Title: what are the 550 BK pots?
Post by: metalman22105 on October 30, 2010, 10:46:15 PM
This is probably a dumb question, but what do the 550 BK pots do? (as far as sound?)

I believe they will just be a tad brighter than a standard 500k

All electronic components have a tolerance range - maybe plus or minus 10% (sometimes 20%)
If you buy a current 500k pot and get one with the -10% tolerance you only have 450kohms and it will take the edge of a humbucker's tone which in a dark guitar is unwelcome.

To avoid that Tim specified 550k ohms(10% tolerance) and the taper to CTS
That way on a "bad one" you still have 500k ohms and good tone!

Ahh, makes sense, thanks for clarifying!

Does anybody know if a 550 tone pot rolled down to about 8 would be roughly equivalent to a 500 on full ?
or have i gotten something completely wrong.
