Just watching an interactive loop of them at Reading.
stumbled in half way through November Rain.
so far... terrible.
-
After showing up the thick end of an hour late in Dublin there, they left the stage when someone chucked bottles at the stage. There's no excuse for chucking stuff, I know, but I can't help think turning up on time and not showing the kind of contempt for the audience Axl continually shows would go a long way to preventing same.
-
yeah i was just reading about them doing the same in Reading.
Some stupid stunt they probably think makes the show better. I dunno.
-
They've been doing this to the fans for years. Yet people still go and see them and give them their money.
-
yeah. i read some comment saying 'blah blah blah... if they keep doing this nobody will put on GNR'... but they will, and people will pay a lot of money.
-
Yes, they will, but I wonder why?
GNR went cr@p around 1991 with those two double albums (awful, awful records - enough material to make one great rock record dragged out over 4 sides of utter drivel - talk about spreading yourself thin...).
When they were young & hungry (i.e. before Sweet Child o'Mine made them massive) they were a great rock band, but after that, just bloated, pompous & stuck up their own arses. The good days are never coming back, I can't see why so few people are able to accept that...
-
You guys keep bashing about "them", but it would be more apropriate to speak about "him".
-

true.
when i see 'GNR' i think fat Axl + whoever
when i see Guns N Roses... I think the legit band.
-
Lol Hunter I was just about to say the same.
Slash: Puts on a show, on time, every time. He is humble and loves playing to the smaller crowds, he's in it for the love of it.
Duff: pretty much the same as Slash.
Compare them to Axl.... well, we can all tell who SHOULD be wearing the GnR name still, and it's not that idiot. I would prefer to go see Slash or Duff any day. Axl can kiss my pimpled behind.
-
i saw them at the gig in Leeds fest 2002 - made us wait for bloody ages but either way the show was brilliant, whoever was playing the instruments. I think sometimes people (usually non musicians) overlook the ability all those guys have.
-
I was at that Leeds fest. and i watched them. I think Axl had a Rob from Nine Inch Nails and a few others ive forgotten in that line up. I might be wrong though.
It's not about ability for me. It's something else. Attitude maybe?
I don't want to see another guy in a wacky hat trying to fill Slash's shoes. It just seems awkward to me. Anyone with the money could go hire a band of really good session guys that have ability. I don't think the appeal of the real GNR is ability. I noticed at Reading this year, Axl had an autocue rolling at the front of stage. maybe that is needed... i dunno. It just seems less rock and more like bad cabaret.
-

It's seemed that way since the "User your illusion" tours. Correction: it's been that way since then...
-

He's used telepromters/autocue since the Use Your Illusion tour (Ozzy uses them too)
What he really needs is an alarm clock
Seriously - being available to start your gig on time but waiting till you are over an hour late on stage to wind up the audience so the atmosphere is hostile and Axl can really feel "They're out to get me" is total BS.
Venues have curfews and audiences often have travel arrangements that need to be kept or they wont get home at all
Axl is a dick for ignoring that - people would enjoy the band just as much if he came on at the right time and played hard for the allotted time
-

& compounding that by walking off stage when the audience pelt you with bottles is even worse!
Axl seems to like provoking people but doesn't expect to be provoked back...
-
I'm not going to defend Axl's behaviour in any way, and Jonathan's absolutely right that Axl's totally responsible for creating the hostile atmosphere which he then bitches about.
But as for Slash being "the real Guns N' Roses", I can't agree. He may put on a better live show and he's probably a thoroughly good egg. But Chinese Democracy is brilliant (IMO), whereas everything Slash has recorded post GNR is just second-rate pub rock (IMO). There's no doubt in my mind where the real talent lies.
-

Have you not got the latest solo album Philly? It's a cracker!

I haven't Dave, but I'm fairly certain that, given the piecemeal "rotating vocalist" approach, I won't like it. Such things generally don't work....
But I shouldn't judge without hearing it - I'll see if I can find somewhere I can listen to it for free. :)
-
You should - there are some great tracks on it :)

+1 (I haven't heard enough of slash's output since gnr to comment on it)
-
Imust disagree with you on this one, Philly.
Maybe Axl wrote most or everything for GNR, but I don't think he came up with all the guitar riffs. Slash really deserves credit for some A+ riffs.
According to post GNR Slash material I'm not that enlightened, but "Fall to Pieces" from the first Velvet Revolver album is just classic GNR to me and shows that Slash still has some of ye old GNR rolling in the blood!
-
i find the first Velvet Revolver album pretty interesting. But some of it reminds me of later Life Of Agony stuff, and a bunch of other bands. I like it still. I didn't like the second record anywhere near as much.

