Title: Black Dogs in an SG Standard?
Post by: stephen78 on August 31, 2010, 07:06:06 PM
Has anyone tried this? I know a lot of people recommend the Riff Raff's for SG's, but I'm looking for something with a tad more output...that can do early Sabbath, AC/DC, and other classic rock, but can also handle some hard rock/metal if I throw some gain in. Any opinions? Thanks!

riff raff did not lack anything on my ex sg 61. Adding the sg standard is more fat woodwise and tonally, I think the riff raff will get you a good mix of cut and crunchy powerful sounds.  :)

ask Tim about the Riff Raff with 4mm thick alnico 5 magnet
it sounds huge in my PRS
the thicker magnet adds a nice amount of output and low end
mine is slightly overwound as well (8.47k)

I still owe you guys some clips  :(

Yes, works great for those sounds. I don't find it too dark, but I should point out that my SG has a fairly tight low end.

Very cool...any sound clips by chance?

I just talked to Tim and he recommended the Riff Raffs, and his personal opinion is that the Black Dogs may be dark in an SG. I guess it depends on the SG....mine is very warm sounding acoustically. Hopefully the Riff Raffs can cover all my musical tastes....from classic rock to metal.

Mine is a bit brighter than most SGs so I'd say go with Tim's recommendation. The RiffRaff would've been my second choice anyway when I picked mine.
