Title: Has anyone designed their own business graphics?

I'm looking to design my own simple logo for my business and want to do it myself.  Has anyone else done this?  I'm using a Mac but I understand that there are packages out there that work on more than one operating system.

Any tips anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of business is it and what kind of culture is it? I'd get a pen and paper out first and get some ideas down, something that matches the company's ethos but easy to remember, gets the company name across and looks decent on a black and white photocopy.
