Hey guys
I e-mailed Tim about what kind of pickup to put in a baritone, and he said he prefers low ouput pups so the highs dont get brittle and the lows stay clear.
Has anyone had experience a VHII in a baritone, or even a Black Dog? I looked on the forum and people tend to say Painkiller or Cold sweat in baritones...

Hi,
if Roobubba (forum member) won't reply to this thread, approach him 8) He has used a Black dog in a custom made (by another member of this forum, WezV) baritone guitar. He has praised it numerous times.
Specs of the guitar?

It's a PRS Mike Mushok baritone. Mahogany body, 27.7 scale.

So far I'm inclined to pick VHII's, but that's for me personally. Do you have some example tones you're aiming for?

I mainly just want a nice heavy tone. Not thin and brittle, but big, fat and tight, but also can be a bit aggressive. I want to be able to have some nice cleans too.

Both pickups you mentioned can do that. Wait for Roobubba to chime in or send him a private message.

FWIW, we installed a set of Nailbombs in a Mushok for a customer this past winter. It was balls to the wall heavy, but it still retained clarity and articulation (we were cranking it through a Poweball).

I think people who play baritones are detuned metal type players who will immediately get excited by the idea of a br00tal high output pickup. i've not played a baritone, but I can confirm the VH2 an Black Dog get plenty heavy enough - even a Mule will.
Roo is dead chuffed with the Black Dog in his fanned fret.

I replied to your PM, somehow missed this thread though!
Yeah the Black Dog is what you seek. It gets ultra heavy if you need it to (I wasn't even taking my 5150-II past 4/10 preamp gain with the BD), but is a great clean pickup and of course does all that PAFfy stuff perfectly. Pinch harmonics were quite tough (and I'm quite a heavy user of those - I don't miss too many).
I have since moved my MM into the baritone (I wanted to mix things up a bit), and I have to say that also slays in there, even down to E-E-A-D-F#-B tuning (although a PK or Aftermath may suit me for that slightly better).
I have to say I didn't find what Tim says about high gain pickups in Baritones - I love the MM in there!
But for your requirements, BD all the way :)
