Hey guys,
So does anyone know whats BKP's equivalent of Seymour Duncan Custom (bridge) ?????
Painkiller??
Will it make a difference if the BKP is uncovered as opposed to covered??
-
cold sweat
not equivalent, but the closest model
the nailbomb reminds me of the custom V, but it's bigger, punchier and a bit less scooped
-
Will it make a difference if the BKP is uncovered as opposed to covered??
yes
the difference is £10 (up to £20 if you want a custom cover)

oh the cold sweat -
haha. I know the price difference  ....but i mean difference in terms of sound-wise / gain wise ??
-
that was my point

 okay, so basically no difference in tonal qualities i take.
-
indeed, the wind is altered to compensate for any tonal effects of the cover*
*This may or may not be urban myth.

This is an easy one IMO: the ceramic Nailbomb. That's definitely the closest to the Duncan SH5. Similar in output, similar low-mid grunt and bright top end. The Cold Sweat doesn't sound anything like the SH5 to my ears.

I guess that the ceramic Nailbomb gets overlooked in these discussions because it's not on the list of standard models .
-
and because it's an overwound cold sweat

None the less, it sounds considerably different than the Cold Sweat and definitely more along the lines of the Duncan Custom than any other BKP :)
-
this thread still going???
I just ordered the Aftermath (in Aged Nickel) from Nick @ The Axe Palace. BTW Cheers for the quality service Nick! :P
After emailing BKP and reading several discussions on the tone and what, this sounded like the logical one to go with. (bad pun not intended)
Ill post some pics once installed!
thanks for everyones input!

But they have different wire type as both the Cold Sweat and Nailbomb are plain enamel AWG43 and the Duncan Custom is Polysol AWG44 as I recall (is the Aftermath a Polysol as well ?)

Nah, only the Warpig and MM are Polysol AFAIK. I believe the AM is AWG43, but I may be wrong on that.

Neck is 43.
I *think* the bridge is 44, but dont quote me on it.
-
duncan forum guys say the duncan custom is enameled 43 awg, which makes sense for me, especially after hearing their alnico versions
-
Thanks for correcting me on that one
I was trying to figure out which was which
Do you happen to know what the Custom Custom, custom 5 and JB are
Are they all 43 gauge?
I thought the JB was 44 gauge as was the Duncan Distortion

all the custom models are said to have the same winding with 43 enamel, but different magnets
the distortion is supposed to be the same as the JB, which is supposedly 44 poly, buth the oversized ceramic magnet
some say the invader also has the same winding specs as the distortion, but with extra magnets and different screws
I can't confirm those specs, but that's what I usually read on duncan forums
I wonder what a nailbomb with alnico II would sound like, especially on the mids
a nailbomb with a smoother top and more upper mids would be tasty

Thanks for that
I think the Holy Diver and Painkiller are both 44 gauge but not sure if that is plain enamel or polysol- would have to check
I like understanding what makes each pickup sound the way it does, but I'm just glad they all sound how they do really.
Makes life fun!
I do need to get a pair of Aftermath pickups and try them in the Feline Pantera in place of the Painkillers - see how the tone changes
