So, it's about this time of year that my mind turns to P90 pickups...
I gigged with my Yam SG & Mules last night - since replacing our bass player, our sound has gotten heavier, and I'm finding the Blackguard Flat 50s a little too clean. The Mules are great, but they're a little too thick - kinda classic Les Paul sounding.
I like the crispness of my Tele, but I'm thinking that P90 pickups would give me that sharp brightness, with a little more warmth, brightness and mid range.
Does that sound about right?
Also, what's the difference in sound between the BKP 90/91/92s?
Mark.

Have a look/listen to Hunter's clips here for examples of the BKP-92 (bridge) and BKP-91 (neck):

^ Must have missed that, cheers PQ.
Interesting - I thought that the BKP92 would be more gain-y than that, and less clear when clean...
I suppose that it's still sub 9ohm resistance, so I guess still RELATIVELY tame...
Sounds nice - think that I still need to hear more though...

Agreed
BKP92 is a great hard rock pickup

OK, maybe not TAME...
But in my mind I get the P90 range suggests to me LO/MID/HI gain... And the 92 doesn't seem gainy... Maybe I was expecing Warpigness.
Sooo... in terms of gainyness, which of the BKP90 range is closest to the lower output humbuckers? Or is that a silly question? My Mules give me the gain that I want, they're just a little too full.

That'd be the Pig-90....

BKP90 =mule power , just not quite so full
BKP92 = Miracle Man/Cold Sweat/Rebel Yell kind of power (from my experience) - was great
BKP91 = somewhere in-between - maybe Black Dog/Emerald/Abraxas territory

I like this description!!

That's cool, Jonathan, and kinda what I was thinking...

Whenever I grab that LP Special with the Ps on it I start to play like a berserk, make faces, bang my head and get into a bad fight with the guitar. These pickups are from the devil!

- awesome, I'm all in favour of that...
It's the dirty clean that I'm after though (as well as obscene filth...)
I suspect 91s might be the way to go...

i have a p91 with alnico IV in the bridge of my sg classic. it sounds awesome but doesn't have a ton of low end (as expected). i can imagine one with an alnico V would be a little more raunchy.
