Was doing about 78/9 mph when the Mrs pointed out there were two funny looking white boxes on tripods next to an unmarked van on the bridge....speed cameras or number plate recognition??? Didn't see any signs. There was a car and two bikers about half a mile further down the road...they didn't stop me...so I think I'm safe!!
Not spotted a camera system like this before! Kind of my fault I know...don't really want a speeding ticket for Christmas!!
-
were you on a motorway?
did the camera thingy flash?
-
If you do get anything through the post you could try the old " we cant remember which one was driving" routine. i.e. you cannot tell them which one of you should get the fine. Some say it works.
-
The fine goes to the registered owner of the vehicle. If they didn't stop you you're probably ok.
-
If they didn't pull you up I would guess it's OK, they do that near me a bit, van on the bridge - car/bike round the corner.
-
Lucky barstewards! The cops overhere use unmarked civilian cars and camouflaged cameras. Whenever I see a car parked down the road I slow down. I've had 3 tickets last year, about 30 Euros each all for less than 10 km's too fast.
F$%*ing gestapo!
Edit: radar/laser detectors and shields are illegal in my country too. Even signaling eachother with lights is illegal. :?

Hayden,
If you were on the motorway doing 78/79, you should be OK. Most static UK speed camera's are calibrated for 10% + 2mph, the mobile one's are a different kettle of fish and I'm not sure about them. The useless info you get from reading 'bike mag's... ;)
I think the little white boxes are camera's, but they're usually hidden in the back of an unmarked van, generally parked up on the Police car "mounds" on the motorway with one rear door open. Unless of course, they were doing a survey of the road, and the white box was actually a theodolite, but they're usually green-ish.

Is that true about the 10%+2?

in north wales theres zero tolerance now.. 71mph would give a ticket!
never believed the 10% + 2 stuff.. that kind of idea originally came from the results of a survey where they found (depending on the area) that police ALLOWED a certain number of mph over the limit before making a stop\issuing a ticket or warning.
let us know what happens hjm!

It's the waiting.......I think it was a number plate reading/tracking system this time but we'll wait and see!!
cheers

If there was two boxes I think one will be a laser guidance thing (works like radar, pings a signal off you and measures the time for it to bounce back) and the other will be a camera. I did around 95 past one in the summer, down the A38 in Devon but didn't hear anything of it.... presumably they were focused on someone else on the road. Lucky!

I speak from experience here. All the gatso's I've set off, which is a few now, (after a lot of years dispatch riding) I never sent anything back by mail and got away with all of them. Basically if you set off a camera, the authority's rely on the gullible british drivers to dutifully admit the crime by signing the form they sent you, if you don't send it back then it becomes a lottery and they pick out a few to chase up. The worst that could happen is you get a bit more of a fine, which is cheaper than what the insurance company's will charge you in increased premiums. After 6 months you have got away with it as they have to make a case against you within that time.

I don't think you are correct there. I did one of those speed workshops because I was doing between 34 and 36 in a 30 zone. From what the people who run it said, I'm pretty sure peope doing under 10% wouldn't be prosecuted. Those doing under 20% get the opportunity to do the speed workshop (if it is the first time), but those over 20% get the fine and points regardless.
-
A friend of mine was caught on one of those van cameras he wasn't stopped but got a fine through the post.
If there's a chance you'll loose your license, eg it was a 30 or 40 limit, then go to the hearing in court when it comes up. I was with someone doing 119 mph on a dual carridge way (70 limit). He went to court and gave them a big sob story was was let off with 9, or so, points on his license.

That's so wrong. But at least you haven't got this coming: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=12777
Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but how long before speed cameras are put in them on the sly? That'll mean if you step over the limit anywhere on any major road you'll get points.
And there's some news articles on that site from a while back that say it's not going to be long before all new cars have black boxes installed, to monitor, amongst other things, you know what....
BTW Ratrod if you like your cars Pistonheads.com is a great site. :)

There was a tv show on in the Meridian TV area tonight with views for and against the cameras.Without going into all that, the 10% = 2 mph thing was confirmed in some areas but the amazing thing, in the age of uniformity, is that it can vary depending upon the area- as in the zero tolerance for North Wales. There is a legal challange underway by a guy call Idris Francis and he is challenging the way that the registered keeper is sent a letter asking that he/she admit their guilt and pay a fine or risk a bigger fine if they dont. The reason it is being challenged is that it is a breach of a citizens right to remain silent- apparently it could spell the end of the current method of enforcement.I shall stay away from controversy by expressing a view. I gather that the authorities are currently testing speed cameras that fit into cats eyes and they might not give us warning of there locations.

