Wonder how many of my friends and colleagues will bite the dust this year?

Theyve recently got rid of 300 evening staff from each of the three NHSBSA branches where i work and are also whittling away at the managers as i type this.
I hate uncertain times like this.
On friday we all got a memo saying the cuts we have made so far will get us through until january 2011 where there will be further cuts and this will happen on a yearly basis for the next 7 years due to the public sector cuts put in place by the new government....

Oh, fun times! Having been made redundant twice last year, I am currently bricking it after they announced cuts in the NHS. Having not been there long, I am assuming they work on a last-in, first-out policy. That's how it worked at my last two jobs. :?
Just trying really hard to become as indispensable to the NHS as possible, applying for loads of courses etc to make sure I am better qualified than other people in the same role as me. I just hope it works, I can't be unemployed again, I'm still trying to cope with the mountain of debt from last time! :lol:

Which part of the NHS do you work in? some parts are going to be unnafected unfortunately for me i work in the BSA that reimburses all the hospitals, chemists & doctors so they hold the largest portion of the NHS budget so it seems everyone has huge targets painted on them currently.
With the night staff where i am that was just a countrywide thing they got rid of all night shift and all night shift managers to cut back on costs.
The day managers that have gone were the last in first out scenario, it just happens at the division im in the two managers had been there under 2 years so they got now redundancy pay out whatsoever.
Also to put your mind at ease the weekly reports we get said the cuts have settled until at least January, I arent sure if this is company wide or just the sector im in.

NHS redundancies are specific to role. It's generally not about pure numbers, but more a case of "is there really a need for your job?". Also last in first out isn't usually how it works as it's generally senior staff or people in very narrow focus jobs who go. They also go on performance, especially sickness (which is handy as it's notoriously difficult to manage in the health service).

My wife works in the public sector, and it's been announced that in her particular department they're looking to make 40% job losses. Forty-fricking-percent!!!
She works with vulnerable and disaffected young people; expect there to be MASSIVE social problems over the next 10 years...

Yeah man, we're all propper fooked.
Luckily enough I don't work in the public sector, but my work is dependent on new things being built of which I can see this slowing down dramatically. Luckily my (big) projects last for a couple of years so I might be able to ride out the worst of it, but it's worrying times for all.
Most of my family are in the public sector. My mum, brother and his wife are all getting pay freezes but my old man is one of the only people who works in the public sector that is having a pay rise. Who says there's no money in being a cleaner :lol: The wife recently applied for a job (public sector again) only to recieve a letter saying that they were no longer to fill the position due to bidget cuts which has left us £450 a month down as her maternity pay has now dried up :(
Still, give it 5 years and we might all be able to buy a house again. I think the double dip recression is inevitable as all recessions are (as are house prices which follow it very closely). All the quantative easing did was stretch it out for longer rather than fix the problems. I think it may have had an effect if it was continued, but we'll never find out now.

At my place in particular the redundancies were made on the basis of who would be cheaper to get rid of.
People that do far worse jobs in the management dept were safe because it would cost £40k+ to get rid of them because they had been there that long
however they were told they would be included in the target groups next time if things dont pick up

My industry went through sometihng similar to this when it was privatized (thanks Thatcher :x). They ended up getting rid of all the people who were on a lot of money to save costs. Then they realised that they had just got rid of all the knowledge and hired them back as consultants (at about twice the cost). A lot had set up consultancies with their nice big redundancy packages.
One of my mates was recently diagnosed with rather agressive MS and told to stop working as physical exersion will make him deteriorate. Now the social have stopped his money as according to thier questionaire (and not the very specific letter from the doctor), he is able to work. Sadly due to budget cuts they've stopped both of the busses through my village so he's going to have to cycle to work but this isn't taken in to account. Apparently, he can work until he pretty much can't walk any more, then they might give him disability.

