I wanted to play along to some backing tracks today (from various total guitar cds) the only problem is my cd player doesnt wanna work! I put the cd in, it makes the usual noise that it always has when it reads cds, then clicks and sounds like its skipping or something, then stops and I either get "no CD" or the cd player turns itself off. Its a JVC UXP55 which I only got last xmas (the warranty has just ran out I think), so I wonder if anyone has any idea how to fix this?
Cheers

Sounds like the laser is not working.
Open the player and try cleaning off the lens.
-
ok, is it pretty obvious which bit the laser is? Thanks alot!

When you open it, you will see 3 things:
The drawer mechanism, the part that holds/spins the CD, and a part that moves into place to read the CD. This part has the lens.
Try loading a CD with the top open to make sure nothing is being obstructed. If everything is moving fine, then open the drawer with the top open.
With a clean Q-Tip, clean any dust from the lens - it's pretty obvious which part is the lens.
If there is other dust inside, clean it all out.
If your CD is a walkman or doesn't have a tray, then it's not worth fixing. Just chuck it in the garbage.

Gah! I cant get at the lens as theres a white plastic bit covering the drawer! I dont know how to get it off, I've unscrewed everything but it wont come off :(
-
The white plastic bit is probably intended to keep prying fingers out, lol.

haha yeah. I gave it a blast with the hoover but it still doesnt work

Weird. I have a JVC from the late 80's. They're about as tuff as a Toyota Hi Ace. I've only cleaned it once. It could play a fried egg if it had music burned on it.

They probably arent "made the way they used to be" I'm gonna find a repair centre or something coz it definately needs fixing!

I had a DVD drive that wuoldnt read DVDs but would read data and audio fine, I don't know why, I had a spare one hangig about and just changed it over, works now.
A new CD drive shouldn't cost much if it's knackered, I got a 52x CD-RW drive for £30 a couple of years ago.