Oh yeah, I agree, I'm not claiming Axl should get all the credit for Appetite... and the other early GNR stuff.
But in terms of what they've done since, a band/artist is ultimately only as good as their songs. And Slash's songs just don't do anything for me, most of the time.
It's a bit like the Joe Perry Project vs. Aerosmith - sounds OK while you're listening to it, but nothing stays in your head afterwards.

Just read this very interesting first person review on the mygnr board...
http://www.mygnrforum.com/
Just signed up there as I couldn't believe what I was reading.
People blaming the Irish fans?
Irish fans and Dublin audiences are some of the best in the world, we give 110% at every gig.
Check out the last two shows at Dublin's O2 on YouTube.
RATM, Pearl Jam, Kiss, Green Day etc, view any of the footage and you'll see that we don't treat bands like that ever.
When was the last time you heard of an Irish crowd throwing things at a band?
You would be hard pushed to find a more generous and responsive crowd than you would in Ireland.
Axl is an asshole plain and simple.
It's always somebody else's fault with the guy.
At Reading it was the event management and police, always something or someone else, never him.
I was at that gig, I adore everything GnR, since I was a kid, I'm 37 now.
I seen Slash here a few months back at Vicar St, Duff / Loaded atThe Academy and Velvet the year before at The Ambassador, all sheer class and all total fcuking professionals.
Slash indeed, showed up TOO early and joined us in the bar, he then preformed for two hours, giving a performance like he was a teenager again preforming in front of record company execs.
He could have been excused for going back to his hotel room then, but he didn't, he spent the next 90 minutes signing autographs.
Danko finished at 9pm sharp, now we all know Axl's form, so nobody was really expecting the guy to turn up at 9.15pm (the time ALL main acts appear at the O2, without exception) and so the atmosphere was great, as always.
However, the O2 has a STRICT 11pm curfew, always has (even when it used to be The Point Depot).
This is not because Harry Crosbie (the owner) wants it that way, he could not give a fcuk if bands played until 5am, but its has to be 11pm for transportation reasons.
Lots of multi stories lock up at midnight and your car is then in lock down till 8am if you don't collect it, last trains and buses are at 11.30pm.
If you live in Dublin like myself, no big deal - but if you are after driving for four hours to see the concert, your basically on the streets for the night.
So, long story short - the curfew is there for a reason, we all know about it in Ireland and EVERY band is made aware of that also.
Pearl Jam were victims of it a few months back, here is a video of where the house lights went on at the end of Alive to signal the show was over and they were not to preform any more songs.
They did however preform one more and it was done with the house lights on, Eddie then staged somewhat of a mock sit-in, sparked up a cig and opened a bottle of wine, here is some footage of thatt:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=2dgmkRZNUUM
Okay, so now picture the scene, it's 10pm and everyone has been standing there for one hour waiting for Axl, Dublin's a small place and everyone was getting texts saying the guy hadn't left the Four Seasons.
People starting booing the stage at that point.
So when he (I say he, as I don't think the other band members would do this cr@p to their fans) didn't show up for yet another half hour, the crowd were understandably irate.
90 minutes is a fair old time to be standing there after the support, especially with the curfew in place.
Everyone was thinking, 'there is only a half hour left, wtf is going on?'
So, on they storm to boos, Axl c--ky as fcuk as if we shouldn't care he is so late, that was disrespectful to 14,000 fans who just paid $100 to see you.
He could have said:
"Hello Dublin, sorry we're late, looks like we'll be here till after midnight"
That would have settled the crowd, but he never addressed them once.
It's was highly disrespectful.
Let me clear up a few things at this point.
No GLASS bottles were thrown at him or the stage.
The O2 does not sell or allow glass on the premises.
They sell plastic pints and very soft plastic containers that look like bottles, they are not.
One of the plastic pints was flung threw the air, here is the pic:
Posted Image
He gave a warning at that point, but he looked pissed off from the moment he appeared on stage.
I would say without question that there was rows before that gig about the curfew and why they were late.
Anyway, a plastic bottle landed near him then, and off he went.
Houselights came on and almost half the crowd left as it was 11.10pm.
When he came back on at 11.36 (the rest of the time reports are bulls**t, they played till 12.52, Axl stood at the back beside the drumkit and did not move other than to walk off a dozen or so times when he wasn't singing.
He did not interact with the crowd that had stayed and sang and danced to every song.
He acted like a spoiled brat, just look at the end of PC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyZLIQ-WO1A
Look, people can make excuses for him, but there comes a time when you have to admit that the guy is an attention seeking prima donna, who has no respect for his fans.
He does not deserve the talent he undoubtedly has.
Please don't blame the Dublin crowd guys, maybe they were the first to show this guy that he needs to start having some fcuking respect for the people that have made him a multi millionaire.
Money doesn't come easy to people these days and $100 is a good chunk of cash for people and he should show some a little appreciation to people that spend their hard earned on him and just try and show up to gigs somewhat closer to the time that he is contracted to.
I'm done with the guy now, I wouldn't give him a cent of my money again.
The band were amazing by the way and the crowd adored them for it.
While Axl was at the back of the stage, the crowd were cheered and applauded for everything they did, in fact the band regularly applauded the reactions from the crowd.
They leaned out over the crowd many times also and not once did they get anything throw at them, why would they.
You could see Axl watching all this from behind and he did not look pleased, it was obvious that people blamed him and not them.
People knew who was to blame there that night.
Anyway, to finish up on a lighter note, here is how you handle plastic bottles been thrown at you

