Title: Northern BKP meetup 16th of October
Post by: shobet on August 25, 2010, 11:22:57 AM
I'm starting a new topic for this as the other one is getting a bit large. I'll put the members that have indicated they're interested below and I'll populate the list of guitars and amps that will be there when I'm told what people are bringing.

Date
Saturday October the 16th.

Location
Trackside Studios Ltd (http://www.tracksidestudiosltd.co.uk/)
Brookside Mill
Macclesfield

I dunno what guitars I'll bring, I'll either decide nearer the time or let people decide (if there's any particular guitar or pickup they want to try out etc) and will bring the Splawn head and borrow a cab if that's ok?

Just a reminder that Martin and I are gigging near the meet that night with Doppelganger if anyone wants to stop over locally, have a beer or three, and check out some stuff in action?

Yep, it's mostly Tom and a bit of me.

The Cub's even better now as I've added a gain boost. Ask Shobet, he liked it.  :)

I'm really looking forward to giving it a go - I've got some debt to clear down and may need to move a few things on  :(. Might be a convincer if it's a great little amp - I'm only a bedroom guitarist at the moment with no future plans to get out gigging again.

Title: Re: Northern BKP meetup 16th of October

If Wez is up for it I'll be bringing him.
Title: Re: Northern BKP meetup 16th of October
Post by: Brow on September 06, 2010, 12:50:47 PM
I'm now 99% sure I can make it, so here's what I'll bring:

Splawn Quick Rod head - if someone wouldn't mind this going through their cab it'd be handy. I may also bring my G-Major in it's rack for this, if I have everything programmed up intime anyway!

Patrick Eggle Climaxe (Berlin Prototype) - New wind Holy Divers

If anyone has anything they want me to bring, shout up and if I can fit it in the car, then I'll bring it  :D

You can use my cab mate, no bother  :)

Also helps if we use my 2x12 for everything as it a) helps us compare the different amps and b) make sure only one person is playing at a time!!!

PRS 305, PRS,SC245 and PRS Sunburst 22 if anyone wants a go?
Rory Gallagher HAWK booster is also well worth a go - its killer!

What time to people prefer, morning, mid-day(ish), afternoons. I figure we're going to be there most of the day so I'm going to take the opportunity of getting there mid-morning and giving my gear a good workout. It's been a while since I've had stuff on 10!

Could bring my TSL if anyone is interested and the old LP Standard. Having said that sounds like some nice gear going to be there so maybe I should just leave the Marshall at home.

Shobet - you''ll need to update my gear list as I've now sold my Orion.

I'll bring my:

XTC Classic and 2x12 with Golds
Richardson SCR
Richardson SGR
Fano JM6

We didn't seem to have any P90s, hence bringing the Fano.

You could also update mine slightly. The Baja now has Blackguard Flat 50s.

I've updated the first post with the new details. Just a reminder there's a link to google maps for detailing the location of the studio. I've also put a second link to google maps with directions from the train station to the place. It's a bit of a long way around as google seems to ignore some of the more direct routes but print the map out figure it out, it's not hard.

I'll repeat there's plenty of off road parking at the place.

Yep

Thanks!

I'll hopefully have the new machineheads on the PRS by then, so if I have I'll bring that too as I don't think the Abraxas are that popular?

I was trying to bring hot rodded 80s strat with Floyd and VHIIs but it won't be finished intime :(

I'm looking forward to hearing my QR through a decent cab with some better speakers than what I have

Write me in for +2 and I'll definitely bring the Legra Aurora and MDV602

May as well let them out from my defcon level one million guard for a breather among fellow good-guitar-respecting guitarists!

I'll bring the roadstar as well. Not sure about amps, as I'd feel compelled to bring the Ubercab as well and theres the space in the car with 3 big ugly metal bar-stewards to consider.

The SG is really strange to use, it requires a very careful and unnatural playing style to get the most out of it.  It does sound good though.

Gameboy effect is just insane, it has no use whatsoever, but is fun.

I still think it'd be great installed in an old knackered wah pedal operating the 'shine' knob. *rubs chin.... searches ebay*.

But it's not as insane or uncontrollable as the Elunium. That thing really is completely bonkers.

It's strings are buggered and (I'm ashamed to admit it) but I can't work it's style of locking machine heads out so I can't change the strings on it until I replace them

Great to see you all today - cheers folks!

Things about guitar gear that I've learnt today:

* My 2x12 cab sounds great with different amps
* I like Splawn Quick Rods.  Lots.
* 8 string guitars have FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT necks
* Juansolo builds some mighty fine gee-tar effects  8)
* But don't let him and shobet breed their pedals.  Chaos ensures!

Other notes:

* La Grange is officially the most played song.  Ever.
* Lots of men in a hot room sweat buckets
* I know nothing about modern metal music..........

Thanks again guys, here's to the next one!

I'm rubbish with names but 'think' I can remember who you all are by user name on here!

The 8 string taught me my limits in the ever increasing number of strings

6 = PLENTY for me to be getting on with
7 = No extra trouble, but its not for me, thanks, 6 is trouble enough
8 = WTF?

Each to their own though, of course.

Title: Re: Northern BKP meetup 16th of October
Post by: MDV on October 17, 2010, 09:21:29 PM
haha. what did you learn?

Dont get too excited!

I just had a short chat with martin about them. He contends that they're a fundamentally unreliable form of connection that $%&# with amp layout/signal routing and as a consequence performance pretty much universally, regardless of whether they're used intelligently or not.

Whether thats automatically a totally bad thing or not is open to debate/subjectivity (see the stuff written under yoda to the left). I still maintain that they cant be all bad and may be appropriate, purely on the logic that many amps that use them sound great. Knowing that there is ribbon cable inside my powerball, for example, isnt going to make me like the sound any less, nor will it remove, say, the 5150 from being used so successfully on so many recordings, but theres a good case to be made. Ask martin if you want more details. Suffice to say, I'm all up for learning stuff that goes against whatever I currently think, martin gave me quite a bit on this matter to think about and I've come to think at least a little differently about the use of ribbon cable.

Talking about having more than one thing going at once, The MuRF has given me all sorts of ideas to build an uber noise machine. Drop in a bit of elunium (general pointless noise machine) into a Ooohwah (seems like a fairly pointless sequencer) into an echobase (which is capable of pointlessness when pushed to it's extremes). All of which can do some wonderful things on their own... It could be epic...
