Title: Speaker suggestions
Post by: Brow on September 29, 2010, 01:28:54 PM
Hey guys.

I'm thinking about changing the speakers in my Marshall 2x12 cab from the G12-75ts (I think) it currently has to something else.

I've had this cab since I was 15 years old, and it's always sounded great with my Marshall JCM800 2210 and my old Carlsbro 50-Top head, but find it's lacking something with my Splawn Quick Rod. The sound is perfectly ok, just a bit bland and feel I can get more from the amp with a different set of speakers.

I've had suggestions of the Splawn Small Block Speakers (a higher power variant of a Greenback) but they're not easilly available without having them sent to someone in the USA and then having them re-sent on to me etc. I've also been recommended the Scumback M75s, but at about £400 plus import tax to have them imported from the USA, I can't really justify the cost tbh.

Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations of things I can look into that would give me atleast 100w power handling in a 2x12 cab? I play mainly 70s and 80s Rock, so nothing too out of the ordinary :)

I know speakers are a very personal thing, but atleast it's a good starting point for me to start researching :)

Thanks

Craig

look for a pair of celestion sidewinders.  They'll do you proud.  For current production speakers, listen to Eminence Wizard or Tonespotter.

I really Like the Eminence Man O War. Its 120w and the bass isnt as HUGE as they describe. It's kinda like a T75 crossed with a V30

Vintage 30s may work if you like G12T-75s?

i think T-75's and V30's are quite different. complimentary though.

Scumbacks are what people normally suggest to go with splawn I think. maybe along with Hellatones.
You could try some Tayden Brits.
2x Jensen Blackbirds....

buying speakers is the worst. such a hard thing to do. I wish someone just had a speaker shop exclusively where you could try all kinds of speakers in a variety of cabs or something.

I was lucky enough to have a friend who hoards everything he buys so got to try 5 or 6 different ones before deciding but i agree completely

+1 on the Sidewinders
I have them in all my cabs...

Thanks for the suggestions so far :)

Vintage 30s may work if you like G12T-75s?

I've always liked the cab with the JCM800, Carlsbro and Orange amps I've owned but the Splawn seems a bit more picky with speakers it seems to like.

I tried the QR in Sounds Great with a Diamond Amps 4x12 that I think had V30s in it and I really liked it. But I don't know how much of that is down to the bigger cab Vs the different speakers.

Any suggestions where I could find any Sidewinder speakers?

A V30 and G12h30 make a great combo!

A V30 and G12h30 make a great combo!

But it's only 60 Watts.

I like the G12K-100 for high power applications, and the G12T-100 is like a higher rated Greenback.

Is there a higher wattage Tayden G12H alike?

I've just checked the Diamond Amps website and the 4x12 cab I tried my QR with originally either had 4x V30s or 2x V30s and 2x G12H Anniversary Speakers.

If I had the money (and the space) I'd get 1 of those cabs as it really seemed to fit the QR well. IMO atleast as alot of Splawn users don't like V30s very much

I've also had a look into Zilla Cabs as mentioned in another thread on here, and really like the look of their oversized 2x12 cabs

Tayden can make a G12H with a Kapton voice coil which will increase the power handling to around 60W.

A V-30 (depending on who you talk to) can handle 60 Watts or 75 Watts. They are definitely NOT 30 watt speakers-- 30 refers to the size (30cm).

You're missing the point mate  ;)

A V30 and a G12H in the same cab can only handle twice the power of the lowest wattage speaker.  A G12H is rated at 30w, therefore the cab can handle 60w.......

Ok, you could be right, then maybe two V30's.

The V30 has an excellent resale value, so if you don't like it...
Personally I've been a loyal Eminence fan; I used to have the V30 16 ohm and the T75 8 & 16 Ohm, but nowadays I use Eminence mostly.
I've got the Krank Legend V12, which I hear is a bit different from the standard Eminence Legend V12. It's a great all around speaker, maybe a bit much bass.
I've used the E. Governor a lot, very aggressive and powerful, cuts through the mix great. I also have a E. Black Powder, supertight, great for superclean sounds or superheavy downtuned ones. Not much in between. And finally an E. Cannabis Rex, which is kind of similar to a Weber speaker (I was told, aka hearsay). Big round sound, very warm, very full, great for making a harsh amp sound big and warm.

Thanks for the info!

I don't really know of many people that use Eminence, so thanks for the input and other point of view! :)

The list of possible speakers to look into is now getting quite long................

That doesnt seem right to me, when the power is distributed between 2 - 4 speakers. It would, I guess, be distributed between the speakers according to their relative impedences, if theres any rule to it, and just equally if not. Practically speaking, since impedences are rarely (at least)/never (that I know of) mixed the power will be split evenly between them.

i was wondering about this.
a 4x T75 cab is rated for 300watts. even though it has 4 75watt speakers, by that rule it would only handle 150watts right?

a higher power g12h has got me gasing a bit.

Are you agreeing or not?  :)
You're right anyway in that power is distributed according to impedance, just as any other load.
Usually equally therefore, and thus limited to 2 times (or 4 times in a 4x12) the LOWEST powered speaker.

Actually, yes, that follows.

I was dissagreeing, for the record, using the same logic that should have led me to agree.

Anywho, yeah, bit distracted; last day of work ever!

Isn't a Classic Lead essentially a G12H30 with a kapton coil?  Or am I mixing things up.

Then count me in too - I use an eminence legend GB 12/8 on my HRDx, was on my Blues Junior before, and it's been a major improvement in both amps. It's a kind of a greenback-like (as the name implies), with possibly tighter lows (but I'd need to compare with a real greenback in the same cab and with the same amp to make sure), and it's really not expensive.

I had to look him up - I dont own a TV, remeber, let alon e watch it in the day.

No, I took a voluntary severance deal that they offered to everyone where I work. I'll be self employed as a guitar tech and audio engineer (before any of you whine that I'm not very good at that; its a relative thing; I'm better than most in the back of beyond I live in).

If it doesnt work, then I've got good qualifications and a good CV: photovoltaics/nuclear fusion/nanoelectromechanics here I come! (stuff I specialised in at uni mainly).

Sorry for the threadjack

Carry on....speakers, etc.

Quite possible. They look to be very similar apart from the power handling. They might use different cones though.

A Celestion rep once told me that the V30 can handle an easy 60w, but it needs 30w to make it sound the way it was intended, hence 'Vintage 30'

the Tayden Great Brit (50w) has gotta be the one to go for in a 2x12.

Thanks for the new suggestions!

I'm going to use my QR locally with a few different 2x12s and see if anything peaks my interest, Orange 2x12 with V30s as a starting point, and see how I go.

I may eventually try and sneak another 4x12 in when the girlfriends not looking
