Title: AC-DC sound
Post by: kieto33 on December 03, 2010, 09:06:48 PM
Im having trouble deciding..  I have a PRS hollow body 1.  Want a little more growl out of it than the stock pickups.  But i do not want to go too bright.
Looking for the AC-DC sound..  Malcolm, more so..  I have put in an order for Mules, but.....  Riff Raff...???  What do you guys think?
Using a Tiny terror, orange 1x12 cab.  Tube screamer..
Thanks.

For guys who have tried both pickups, which is brighter? The AV mule or the Riff Raff? I'm asking about bridge pickups of course  :)

The Mule is quite bright as well, maybe Crawler would work for you! I have them in an LP, not bright at all.

Malcolm's sound is a Gretsch Jet with Filtertrons.  It's a guitar that sits right in between hollow and solid body and has a pickup that sits right in between humbucker and single coil.

A Riff Raff or Mule will make you sound more like Angus.

I'd look at the Mississippi Queen.

That and I have nowhere near his rhythm or ability.
Have a set of Queens that I like but, hate to say it, they sound too clean in this guitar.  Which i found odd for a P90 type pickup.  Think i will let the order stand, and if its not the sound...  Off i go again. Guess thats part of the fun, chasing that sound in your head..
Thanks for the input guys.

Mules or Crawlers for a sligthly less bright topend.

Mules will be excellent, don't worry :)

For me riff raffs are a  brighter sounding pickup. In a mahogany bodyed guitar they absolutly nail acdc.  I do not know enough on a prs holllowbody guitars  to comment on if  raff raffs would be too bright in that type of guitar.  One thing is for sure though a set of mules or riff raffs will be a real treat!

As I was reading down the thread, I felt a big +1 to this:

A Riff Raff or Mule will make you sound more like Angus.

I'd look at the Mississippi Queen.

But with the posts following it, especially as you've already tried the MQs, I reckon I'll join in on the chorus of you're probably gonna be ok with Mules.

I had mules in a LP alike. The bridge is a great, great pickup. I wasn't too sold on the neck unit - I found it a little wooly for my liking although this could have been my installation skills!

riff raffs probably would be a slightly better choice for the tone you want... but the A5 Mule bridge is my favourite BKP, so :) :) :)
