Title: Pig 90 in C#
Post by: _tom_ on October 24, 2010, 06:11:01 PM
Thought I'd post this as I haven't done anything with a BKP'd guitar for ages. Quite a generic metal riff but shows the Pig 90 can still be quite tight in a Les Paul downtuned to C# with 11s

edit - just listened through my grados and the mix/tone sound quite thin, but if anything it's a bit muddy through my pc speakers :?

Sounds cool! A little bit thin... love the track!

I'm not into the drop C/Cis-metal stuff, but this track sounds cool. Like the shimmering highs in the chords and the growl in the lows.

Nice clip. I quite enjoy the mixes of playing style and tone style. That's actually the idea behind one of the songs I am (desperately) trying to put together, but I haven't been playing much lately.

I think guitars were meant to be tuned in C. I tuned my epiphone LP in open C (like Soundgarden did on some of the songs on their last album: Burden in my hand and Pretty noose). I am no metal guy as far as my playing is concerned, but still, the growls you get out of a Les Paul tuned in C are just where it is at, IMO.
And P90s are so cool. I have only one in the neck of my Studio, but I have never loved a neck pick-up as much as the MQ.

Ta :) I don't really like modern scooped tones even for "teh br00talz" either, not that I play much metal any more. And yeah I know what you mean about the downtuned growl, it sounds awesome and I'm thinking about going up to 12s or 13s to get some tension back in the strings as 11s just flop all over the place.

Sounds decent as a stonery tone.

Needs bass to deal with the thinness (it will dissapear with a properly mixed bass) and, may I gently suggest more carefull attention to tuning.

But nice tones.

Just came across this as I'm looking at getting a Pig 90 if I get a PRS SE One. This sounds cool. The opening riff reminds me a bit of Black Label Society. Cool tone. Is this the Laney?

Yeah it's Laney boosted with a BYOC Overdrive. Love the Pig 90, quite sure it's my favourite BKP now.

Mark, the guitar never seems to stay in tune with 11s past Eb, I think there's not enough tension or something. So this is about as good as it gets without going up to 12s or 13s I'm afraid

It sounds more to me like intonation issues than general tuning.

What do you normally have this guitar in?

I always found with LP style guitars or even any 24.75" guitars if you go more than half a step from where they're intonated perfectly you get all kinds of horrendous intonation problems.

Other than that you've done a pretty good job on this as has already been mentioned it sounds thin in places but i also find the lows to be a tad murky have you used any high/low pass filters on it?

It's usually in Eb but was set up for standard tuning. So I guess the intonation could probably do with adjusting.

That's the built in Reaper vst. I keep meaning to get a proper trem pedal but I never get round to it.
