yes, that's pretty grim.

I've quit a band by text, though..... which isn't quite the same thing.

Yes.. I think it was the worse thing that happened to me so far. I was abroad on tour too.

However, with the benefit of a few years distance on the situation, it was for the best we split up before we had the kids that were planned.. Just like Johnny says.

Back on topic, it is a bit dodgy to fire some from a band by text, but it all depends on the situtation, how long the band was together, any friendships etc etc. I would prefer to be told face to face myself, but a long email explaining stuff would be ok too.

I am not sure about the sacking by email thing.  If the person is an absolute idiot and does not turn up, or turns up too druck to play then they deserve what they get but if they are a nice person that is just not cutting the mustard I think they may deserve a little more.
In this  case im glad that she has been back in touch. You must have worded  the email rather nicely!  Has for the  band if you got a better player that is a nice guy that has got to be great news.  I hope it all works out for you.

Well, just got back in from our second rehearsal with the new bass player, and it was definitely the right decision!

Our drummer called the old bass player after our singer sent the email - she was upset, but OK, so I guess that's OK.  Best thing for her and the best thing for the band, really.

First gig with the new lineup on Sunday!

I hear you. having recently outed my rythm player for the last 3 years and bass player. i did it by phone, but the way it was done, it was almost too easy. i guess it was their time to be out! we recently got a new bass player who is frankly much better, and we're planning on replacing my rythm and harmony guitarist by a keytar wielding buddy :D for original compositions, it works. for a cover band, i don't think it'd be as simple.

it's the way it is now i guess, everyone's tweeting and texting, might as well do the dumping this way. it's ''hip'' ;)

have fun on your gig, a cool lineup definitely brings a new energy the the band. i haven't headbanged and loved the tunes as much as the recent rehearsals :D hope it's the same for ya

hey, it's been so long since i've seen a keytar player it's almost a novelty these days!

but i didn't kick out the rythm player for this reason. he was on a constant party binge and just not pulling his weight anymore. the keytar thing came after. ;)

So, we played our first gig with the new bass player last night, and it was pretty damn good.  I think that everyone is playing with more confidence and flair now, becuase it feels like a proper collection of musicians.

Want a new guitar though...  desperately.

I can possibly help on the new guitar bit... just stop paying the Council Tax, or something, and then sneak out and get one! ("I borrowed it off our new bassist - he's a really nice bloke...")

+1, its the way I've always done things (face to face) - there is no reason for it to get ugly.  You just give your reasons and put them carefully, spare the guy's feelings.

Just discovered (from the "What is we listening to thread") that it's a strat you're after.

First... Good Man!

Second, assuming it's still available, check out the Feline/Brian Eastwood Strat http://www.felineguitars.com/Guitar_sale.html (http://www.felineguitars.com/Guitar_sale.html). It looked very nice at the meet the other week. I fingered it briefly, but didn't play it cos it's not what I'm after at the moment and I didn't want to get tempted.

Nice neck, if I remember right.  Fairly chunky '60s shape, and very glossy.

Yeah, the finish is stunning.

I'm kinda fixated on my two Roadworns at the moment, so even my own "newer" looking strat seems a little odd to me at present. And I don't usually gravitate towards "sparkly" finishes, and it's not actually "my kind of red" (whatever that is!)... BUT this one is a very tasteful example of "sparkly" and extremely good looking guitar.

When the right person meets that instrument, I think she's an absolute bargain. I loved all the Feline stuff at the meet - but that guitar was the most dangerous one to me and my wallet (so I had to ignore her!!!)

Go and visit Jonathan, ask him for a formal introduction, see if she whispers naughty things in your ear... you know you want to!!
