Title: Got the Miracle Man's in my Suhr!!! ...
Post by: ShredHeadJHJ on December 06, 2010, 02:09:57 AM
But...

The tech wired them the wrong way on the switch, so everything is reversed!!! I had a bit of a special request, and I wanted the mid-position of my 5-way to be the bridge and neck INNER coils together ONLY. The tech had a few problems finding good wiring diagrams for this. He eventually thought that he fried the super switch that was already in the guitar and he put in a standard SwitchCraft switch, but it turned out his guitar cable actually gave out! Sounds funny, but he was a super nice guy, and these kind of things happen to the best of us.

Anyways, I have to take it back to have him rewire it. I think I'm going to have him put back the old super switch in just fo shites. I don't think there will be any problems there, and it shouldn't be fried.

They sound great though! A more detailed review will follow, but I am surely happy with the sound. they don't seem to be splitting all that great like the Aldrich's, but hey, its all good. Just wish I had a solid diagram to give the guy tomorrow.

Looking forward for your review. From clips, videos and some user reviews on harmony central I found the MMs seem to have a hollow/tuby quality in the low mids which gives a deep sound to them. If it's true that's what I'm after.

Hey hunter I saw your high gain shootout video on youtube. Very carefully thought and well made. Really helpful. I liked the SG with the MMs and the Axis with stock pickups the most for heavy stuff.

They sound really good. I will need some time with them. I have finals Wednesday, so I won't be able to play until then. After school Wednesday I will be taking my guitar to have the wiring fixed as well. I just can't stand that switch reversed. I will surely get a great review up, but at first glance, compared to the Suhr Aldrichs, they are

more metal
tighter
deeper punch
better chuggz
smoother high end
less mids
all around less "all over the place" frequency wise  :D
not NEARLY as good split... almost pointless to split these at first glace... but I need to do more experimenting... I'm almost thinking the wiring is more messed up than just reversed...
easier on the ears
less cutting
surprisingly, cleans probably just as good, or even better!

:D I'm happy. I take the bad with the goods, and I just need to really get these dialed in to see what all they're capable of. I believe they're exactly what I was looking for :U

More detailed review to come. Just wish I had a good wiring diagram. The tech was pulling wiring diagrams out of all kinds of sites.

I've got a good diagram but its with position 2 being the inner coils only.

it has

1. bridge humbucking
2, inner coils of both pickups (parralel if the neck pickups mag is reversed out of phase if it isnt)
3 both humbucking
4, neck parallel
5 neck humbucker

i attached it for you :) It's for an ibanez but the colours have been switched around to be for BKP and im sure it will help the tech get closer to what you want

You may have to reverse the magnet in one pickup , unless it was already specially made that way by BKP for this wiring to work right and to be hum-cancelling in the positions where an Ibanez would be

Well, I'm not really interested in clean or split sounds from bridge. I'm thinking about an HSS MM/Trilogy/Trilogy set, so it'll be fine for me in any way.

Just curious, having both hums on full blast, what tone would one be trying to achieve? I never liked that sound much...

neither have i.

It's a bit too thick and undefined but it guess some people have a use for it otherwise it wouldn't be a standard wiring option on every H-H guitar

I thought this was kind of odd. Here were the ratings on the slip for my MM's:

Bridge 18.5 DC
Neck 18 DC

Thought that was hotter than expected...

I'm not sure what the neck should be but my Bridge is 17.7k i would imagine the neck should usually be a bit lower thought.

But if they sound good it doesnt really matter

Just a bit hotter, and a bit less of a difference than I imagined. It's definitely all goood though, just weirded me out a tad.

The Miracle Man neck is identical to the bridge, but with an alnico V magnet instead of ceramic. They should be more or less the same DC resistance :)

Got the pick-ups fixed! 8) Unfortunately, the guy who wired them wasn't able to figure out how to get the bridge/neck slug coils tapped together for the middle position of my 5-way... :(

I haven't played it through my amp since I got them fixed, but I played them through a Marshall JVM 4-channel amp and it freaking sounded AWESOME. What a cool amp. I'm really surprised by what Marshall put out. The cleans even sounded really really great on this amp.

