Title: NGD(nearly) - Feline Lion Special
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on October 30, 2010, 12:39:13 PM
Thought I'd share the Feline Lion guitar I've just built myself

I'm in the middle of doing the prototype for the 20th anniversary model and decided to make myself something else as well
Some of you may know my love of flying Vs, and as I recently found myself without a V of my own since selling the Korina one to an existing customer, I decided I needed something to replace it tonally.
And due to my fixations with Michael Schenker and other players who had a similar kind of tone in the early 80s I chose my preferred combination of mahogany body and neck, ebony board and a pair of Cold Sweat Pickups
What a beauty she has turned out to be both visually and sonically

It's like an all mahogany LP  but thinner bodied and lighter
In essence it's like an upmarket junior (cub) with an arched top
It's the sort of guitar that Philly Q (amongst others) have said that they would like :)

I've utilised some of the same appointments that we were introducing with our 20th anniversary Lions
One is the pearl inlaid headstock logo

Another item which was supposed to be an exclusive for the 20th anniversary was the fingerboard inlays, but I thought I'd like it for this guitar as well

Of course it has the usual Feline Lion  feature of the all access neck joint - so it's super easy to get to the highest frets

The full specs are
Mahogany body - 2 piece rear and 2 piece arched top - just like on a normal Feline Lion
3 piece mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard with deluxe inlay
24.75" scale with Dunlop 6000 frets (22)
Earvana Compensated Tuning nut
Sperzel trimlock machineheads
Tonepros bridge
tonepros locking studs with Gotoh Aluminium tailpiece
BKP Cold Sweat Pickups (4 con/long leg/vintage spacing/zebra finish)
BKP 550k ohm pots
NOS russian oil and paper caps (0.022uF on bridge and 0.015uF on the neck)
switchcraft jack in "electrosocket" retainer
Dunlop straplocks

This one is definitely for me and I'm planning on having it the same colour as the last Lion Cub I made a few years back
This is what I want the colour to be like

Should anyone want one like it - one the same spec would be £2000
Prices will start at about £1700 for one without binding and with dot (or no) inlays

Should point out that it has the full arched top on it - you'll see it more once the paint is on as the light will reflect more and show off the curves

Tasty. Amber or Tobacco Sunburst would a be an option too.

thankyou
I was planning to make some future versions of this with just an oil finish - like I did with the Feline Pantera

It's quite a popular approach to finishing with companies like Organic, Black Machine, Vanquish etc all doing something similar

I agree, lovely stuff.

Might even consider getting a custom job sometime, might come to you when I do.

Love the whole concept of Feline guitars.

Great guitar. Body reminds me of the Framus Diabolo.

Nice one :D

That's the one I saw a few weeks back before hardware, isn't it?

Philly - I reckons you might well like it. It had Philly needs to see/avoid this at all costs . It balanced beautifully on one finger poked in the switch cavity. Obviously thats not exactly how you'd play it, but I'm not convinced I could happily balance my Les Paul on one finger like that for any length of time. Even with the hardware I reckon you could probably still lift this one easily like that.

Jonathan - the "unfinished" look is quite cute, but I reckon your planned finish will give it a nice understated/functional luxurious sort of vibe about it. :D

EDIT: I think personally I'd go for an SG-like "dark cherry" stain myself, possibly even finish in oil after that (is that possible? a stain then oil? would it be possible to keep the binding without stain?) but that's just cos I'm rather fond of that colour and I like the feel of fadeds/etc

i was thinking the same thing - dark cherry finish. it could even work with a tummy cut in the back too.

great idea for a guitar by the way jonathan, nice that it has a arch top as well. it reminds a little of those heritage guitars, although they have maple tops of course.

Think I'll go with plan A on this one but will keep your colour scheme in mind if I make another - maybe it will end up in your collection  :D

I thought you'd also appreciate the concept......... BTW ........we've also just got our hands on a V90 (only on loan) and are "making plans"

 I've been thinking about it on and off all morning - Missus R doesn't know yet, though. I've even been wondering what I'd use it for and therefore what type of pickups I'd need/want in there.

I'm definitely buying into the "SG/Junior but with the luxuries of carved top and binding" concept now. It sounded like a good idea in theory anyway, but I think you could well be on to something here.

Definitely needs a finish, although it looks mighty nice already!

I think the arched top is a good idea, even on the Cub model, for that little bit of extra playing comfort.  I think an LP-type with Strat-like contouring might also be interesting.

You mean the forearm contour? Or the belly cut? Or both?

I never notice the ridge on the top of my LP when I'm playing, but I've usually got a sore arm after gigs, and the singer in my psychobilly band uses my LP and it hurts him. I really notice the ridge when I play a Rickenbacker in that same band, too.

I dunno if a LP with a forearm contour would ever look "right" though.

Both, I guess.  Belly cut for certain, forearm contour would probably look weird, you're right... but I'm thinking unbound top, because binding always adds a bit of a sharp edge anyway.

So a contoured Junior type.... singlecut PRS Mira?

We did the arm and belly contour on our Tiger Cub, so I'm sure it can be done on the Lion cub

That's a nice gesture, but at the moment I have no bucks for my daily GAS. I responded cause I admire your ideas and workmanship.
