Title: neck pickup advice needed!
Post by: northlane.josh on November 29, 2010, 02:55:12 PM
Hey guys,
I've owned a fair few guitars with some different types of BKP's now, mostly the contemporary range. I've come to the conclusion that my construction of choice is a maple neckthrough with mahogany wings and either a maple or ebony board.
C-pigs seem to work fantastically well in this combination, all the way down to Ab and I couldn't be happier with this bridge pickup.
However, I am starting to tire of the neck 'pig. It doesn't clean up as well as i would like it too and it's too dark and hot for my tastes. I would like something a little cleaner sounding, less output, more high-mids, less lows and just brighter overall. I have tried a cold sweat I had spare and found it was too bright and not high enough output to go with the pig in the bridge (which i do have set very far down).
I'm thinking a painkiller neck might be the go? I don't have one to try out and have only used this pickup in a les-paul type guitar so I'm not sure how it will go. I love lots of mids and for my cleans I run outer-coils of both pickups, or just use the neck in series for a bit more bite/cut.
Any tips would be much appreciated!
Cheers

It does depend on the pickup but I usually prefer A5's in the neck so I think I will go for an aftermath

The Aftermath is 11k, the Painkiller is 14k. I personally think the Aftermath neck has enough power to balance with the C-Pig. Honestly, the Painkiller or Aftermath with ceramic would be worth considering. If you're set on A5 more power to you, but I find my Aftermath neck with a ceramic magnet has a ton of midrange and attack. It's very bitey with lots cut and articulation, and IMHO has an amazing clean tone.

I think you're def describing the painkiller neck, it has high mids, is the most articulate and clear neck pickup EVER! Coil-split for beautiful cleans! more output than the cold sweat.  I love the damn thing!