its all down to how you fill in those forms, the problem being that people in that position generally want to be positive and tend to want to put that they can still do stuff rather than face whats actually happening to them. the current system doesnt really take into account conditions that deteriorate or as variable as MS so you really have to answer them for the bad days and put any positivity to one side. I am not saying exaggerate - but if the doctors and consultants are saying you cant work then i dont see it as dishonest to answer the questionnaire appropriately
been through it with my ma, who really never wanted to give up work and kept having to move to less strenuous jobs, then realising most jobs will create enough stress to cause regular attacks and make work impossible

Very true indeed Wez. Hope your mums OK, it's a very difficult situation to be in and all the cr@p that you have to deal with can be as bad as being ill bit. They've certainly stressed him out considerably.
I feel sorry for the poor bloke, I have to give him a lift to the hospital and was there when they told him what he has. He's had a couple of attacks in front of his lad and in typical dad fashion is more worried about the boy than himself.
The social filled out the form for him and now he's in a world of bother. He's not had any money (as they had originally agreed to pay him) for over six months now. It's a bloody good job he inherited his house otherwise he'd be out on the street. He's had to take in a lodger to make ends meet.
I think that things are going to be getting a lot worse in the short and medium term. Lets hope they don't go back to the 80's and cut the school budgets so they all have holes in ceilings again........ oh hold on, haven't they already done that?

It's getting really hard to keep on top of everything, so I think I might be ok for the moment. Otherwise, if they get rid of any housekeepers, I can see the standards of Hospital cleanliness taking a dive.

Because of the dire state of affairs and hellish prospects long term, the work I was getting doing a couple days in a music shop has dried up too (no one's buying PA's when they think their staple gigs might dry up...) :x
Hope things work out for everyone else that's struggling. I'm going back into education in a week though I'm not entirely sure how I'm actually financing it yet...

Ouch! That's a lot of out-of-work people! I'm sorry to hear that mate, I hope something else comes up for you.
Jeez, when I was made redundant I went on benefits for the first time in my life, and it was horrible! If 250 people are getting made redundant from this site or that, that's a lot of people going on to Jobseekers / Housing etc. How the hell do the Government keep doing this? Surely there's a reason why people say "learn from your mistakes"?

Well we can all blame the Condem alliance for this - most prudent people saw that massive cuts by central government just after a recovery was starting would land the country in a double dip, but the snide Eaton/Oxford educated smarmies like Osborne and Cameron decided that being little Tory boys would make them look good to their core voters with the usual effect of conservative governmnents - hard working people suffer whilst the rich sit easy.
What really galls me is that I voted for the Liberal party because I thought they might unseat my obnoxious local labour MP - Nearly 100 years out of government and they drop all principles for the political equivalent of 40 pieces of silver. Scum.

'Figures' showed that what Labour were doing was starting to work. We had growth around march till june then Cameron and his band of brown noses decided to make cuts every where and quickly as possible, we're already seeing the effects of what they've decided to do even before VAT has risen .
Yeah it was inevitable that cuts would have to be made some where but they should of at least given things a chance to grow more before they start going all gung ho on us.

This is why I work freelance - I'd rather work 3 month contracts than take a permanent job, better to grab the money and run to another job instead of sitting round waiting for the axe to fall.
I've pretty much been doing the same thing. I would like a regular job but there just aren't any around. If there is one advertised you have to compete with 100's if not 1000's of other people who are probably a lot more suited to the job than you are.
Hopefully I'll be getting some work on film sets soon though :)

I'm in Local Authority, and (luckily) 2 people have resigned this month, so we've already saved quite a lot from that. And also another senior manager is thinking of leaving. So it looks like we may make it to 2011 Q2 without any redundancies.
Although i'm not sure how we'll cope after then. We've been through a restructure recently and really stretched the budget all we can. Uncertain times really suck :(

hi mate, that's really good of you thank you. I have known since february that this was coming so I already have something else in the pipe line. I am trying to see it as an opportunity to explore a path I otherwise probably wouldn't be brave enough to go down. I feel pretty fortunate that I have had plenty of time to get used to the idea and a decent pay off as well, I really feel sorry for the guys who do not get those luxuries.
Thanks to all for the support, I would be lying if I said I wasn't bricking it to a substantial degree but I am hopeful it will work out for the best.
