I'm looking to replace my Gibson 57 Classics. I want something that'll be nice and clean when rolled back on the volume and something that really can scream, too without being a real "heavy metal" type pickup. I listen to a lot of Circa Survive and 90s rock stuff. I want it to be able to nail that stuff. I heard a lot of the sound samples, but can't decide.

i have a black dog in my [shitety] epiphone les paul. its a great pickup. its a slightly modern sounding vintage pickup thats a little darker and a littler hotter than, say, a paf. i wouldnt hesitate to recommend that. also, i think the emerald would probably be badass. thats what im going to put in my les paul custom that i get (knock on wood)

I would take a look at the vintage hot-category, like VHII's, Emerald, Abraxxas, if you want to clean up the sound with the guitarvolumeknob. I use a Crawler in my HSS-strat, but this pickup works fantastic in Les Pauls too, I read. Crawler has more output then the other vintagehots.

I would recommend the Vintage Hot ones as well, they really can bridge the gap between both worlds.
The Black Dog IMO has quite some "oomph" to it. Take it if you are more on the rock side and want the pickup to not mush out with gain, but it's middy character make it less suited for chimey cleans.
The VHII is also quite popular and I've always liked its clips a lot.
