Title: Highest output bridge single coil...relative to clarity
Post by: Pierre on December 13, 2005, 12:00:33 AM
This xmas I want to treat myself to a second BKP and as I only have one humbucker in my 2 guitars, it'll be one (or two!) single coils. Of course my choices are the Sinner and Trilogy suite.
I don't know much about Single coils unfortunately. Which of these would represent the best clarity/output ratio compromise, and which has the most perceivable output and midrange? The guitar is all basswood with maple/rosewood neck, front loaded. At the moment it has Cool Rails/OBL450L/Jackson J100. I'll bring the OBL to the neck and the CR to the middle position, as well as most likely get another Sinner/Trilogy and put it in the middle position of the model 4 (which has the Miracle Man).
Tight bass is best of course ( ;) ) and a lot of mirange is a MUST. Apart from that I'm open to most choices. Oh and more power than a CR at least. I want something with a lot of balls.
Thanks if you can help!

Trilogy/Sinner Set.

I have the Uber wound versions in my Strat and they are very beasty, loads of mid range.  I have a ash/maple guitar and it is very, very bright, which may not be as apparent in your guitar, other than that, I can't recommend these pickups more, they get all the usual Strat tones and then some!

Andy!

Mhmm... I'm thinking a Hotrails may be what I need too, except for the brightness. The fact that the BKP aren't noise cancelling scares me and I don't know exactly just how hot they are. Basically a BKP would be cheaper than a brand new Hotrails (woot!) but not than a second hand one.

Have you heard a hotrails?  Their only good feature is they are hum-cancelling.  If you want a single coil sound, then get a real single coil!  Yes you will get some hum, but so does everyone else who uses them.  As Tim says, it is part of the single coil sound.

I don't want a humbucker more than a single. I don't see SC size humers as Single Coils, but as standard humbuckers. Just smaller in size. I can't get a new pickguard (well it'd cost me about 90 pounds since it's not a standard Strat pickguard). I just want high output and clarity.

Look at this thread before you buy the hotrails:

I put a set in a Strat - not impressed.

LOL, very true!
I never used true single coils before I had my Irish Tour.
Now there is no going back!!!!

The BK single coils are very quite anyway and they smoke the Hotrails!!

I don't necessarily need a humbucker sound, nor a single coil. I just want the closest thing to my sound :)

I had a Hotrails bridge pickup in a Strat-style guitar. It was interesting; very hot compared to the other single coils I had in the neck and middle at the time. But it didn't sound as good as the Sinner I have in a guitar right now. Nor did it sound as good as a full-sized humbucker, IMO.

You're not gonna get people recommending Duncans on this site, but in all honesty the BKPs seem to sound better than Duncans every time.

If you really wanna banish your skepticism buy one of each and A/B them, then sell the one that doesn't suit you.
