Title: Anti-GAS - Guitars That Make You Go Ooooh!
Post by: MrBump on September 16, 2010, 10:18:29 AM
I'm trying to get excited about new guitars, but I can't.

Flicking through Thomann.de, trying to get inspired, but can't seem to muster any enthusiasm for the same old same old I keep seeing.

What's exciting people at the moment, guitar-wise?

A couple of PRSes, a few things which are too expensive to buy (Fano, Fender Custom Shop) and a few things which are much too expensive to buy (Collings, Martyn Booth).

Oh, I like the look of the Yamaha SG1800 series too, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the cost a grand more than an SG2000.  And they're still too heavy.

Nothing really "new" in a true sense though - just variations on the old favourites!

A Trussart is the only thing I'd quite fancy.

as i said elsewhere, the parker p36 tele-like guitar does something for me, although strangely the US southern nitefly version leaves me cold.  i must like the maple board better.

i've also found myself looking at lots of old Gibson Melody Makers, while having (blaspemy alert) Lollar's melody maker p90 open in another tab :)

other than that, i agree, the 20,000th re-issue of a tribute of a guitar once tripped over by a minor pop star in a hairdresser's is getting pretty boring.

The only thing thats really had me interested recently is a Padouk Washburn N4. Not usually my kind of thing at all, but they have me a little intrigued.

Gibson take note.

Strats and teles for me as well at the moment.

This tele looks quite interesting

I'm always a sucker for LPs and a P90 equipped SG wouldn't be bad either.

My GAS goes along the lines of "what Ive got now, only more expensive versions of what Ive got"

Seeing as I cant justify spending more money on guitars, I'm very happy with what I have got.

Maybe if I found a Baja tele for a good price.

Or an old National at a garage sale!?

Right now I'm happy with my guitar collection at the moment.

If pushed a travel guitar would be nice, though my little parlour reso suits that for most trips.

I guess I'm GAS-free!!

Haven't got the funds right now and if I had I think I would pick a classic tele instead. But it seems like an interesting and not so ordinary guitar.

Nothing new that makes me go "ooooh!".

Only a Dynasonic equipped Gretsch 6120 and that's been around since the mid fifties without major changes.

Trussarts for me. I did think about PRS for a while but I'm not too sure to be honest. Tried a 513 out last night and was unimpressed, I felt much more at home on a strat that cost about a third as much.

If money was no object

Gretsch White Falcon
Suhr Standard in either Chili pepper red flame or a Blueburst quilt
PRS Modern Eagle ala Daves!
Tyler S type in Carribean busrt
Fender C.S '52 Tele
Fender C.S Relic Strat - I'd have to find something that appeals and compares to my G&L
Gibson ES 339
Trussart
Gibson "V" in white
Gibson 3 pick up SG Custom in white

cr@p... I didn't think I had a problem!!!!!!

A nice Eastman ( single neck pickup type )  Archtop  would get my vote;  perhaps a nice 803, 805 or 905 , with a B.K.P Manhattan / rewind in the neck e.t.c

However

I can safely say that ( believe it or not folks )  my upgraded 'Vintage'  VS575 + Bkp Manhattans has long continued to keep me very happy.   I do have in reserve , my Ibanez AF75 with B.K.P. AII Stormy Mondays - for a nice contrast / back up, if ever needed .   As a result, the above mentioned Eastmans would  just be 'Guitar Porn' for me - as opposed to making me actually want / need to buy anything more.   The eventual  realisation dawned , that what I really needed and now greatly enjoy, is " Time on the instrument" - not more instruments.

In fairness,  I did have my last 'gasp' of G.A.S compiling a 'dream' amp head / cab rig  this last year - and a consolidating a couple of nice compact 'carry on the bus, in a padded shoulder bag '  surrogates.

It is now my ambition to become a musician ...

Stop thinking about new guitars for a while and start buying amps and pedals instead  :D

EDIT: The Manson Matt Bellamy guitar or another guitar with a Kaoss pad. Seems like a great toy.

I am gently planning a Mk II Telemaster project so rather than a specific guitar I'm more in the mode of looking at parts online and plotting.  Klusons? Yum.  Nitro maple necks with a soft V, 9.5" radius board and biggish frets? Yum.  etc. etc.  If someone wants to give me a Trussart Tele, a Gretsch Billy-Bo and 1962 Olympic White Fender Strat I won't say no though. :)

I'm currently debating some BKPs for an existing guitar, and maybe replace it's bridge assembly...

