Title: I need some help with an order!
Post by: ManInTheBox on August 31, 2010, 10:39:59 AM
Hello guys! I just ordered a FENDER SPALTED CUSTOM TELECASTER! http://www.thomann.de/se/fender_spalted_custom_telecaster.htm

I was thinking of putting in a BKP Painkiller in the bridge and a Cold Sweat in the neck. But I have NO IDEA what to order.

I have to choose spacing, 50mm or 53mm ? Conductor (no idea what that even is) and leg, coil and cover. I am terribly lost here. I have next to experience or knowledge when it comes to guitar hardware. I basiclly know which pickups I want, but not the specifics or how to order so the pickups will fit my Fender Tele guitar.

Please help me out dear BKP guitarists!

Also, atm I mostly play so called "djent" music. You guys think this is a good choice of pickups for this guitar? My friend just called me and told me 2 x Cold Sweat would be better but what do I know. I've never played BKP pickups, only heard from bands I love. And I haven't got the guitar yet, will be a couple of days.

I would go for 53 mm bridge spacing (50 at the neck is normal) and to be safe if you have not seen the pickup cavities go short legs, if you intend to split go for four conductor hook up, it's a good idea to have 4 if you were to change your mind at any time, you would then have that option.

Painkiller has a strong attack - ideal for djent.

Agreed.  I see the guitar has a push-pull coil-split switch, so if you want to keep the same wiring 4-conductor is definitely the way to go (personally I'd always go 4-conductor anyway).

Agreed on short legs too.  Actual string spacing at the bridge on that guitar is probably 52 or 52.5mm, so you could probably go for either 50mm or 53mm spacing.

As for covers, it depends what look you want.  The black uncovered pickups look fine, but with the spalted top I think (unusually for me) that camo covers might actually suit the guitar.  :)

What about coils? Potted or Unpotted? I've heard that Potted will suit the metal sound more, but again, what do I know? :D

I am kind of confussed whether to get 2 x Cold Sweat calibrated set or 1 x Cold Sweat for the neck or bridge and a Painkiller for either neck or bridge. What pickups would be the sweetest? And in what positions? (neck/bridge)

Thanks in advance!

You definitely want potted pickups for high-gain rock/metal music (I can't comment on djent, I am about 20 years too old for that  :P ).

I don't want to get too much into the pickup-choice advice because I don't know the musical style, but I can say the Cold Sweat set has a very nice contrast between neck and bridge pickups - the bridge is tight and bright (but with a good amount of bass), the neck is sweet and singing, a lovely sounding pickup.

I've never tried the Painkillers, but I know the PK neck pickup is ceramic so it probably doesn't sound particularly sweet.
