Title: I think I need...
Post by: MrBump on October 28, 2010, 01:01:00 PM
... a vintage mahogany PRS Mira.

Can't think of a good reason not to get one, apart from not having a grand to spend...

What are my options for simple, Gibson-esq all mahogany guitars?

double cut styles?

Hamer?
I really miss my gibson double cut classis (the gold top double cut) they are under a grand second hand.
if you can find a gibson firebrand es335s that could could be cool. (very cool imo). especially if you dig the mira.
do Agile make double cuts? if so that could be a good bet.

or any ES335S if you can find one.

Gordon Smith!!

try and get a good old one if you go this route.
I've played a few and owned an old one (serial 00156)
It used to be the case that you'd get great playability and poor finishing, but I remember reading recently something about a long time stockist no longer being able to sell them on comfortably given their concerns of the craftsmanship at the level it was at not too long ago.
definitely play one if you fancy one, same as anything else really.

Yamaha SG 1000/1500/2000 and the old ones. Superb workmanship, great sounds, weighs a ton.

How much DO you have to spend?

A used Mira is around £800 and a superb purchase.  Hamers (as mentioned) can be bought cheaply, or the non-faded Gibson Specials with P90s or 'buckers are good too.

Don't have anything to spend per se - however, it's my 40th next year, and rather than wasting money on my family I could be tempted to spend a grand or so on myself...

Was rehearsing last night with my Yam SG200, and I'm falling in love again with the medium low output humbuckers in mahogany again.  Real magic to it.

And the Mira is the only PRS that I really like the look of (sorry Dave).  Really simplez and un-blingy.

Used to crave Gordon Smith action, being a Billy Bragg fan, but I've heard very mixed stories about their QC...  At the moment it's the Mira that gives me the shivers.  Peach Guitars is only 30 minutes down the road, maybe I'll take a look...

Mark.

Peach is very close to some friends of mine in Essex, but I always think it would be taking liberties to ask them to run me down there then hang about while I drool over guitars!

Be sure to check this one out!

All the best people are 40 next year

I have a Maple-top Mira and its the best guitar I own. However I do regret not buying one of the more 'plain' variants. The one Philly posted suits my tastes so much better.

How about a Martyn Booth Standard?

I love the look of the Huber Krautster. A bit pricey though but nice all the same.

You can get good deals on the Dean Hardtail Pro used (when you can find them).

Thought I'd share the Feline Lion guitar I've just built myself
It's like an all mahogany LP  but thinner bodied and lighter
In essence it's like an upmarket junior (cub) with an arched top

Soundwise I wanted it to be like an SG or a Flying V but in a LP type format

Is that an oil/satin finish, Jonathan, or is it yet to be finished?

thats tasty Mr.F, how much for such a beast - thats pretty much like the old black beauty LPs, right? (no maple cap)

I'd stain the top a dark red like the classic SG colour as a tip of the inspirational hat.

That's lovely Jonathan, but a little out of my league, I suspect.

Also - it's still a little too -- what's the word? -- spohisticated?

Mira is still in the lead, unfortunately.