But other than that, I have no desire for new guitars at present... seems slightly odd, that, I hadn't realised that was where I was at!

the only things I've GASed for (and still do) are:

* Ricky 360 Jetglo
* Gretch Rocjet (silver sparkle with Bigsby)
* Les Paul with a floyd (practicality for covers band)

Other than that, there are loads of fantastic guitars like the Gretsch White Falcon, but I can't imagine I'd ever get any use from something like that.

I have abated my GAS for a while, but a Fender brown era amp is high on the list of future possibles - that and a 000 or a 00 acoustic - A Brook Lyn has been strong desire for a long time.

I'm pretty much stocked for fixed bridge guitars but I do fancy one of the new San Dimas Charvels, another sabre type Ibanez to replace the one I had to sell and ......err... a banjo so I can play hillbilly chase music.

Seriously though, I do want a banjo, so if anyone can recommend me a good 5 string model that won't break the bank let me know and I'll do my research

Dunno much about good/bad banjos, but I reckon a Nailbomb would be just about right once you've got your hands on one  (No point going to a banjo duel without having your weapon loaded with appropriate hardware...)

Anyway, if we are considering "non-guitar" stuff - I am vaguely tempted by the idea of getting some recorders and learning to make some musical noises with them. I've recently heard some amateur recordings of medieval music done on a multi-tracker that make me think that my fear/loathing of the instrument is perhaps unfounded... and that, perhaps, there might be much satisfaction to be gained from this cr@ppy thing... And, by the way, the sound of a well-played recorder ensemble goes extremely well with accoustic guitar stuff... (Might sound a bit "Stairway", I guess, but it's not like they invented the idea)

Like many others, probably, my impressions concerning the recorder were formed between the tender ages of 7 and 10 at school... In fact, being forced to learn this "devil's bottom-probe" of an instrument put me off music altogether and convinced me that I was a complete numpty. It was only a music teacher selecting me for his school choir later at age 11 after a compulsory "audition" that enabled me to re-evaluate the entire subject and to suspect that I could "do music" at all.

I did recorder at school, aged 9, for a very short time... it was compulsory, but unless my memory is blanking out the horror they seemed to abandon it after only a few weeks.  Maybe because we were all so cr@p.  :?

Funnily enough, I was the best in the class at recorder!  Perhaps because, being a naturally swotty type, I was the only one who actually practised (usually one quick run-through the day before the lesson).

Since then there has been no further evidence that I can "do music", unfortunately.

man recorders are just horrible. I mean, don't get me wrong, you can play them well, but i never understood the logic in handing instruments out to schoolkids which pretty much are guaranteed to give you a migraine, unless they're played perfectly, and where all you have to do to guarantee said migraine is blow slightly too hard. "Don't overblow, children!"... guess what happened.

I mean, yeah, I realise it's because they're cheap. But much like buying too cheap a guitar will put you off more than it'll encourage you, the recorder is the same. By trying to let everyone have a go (which is an admirable aim), they're probably putting everyone off music. I'm just glad I'd done music before that or I'd have been put off too...

... I think that I might have been saved by an unlikely source...

Getting seriously aroused by the Ibanez "S" series guitars posted here recently...

Might have to take a serious look at one of them.  Not the "traditional" guitar that I thought I'd be lusting after, but who can predict these things???

- Matamp Orion - They sound like they'd do everything that I want from an amp. Just dont have the monies :(-
- Ampeg Dan Armstrong 'Plexi'
- A nice Octave Pedal
- Bixonic Expandora (or another nice 'crunchy' OD/Dist Box), My Blackstar does the silly high gain stuff just fine but it's a little too much at times.
- Les Paul Goldtop

Ok: Antigas: Danelectro's, Rickenbackers, most Eastwood-models, Epiphone Crestwood, most metalguitars, guitars you pay half the price for only the name on it (actually the whole customshop-hysteria, every brand has now a customshop, yeah, yeah), customshopguitars with so-so-pickups (you have to invest more and end up buying BKP's) and hardware (like tonepro's), expensive guitars with bad finishes, etc...

I'm 100% telecaster at the moment and am lusting after more. I was taking a little nostalgic trip earlier and looking at photos of the teles/esquires I've owned in the past (4 I think). Jane walked past and said it was very sad - I'm pretty sure her interpretation of that was different from mine.

Since putting the BG flat 50s in the Baja I've wanted to play nothing else. I'm also certain I have done something wrong with the wiring. It sounds ace though so I think I might leave it like that for a while and run the risk of ridicule at the Manchester meet.

I am truly bad at soldering/wiring.