Interesting info 38th, thanks.

One stud measures speed and another houses an infrared camera that photographs license plates at speeds up to 150 MPH
Right, we're sorted then... 151+mph only guys an' gals!

I heard about those cats eye cameras, guess where they are testing them as we speak... Dorset!!!

I know that until a couple of years ago anyway (from a friend who is a traffic cop) there is a 7% (as I remember) variance on the speedometer of your car, therefore any speed cameras should allow for this variance.
The reason for this is because it is in the majority of cases the speedo a mechanical device which is subjected to wear over time.
Tyre size / wear also affects this value as speedos
This is (apparently) one of the main reasons that the camera partnerships will NOT release information on what their limits are. Simply beccaue a driver can in 'good faith' think he / she is travelling @ 70 (according to his speedo) and actually be travelling 75.
In the past the authoritys in Northern Ireland used to set up vans and have a two camera system which read number plates and checked the tax disc (yeah I know far fetched but true).

Work with the Police here in Texas US, but have some insight into UK also.
1. 10% rule (used to) be talking about the accuracy of Radar Guns (handheld). They were not (and still really not) 100% balls on dead accurate) so a margin was allowed. Also they have to have a certificate of test/calibration regularly (although it differs per manufacturer of gun itself) and if out of test date, by even a day, it is NOT legal.
2. Gatso, oh my god! Not here thankfully but....... My Dad uses a "Road Angel" I think it is, and it has saved his but, many many a time. You can download the stationary updates free from online straight into it and it picks up the "roving" cameras also.
3. I would say "challenging" a ticket is a risk but often a good "bet". An officer has to turn up and that is often more costly to a force than the fine and hence it is dropped. Works here anyway.
Good luck and drive safe.

Nothing yet.....they've got 9 working days to serve me notice!!
Interesting info though!
-
Over here it takes months before you receive anything. (So you don't precisely remember all the details of the event  ) And even if you disagree, you have to pay first.
If then, by some miracle, the judge finds you're right, you have a very limited amount of time to ask for your money back.
Motorists are being hunted like pheazants in this country.

And you with that nice big car too!!

Rat
if I remember correctly (when I lived in Netherlands) if caught speeding over a certain limit they took your car. Plain and simple car gone, for GOOD!
Diamond merchant I knew said another guy got his Ferrari taken on second day of having it for doing over 100mph on motorway.
Also, Netherlands has two Apache Helicopters on Police Force right? Used to have as caught some bank robbers using one whilst I was there.
Wild wild country, GREAT people though, some of BEST in the world!
-
If you go 50 kph over the limit they'll take your licence, the judge will decide wether or not you'll get it back. Extreme speeding and reckless driving will cost you your licence and car.
I haven't heard about the Apache helicopters on the police force. They should use those for football riots.
An Apache in your rear view mirror, that'll scare you to death. Especially when your laser detector detects missile lock.

Personally that thought makes me want to be a Dutch traffic cop ;)

Yeah
blew me away when I saw it.
Was about 14 years ago dealing with a bank robbery in Utrecht I think.
Anyway, deciphered some of the news (where saw first), then was in the paper the next day. Then asked a Dutch friend and he confirmed they were Police Apache's!!!!!!!!!!
They were LOADED, evrything cept missiles it seems.
They caught the robbers in a wood at duck using thermal imaging!!!!!!!
Now THAT'S a pursuit vehicle!

That just reminds me of Harry Enfield's sketch with the Dutch Police!

Was that the one about legalizing burglary?

I could have accepted the one about the stoned cops, but being on the receiving end of truncheons / batons in any fashion is not my thing thankyou very much :)