I'm going to play through them later though my amp when I get home from work. I've been super excited about these pups for a while because I can tell they're what I wanted, but damn it sucks that I haven't had time to play lately.

Took my gear over to my drummer friend's house last night, and jammed for about 4 hours :) :) :) Finally, to say the least, I got to crank my amp with the Miracle Man's.

OH. MY. I was just blown away by how much better I sounded with these pups. I really got much MUCH closer to that sound I was looking for. Much more saturation, tightness, fullness, and tight thump. Also, I wasn't getting that DEADLY amount of treble out of my Quick Rod like I always got before. Not knocking the Rod, because it's the best amp out there, but I just think it can be finnicky with super bright, upper mid-heavy pups like the Suhr Aldrich's.

I liked that I'm getting about the same note definition with the MM's. It's like the sound is thicker and much tighter, but I can still hear the individual notes. It's hard to explain it, and I've never changed pick-ups in a guitar and got this drastic of results. What REALLY surprised me is that it seems like I was actually even getting better cleans. Also worth noting that, with a drummer in the mix, it seemed like I wound up having to set EVERYTHING (except volume and gain :D ) to about 12:00, and voila! I even set the presence/treble a tad higher and no ice-picky sound!!!

My negative criticisms would be that I can tell these pups won't cut as much as the Aldrich's. That's probably, in reality, a very good thing though, because I don't seem to be getting that piercing high end like I was getting with the Aldrich's.

Did I mention how much better the zebra coils look!!??

And poor Yngwie guitar... As excited as I am about it, I played it for a few songs, and it was pretty cool. Wasn't gelling with it playing with a drummer yet, but it needs more setting up to get perfect... BUT once I pulled out the Suhr with the MM's I just couldn't put it down! Maybe the YJM will have a BareKnuckle day one day

Cool!

Yeah, the quickrod is upper-mid voiced so the MMs (low mids) must be a hell of a good match. They might not cut as much but they must surely fill the band spectrum better.

I think the MM will suit me best. Tight, defined, full and deep. Cool for Thrash up to Exodus-Overkill-Testament and some In Flames.

I'm gonna pair it with Trilogies middle and neck for YJM/Blackmore tones and be set!

Although it will be a while before I get a new guitar, I was actually thinking about trying out this set up... Then I started thinking how much I want to try a Calibrated Ceramic Nail Bomb set in my next guitar  PDT_003 PDT_002 PDT_004 PDT_005 :band4:

Thought it was odd when I looked at the H/S/S sets on the site the other day, and noticed that they sell the Miracle Man Bridge bunched with the Trilogy Suite Middle/Neck... Seems like, judging from the name alone, these would not mesh well.

What about the Ceramic Nail Bomb with mid/neck Sinners?

Holy Diver with mid/neck Trilogy Suites?

Anyone try these sets out? Seems like, based on what I hear around here, these both these sets would gel better than the MM/TS set they sell as a package here... Hmmm...

If you see the regular Trilogy set is 15K/11K/11K. With the MM Tim winds the Trilogies to match it (around 13K).;)

It is almost a good idea to complement your sound in the spectrum.

I bought a painkiller for exactly this reason. I play a diezel Herbert which has tons of bass, but is not that pronounced in the higher mids. With the painkiller - perfect combination

I have a Holy diver bridge / Trilogy suite neck in my alder body/maple top and rosewood/maple necked strat. I still have the Irish tour in the middle, which was in the guitar originally when I got it.

TS and Holy diver go very well together!

This post ^ caused me a bit of concern 3 days ago as I was just about to order a pair of Trilogy neck & middle to go with my MM.

So I wrote Tim and asked him if I simply ordered a Trilogy neck &/or middle, would they be wound 11K or 13K?  He responded "I've been winding them @ 12.5K for the last five years".

Sorted

(FWIW, I ordered a pair 2 days ago, and they already shipped 1 day ago, how's that for BKP's holiday service!  I'm excited)  :D

I emailed you back man. Yes, I would say that the MM is very well suited for the melodic death metal sound.