Izzy and Axl wrote everything out with Slash's solos, I believe? I though that was pretty established rock trivia.
-

yeah, fall to pieces is really good, but that's about the only VR song (which I've heard... I've only really heard the singles) I like. As opposed to chinese democracy where I pretty much like all of it.
-

Ra, if it weren't you, I would send a Hadoken to you
listen to the 2nd CD from Slash Snakepit, it's awesome!!!
And, as Dave said, the new solo album is sick! 80% of the tracks are really good, the bad ones IMO are the ones with: Fergie, Adan Kevinem, Lemmy (in deed it's good, but sounds as Motörhead does to me) and Nicole Scherzinger (nice body but bad voice, as Beyoncč and many more)
-
I did have a listen to the new Slash album on Spotify.
It's very patchy, with all the different styles some tracks work and some definitely don't! But I must admit there's some very good stuff on there - and some great vocals, especially from Myles Kennedy (who is so awesome he even puts Chris Cornell in the shade) and Beth Hart (I'd never heard of her before, apparently her track is only on the iTunes version). I had to skip the Adam Levine track, it was horrible, but I quite liked the Fergie tracks!

I've got the first one, which is rubbish! I'll try to find the second one.
-
By Adam Kevinem, you please understand Adam Levine  I was to sleepy to even see I digited it wrongly...
One of the best surprises on this CD is the one with Rocco de Lucca (whom I've never heard before) called Saint is a Sinner too, it's quite acoustic and I'm loving it!
-

He was the annoying little twerp on Rockstar Supernova. I'm not a violent man at all but really wanted to punch him on the nose. The south african woman was just as annoying as well (can't remember her name).
MAJOR EDIT - He wasn't on Rockstar, I was thinking of Lukas Rossi. Now he WAS annoying.

Oh god, the hobbit. What a tw@t.
They only picked him because they thought he was hipper than Dilana, who would've suited their pedestrian little band much better.
That was such a cr@p show. The house band was a million times better than Supernova.
-
Indeed Philly, indeed. The only part of the show I really enjoyed was listening to and watching the house band. Sooo good. It spoilt it when they let the 'stars' play with them - particularly Dave Navarro.
-
Never heard of Supernova, but I want to punch this guy on the face by just seeying this pic of him
Here is the song I said:

Gotta say, I don't like that one either. But it's better than Adam Levine. Sorry Fernando.
I'm not keen on the ballads, except the one with Beth Hart:

This is a good song Philly, just a little too "traditional", I guess... Remember something that I've heard before, perhaps Alanis Morissete...
I don't think she is very scary, I would "face" her :P
-
just to jump on the Slash love in..Myles Kennedy is a god on this with Slash!

yeah I saw em in Leeds 2002, hated the wait but great performance - lost all respect for the guy now though, he shows so much contempt for his fans then acts like everyone else is to blame.
as far as ability goes, the musicians he has purchased are definately technically excellent, but as a package they gel like a vegas show band rather than a rock band - there is little soul in the music, its too clinical for me and aint rock n roll.

No half as scary as Slash's Marshall MG tone.

Nope! I'm really not familiar with much new (or even new-ish) music. I accidentally discover a few bands/artists and get into them, but 95% just passes me by.

I think that last Beth Hart song is from the late 90s (1999 maybe) so not new in my book but maybe new-ish... Nowdays I have really lost track with all the new bands popping up. It's impossible to keep track!

It's from 1999 and is on Screamin's for my Supper

Oooo .....amazing ....... I do love Beth Hart's voice.
