Howdy folks, this is Thor. I am the guitarist in a prog/power metal band known as Archaic Reign. I found out about Bare Knuckles from Mark Briody who plays guitar in Jag Panzer - thank you Mark!
I just recently got a set of Miracle Man pickups straight from Bare Knuckles and I couldn't be happier. The following clip was just recorded this morning, it is a rough draft of a song that we are currently working on. There is no bass, vocals, or lead guitar yet as I just wanted to see what they sounded like recorded. My setup is as follows:
Dean custom Time Capsule V -> Morley Bad Horsie II -> Boss TU-2 Tuner -> ISP Decimator (foot pedal) -> Engl Powerball -> Marshall 1960A Cabinet (stock speakers)
I recorded the guitar (which I double tracked) with a Sure SM-57 microphone that is centered on the upper right cone. I run this into a Behringer Eurorack UB1002 mixer (with all EQ's set to 0) and then into a Fostex MR-8 multi-track recorder. I dumped the two guitar tracks into Acoustica's Mixcraft and mixed with the drums and keyboards. I did no equalization to the guitar tracks at all, what you are hearing is the raw guitar tracks.
Fantastic pickups! Thank you Bare Knuckles!

Very good!!! :D

Great metal tone, and playing! That reminds me of Facing Hell by Ozzy at some points. I'd love to hear the final song!
-
awesome, i have an engl savage se, and i'm interested in the miracle man- the powerball is close enough to the savage se sound to give me a good indication!
thanks again!
EDIT: woot, listened to it! sounds fantastic!

excellent stuff. Got to love the prog metal. Really nice tone. I have a Powerball as well, what awesome amps. Loving your tone. I havent tried my head through anything apart from an Engl cab so i am going to have to experiment.
Keep up the good work. Keyboards are very Dream Theater! Which is awesome.

Welcome Thor- and what a debut !

That was hella cool!
Should've been called MJOLNIR, lol

Very nice tone, you have pretty much my dream rig.

Welcome Thor, great clip, thanks for posting.............it really shows off the tight crunch and bright harmonic tone of the Miracle Man humbuckers 8)

Thanks guys, I am really digging these pickups!
My only criticism is a mechanical one. The ring mount tabs on the pickups are a little longer than standard as compared to Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, and EMG. They are a good 3/16" or so longer. I had to route out the neck pickup hole so that the tabs (and the whole pickup) could sit in lower. I hadn't noticed it until I was about to put the strings back on when I saw the neck pickup in profile in relation to the neck, the strings would be sitting on the pickup itself! So I gingerly routed out extra space in my beloved V with a Dremel rotary tool to make the pickup fit correctly. Not a big deal for myself, but someone without as much experience, or the right tools, could become extremely frustrated and can either wreck their guitar or leave it to the fate of some guitar shop hack.
Anyway, thank you all for the great comments! I will be purchasing another set for yet another Dean V soon after the Holidays.
Thanks again Tim! :D

The Legs on ours are the same as the origional gibson PAF, we do also make all of our pickups with short legs, but most guitars fit long legs.

thats a bloody great clip mate! nicely done 8) sounds like its gonna be a cracker. is Thor your real name? i want your name...and ur amp.

I have never had a Gibson (well I did have an Epiphone at one point in time) or have seen their PAF pickups. I didn't mean it as a slam, by no means, just an observation. So when I order the next set does this mean that I can get them with shorter legs?
@indysmith: You can probably get Engl amps a whole lot cheaper than I can! And as far as you know, yes that is my real name. :P
-
I didn't take it as a slam, dont worry. Short legs wont be a problem.
Awesome clip, very tight playing and brilliant tone. Keep 'em comming!
-
great clip, keep em coming 8)

Excellent clip Thor. Great playing and sound.
But isn't it illegal for a prog-rock song to be in 4/4?
-
Lovely clip. Is there a reaons to record form the top cone rather then the bottom ones?
also do you record mono or one track in stereo?

Not that this is a competition - but that was one of the best clips on the forum!
-
Thank guys.
@Keano: The selection of cabinet speaker was solely based on the location of the mic stand and how it was already set up.
I recorded two separate guitar tracks in mono and panned them a little left and right of center in the stereo spectrum.

DUDE! that was sick!
that tone is the best i heard yet for a MM clip!
your clip should be the one that showcases the tone of the MM pup
when someone asks "what does this MM sound like?"
got any lead stuff clips?
I can only imagine how great the lead will sound with that tone!
-
Yes! that was Righteous tone, Thor. Can't wait to hear some leads with that tone. Awesome first post.

I had the same problem with my cold sweat neck pickup it had long feet and i had to route the guitar out, which for me wasnt a problem.. but could be for other people, although all the previous pickups i'd orderd had been short feet.
I'll just remember next time to specify short feet, if i ever need new pickups lol.
I've got an ENGL Screamer 50 here and I must say the Vintage 30 speakers just dont do it for me with the engl the 75watt celestions in marshall cabs are far better.. my mate thom also agrees and he owns a powerball.
-
hey thor
its mailman from the dean forum
-
I've got a MM in a strat and I run it thru a Powerball and a 5150 cab, get a very similar tone.
Sounds quite badass, I just gotta find a way to refine that MM a -little- bit.
-
simply... WOW
