Title: Shopping for pickup
Post by: sandmannn69 on September 23, 2010, 10:58:22 PM
Hi,

New to forum and looking for better pickups for my Charvel.

I have two production model Charvels, a San Dimas and a So Cal, both with alder bodies, maple neck/boards, and Floyd bridges, 1 volume, no tone. The SD has Duncan JB-bridge, Jazz-neck, and the SC has Dimarzio Tone Zone-bridge, Evolution-neck. The SD with the JB is my favorite player but the TZ in the So Cal is too dark, muddy for my tastes, so looking for an alternative for that one, and don't need another alder/floyd guitar with a JB.

The guitar tech that does my setups, Billy from B&D Guitar repair in Phoenix, AZ highly recommends BKPs. He recommended the Nailbomb to replace my JB, as he doesn't care for the modern JB, and the original is hard to find. Since I'm not really looking for a replacement for the JB right now, I was looking for replacement suggestions for the TZ, going for a Zakk Wylde-No Rest For the Wicked/John Sykes-whitesnake1987 sound, if that's possible with an alder-floyd guitar.....I can get close with my Edwards LP w/duncan distortions but prefer the neck profile on my Charvels.

I use a Fractal audio AxeFx standard, so amplification is irrelevant. With the names Miracle Man and Cold Sweat, I suppose those pups would be the obvious choices, except wouldn't be going in an LP custom with ebony board.

for a les paul, my recommendation would definitely be the cold sweat
but for thin alder body, a nailbomb will probably get closer to that sound
it's a lot like a cold sweat, but fatter and less bright, with a bit less mid crunch, but very aggressive too

Thanks for you input, Eric. Guess I will stick with something from SD, as doesn't seem to be much interest in
replacement pickups for alder-most of the clips for the BKP pups are done with LP-style guitars, and I'm pretty
satisfied with the pups in my LPs. Maybe try an alnico-8 magnet in a JB....

If i remember rightly the painkiller was developed for Alder gutiars.

Also i tried the Miracle man in my friends jackson dk2m or whatever it was and it sounded awesome, very 80s thrash sounding.

cold sweat would be good (Miracle man would also work really well)

The only Alnico ones I'd suggest would be Painkiller and maybe Holy Diver although I'd favour either of the ceramic choices
