Title: Dæmoness custom #2 in progress (pics)
Post by: Nolly on August 31, 2010, 12:30:19 AM
Hey guys,

I put down a deposit on a 2nd guitar from Dylan right around the same time as ordering my 7-string.
Anyway, this guitar is going to bear some similarities to make them look coherent as a duo, but it's also going to have a very different aesthetic.

Here's the spec:

-Dæmoness Cimmerian 6-string body. "Contemporary" top carve
-Swamp Ash body, 3-pc birdseye/flamed maple neck w/birdseye board
-5A flamed maple top, matching headstock overlay
-BRIGHT PINK stain (!!) on the top, natural satin back
-decorative 12-th fret inlay design (secret for now)
-Black bound neck and h'stock
-Schaller Hannes bridge, Sperzel locking tuners
-Pickups to be decided

Here is the first batch of pics, as you can see, the build has already progressed quite far.

Did your luthier just flip us the bird?

I want to know what the bullshitee and high quality bullshitee is.

And, nice looking woods.

Awesome! Even the pink will be cool for a kinda "joke" thing, but I can't like HSS and even less HS :(

But it will look great! Lovely woods! :D

Dr. Stein, the carve will be basically the same as on my 7:

looks great.i think if i had 3 wishes the second would be to be a great player, followed by a great luthier, i'm
constantly amazed by the quality of the luthier made guitars i see here. by the way, freshly cut ash turns pink on contact
with the air, so maybe nature really wanted pink wood!

I just got back from Dylan's workshop.. it's time to reveal the inlay!

For those not familiar with it (and I wouldn't expect you to be!), it's the eye from the Red Seas Fire artwork.

The rest of the guitar is coming along great too, here are some snaps of the progress on the carve:

Awesome ain't it!
The black and gold are actually black poster paint and brass powder respectively, mixed with epoxy resin. They are inlaid too, not just painted on.

I've really cut down on my guitars/guitar gear over the last year or so. Pretty much everything I've bought since has been funded by that  :)

Went over to visit the Dyl-meister this afternoon, mainly to check the neck profile before the neck is glued in. Suffice to say it feels pretty $%&#ing amazing. Knowing my preference, Dylan took his standard profile and thinned it out just a tad, leaving it at around 18.5mm at the nut. It doesn't feel as insubstantial as that measurement may make it sound though, it's still got lovely smooth shoulders with just the right amount of flatness to the back.

A brush-on finish?  That's unusual, what is it?

I have to ask. Is it the angle of the photos or does this cat have a top flight mullet?

Ah, that's an epoxy coat. On the neck that is the final layer, which is sanded back to a very pleasingly slippery satin feel (which is the state of the front of the guitar at the moment). On this build the back of the guitar is going to have the same satin finish, but the front will have the pink stain applied on top of the epoxy basecoat, then a final gloss layer will be put on top of that.

I have to ask. Is it the angle of the photos or does this cat have a top flight mullet?

Haha, yes, Dylan proudly sports a prime mullet.

The neck binding with the massive markers reminds me of an Everton mint.

Anyone else think the natural top on the body looks great with the maple fretboard?

Adam I don't know if it's the photos but that neck profile is the thinnest I think I've ever seen!

Hah, I know what you mean about the natural top, but I'm also dedicated to the cause of supreme pinkness for this guitar  :D

I think the size of the side markers dwarfs the depth of the neck somewhat, making it look thinner than it is. 18.5mm is thin,  but not quite in the league of the Ibby wizard necks (the super wizard is 17mm).

It doesn't get much pinker than this :eek: :flame:

Additionally, the eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed something going on the higher frets, behold:

Philly, it's going to have the same layout as on my 7 - very close to the old Ibanez Petrucci model.

Good grief. I think that's utterly hideous!

So long as you like it though. I've still never played any kind of scalloped guitar, even with 5 odd years working in guitar shops, I remain curious.

Philly, it's going to have the same layout as on my 7 - very close to the old Ibanez Petrucci model.

So just vol, tone and a switch (with the auto coil-split in the middle?)

I've been thinking of putting together something with an HS layout and maybe just a volume control and switch (Philly Q in superstrat shocker!).  Probably never happen of course...

I like the partial scallop idea.  I had a Yamaha bass like that (Billy Sheehan style) and it really did give much better "grip" on the strings around the top few frets.  Don't think I'd fancy a fully scalloped neck though.

I've been skipping this thread so far cos I thought the guitar itself wouldn't turn me on...

Just read through it, and I was kinda right, in as much as it's not really what I look for in a geetar myself... but... it's a stunning piece of work. Glad I came in :D

... even the pink finish

Nice one.

Awesome, if at least some people didn't think it was disgusting it wouldn't have fulfilled its mission!

So just vol, tone and a switch (with the auto coil-split in the middle?)

I've been thinking of putting together something with an HS layout and maybe just a volume control and switch (Philly Q in superstrat shocker!).  Probably never happen of course...

Wicked, yeah that layout but not with the EP1111 switch. I figured that with a more single-sized neck pickup that's not going to be very necessary (plus they're ludicrously expensive and only come in chrome!)
The partial scallops should be amazing! I actually got the idea from playing one of Tim's Les Pauls last Friday, which has scallops from 15 or thereabouts.
