Title: Need preamp suggestions
Post by: murraymurray on December 22, 2010, 05:11:25 AM
Yo, ive got a soldano sp77 into an old marshall 9005 poweramp

was thinking of hooking up a second preamp to run in stereo for some fat tones. was thinking something jcm800ish, maybe a bit more gain, you know standard request of hot rodded marshall tone.

thing is i cant be bothered with things like the jmp, i just want a basic knob controlled set up.

anything out there that you would recommend for this sorta tone

my other plan was to get someone to just build me an 800 preamp, have a suitable chassis from an old bass preamp that i could use

Lee Jackson preamps come to mind here, but they're sky-high due to Alexi Laiho and his fanbase. Haflers are great little dudes and pop up on Ebay for cheap often enough, not sure of the circuit topology though I think the sound would be what you're looking for. Peavey Rockmaster is pretty plug and play, but not really the circuit you're looking for. FJA Mods can do a custom pre for you for like $600 USD. You could always try to wrap your head around things yourself and get some help at http://music-electronics-forum.com/ They're nice guys and will help as long as you can keep up a little.  :)

wish I could think of more that are Marshally and non-midi or whatever

I have a couple of these for sale - really good - uses knobs and you can save the settings once you are happy

Only reason I don't use them now is because I have gone down the Egnater and Randall Modular Pre-amp route

Would love to be able to justify going down the modular route, but dont even know if this will end up being for gigging im just trying to find something cheap locally (NZ), and for the same reason i think postage on one of youre rocktrons or that starfield would be a bit of a killer

a sansamp psa1 (not 1.1) just turned up on the local auction site, is that what you were meaning by the original sansamp rack gwEm?

some wierd knobs on there, are they used to change the whole character so you can go from something like marshall, or crank up the "buzz" knob and get rectifier in the same unit, could be quite cool to play around with.

the PSA sansamp racks have knob controls, but one disadvantage is that if you change patches, obviously the knobs don't move and then you need to look at the change LED. i don't know if this bothers you?

the nice thing with the really early version of the sansamp rack (before even the PSA) is that there are no patches (just on, off and a slightly redundant live control which is meant to switch off the cabinet simulation) so wherever the knobs are is the tone you get.

the flexibility with sansamp units in the tone you get is really quite remarkable - fender, marshall and mesa tones are easy to dial in, and with a wide range of gains. its also very tight in the bass. the disadvantage is that since its a solid state unit, it doesn't clean with the volume knob up quite as well as one might hope.

if you can get one at a cheap price it would be worth trying it (in my opinion) to see if you like it. you can also use it as a modeler - straight into a desk.

the buzz, punch and crunch controls are more like pre-distortion EQs. there is also bass and treble post-distortion EQs. thats the secret to the wide range of tones.

i've been using sansamp gear for years. there is that one disadvantage i mentioned with the volume knob clean up, but the units are generally good sounding, reliable and reactive to player technique.

regarding the piranha, its a really nice preamp and i would like one, but you know the usual cost and space aspects involved with GAS!

the nice thing with it is, that it does have knobs, and furthermore (as far as I recall, I'm sure Feline will correct me) there is no 'change LED' system. its of higher quality construction than the JMP, with toroid transformers and the valves are driven at amp voltages and the editting system is pretty nice as i mentioned. it has a sweepable mid boost/cut so you get a wide range of tones too, and it has potential for ridiculous gain - mind you the sansamp does too.

Cheers gwem, think i mightve seen the earlier model once, has it got a model name? i just recall sansamp written quite big across it?
might see how cheap the dude will do the psa, hes selling it with a poweramp which im already sorted for so asked if he will split it up
only rocktron stuff ive seen locally is the prophesy and voodu valve, would like to try a piranha if one ever pops up

i attach a picture of mine here, its almost certain to be the one you saw once. i don't know if it has an official name - I just call it the "original SansAmp rack". Apparently there were a few variations of it, and they seem to be relatively uncommon (I won't say rare though).

i like its immediacy concerning the controls, it sounds a little bit different to the PSA, but not much. i have a PSA1.1 I should sell one day.
