Title: Tuner pedal positioning
Post by: Doadman on August 02, 2010, 01:47:08 PM
I've just ordered an Ibanez LU20 tuner pedal and I was wondering where it should go in the effects chain. Should I put it before the amp or somewhere in the loop or doesn't it matter?

Definitely before the amp.  It depends what else is in your chain as to where to put it, but as it's true bypass it can pretty much go anywhere...

Before the amp I'm running Weeping Demon into an MXR Super Compressor, then into a Hardwire Metal Distortion pedal and finally into Bad Monkey.

Weeping Demon = wah?

Then I'd go Wah -> Tuner -> Compressor -> Distortion - Bad Monkey

I have my pitchblack in the loop of my Renegade, and it's possibly the WORST place to put it...

Why does the Wah go before the tuner and everything else after it?

Why does the Wah go before the tuner and everything else after it?

That way, the tuner 'sees' a boosted , but not clipped or modulated signal. It gives it bigger ears !  :)

Wah's also like to see the direct guitar signal.  Not too much of an issue with a true bypass pedal, assuming it's really true bypass.  Some pedal manufacturers bend the truth  ;)

Dave makes a good point about certain pedals liking to 'see' the guitar direct - fuzzes can be fussy in this respect and I need to keep my own fuzz at the start of the chain to sound right (doesn't like buffered effects driving it, i.e. Boss).

I used to get a weird problem with a Korg tuner - unless it was plugged directly into the guitar out it would sometimes tell me I was a 5th out, as though the higher gain was emphasising a particular harmonic.

The less stuff you have before the better. Only exceptions might be a clean boost or eventually a compressor.
