I use a Marshall DSL401 and I think it's time to be thinking of changing the valves on it as it appears to have been getting progressively quieter over the last couple of months so I assume the power valves are giving out. At the moment it has JJ Tesla valves in but I'm not sure which valves are the best to go for as replacements. I play mostly Rock and Metal covers and I like plenty of gain that is highly articulate and smooth. If you need any other information, just let me know. Thanks for your help.

Its another offering from JJ but you should really try out there E34L
really nice valve and works incredibly well in combos
its what im using in my TSL601

The DSL401 takes EL84's.
I'd use JJ or Sovtek.

Ahh i thought it would be el34
sorry

the JJ EL84 is quite a solid tube, but if you can manage the extra, these Philips ones are NICE and will last many times longer (while sounding better) than the JJs...

Also, these Russian Military ones are great (and very cheap), used them in loads of EL84 amps and every single person had loved these (bit more headroom than most EL84s, so punchier tone)...

JJ's are very consistent.

JJ's are great tubes, very dark and smooth sounding, which is why people like them for metal. Can't go wrong.

I got a quad of those in my Budda Superdrive 30 once and it was a huge sound, really souped up the amp:

Can't use Sovteks in a DSL401 as the diameter of the envelope is too big to fit through the chassis opening to the valve socket.
I install JJs in DSL401s.

i followed an HTH recommendation and got these valves. the improvement in headroom was quite noticeable. they have slightly different, and in my view desirable characteristic.
