Title: NSD and NCCD! (video added)
Post by: hunter on December 28, 2010, 11:15:28 AM
New Switcher Day and ... by accident ... New Clean Channel Day!

I got a GSC-3 switcher off Rig-Talk and wired it up today. I wasn't planning on any weird stuff, but by accident I discovered a clean channel on my Mk50H!

Reason is the way I wired up the loop. In order to be able to switch the Delay in the loop of the amp as well, I used a common trick, where I sent the signal from the looper via its loop5 (any would work) to the amp in, got the signal back from the effect send of the amp to loop5 return, then the Delay in loop6 and the out of the GSC to the Mk50H effect return.

The plan was to leave loop5 on at all times and to switch the delay in and out with loop6. By accident I had a sound with the RC Booster up front and the loop5 off, so in fact I had the preamp of the Mk50H bypassed. Great clean tone, basically RC Booster => Delay => Amp FX return.

Works and sounds great!

How cool is that????

With the ALA Loop Adapter I can adjust levels so that the preamp signal of the Cornford and the direct signal: Pedals=>Poweramp is balanced volume and impedance wise.

Signal chain is
Guitar => Wah => GSC-3 In
Loop 1: Retro Sonic
Loop 2: EP Booster
Loop 3: Meistersinger Chorus
Loop 4: RC Booster
Loop 5: Loop Send to amp in, Amp Send => ALA-1 In, ALA-1 Out=> Loop Return
Loop 6: Providence Delay
GSC-3 Out => ALA-1 In => Amp Return

Switcher1/2 Out to Control Gain 1/2 and Master 1/2 of the Cornford.

Alternatively I will run a Midi chain to the Amp, so I can use the Steavens via Midi in or the Bogner 100B via a Nobels MS-4 switcher.

Guess I am pretty set.

By the way, I haven't even yet opened the manual of the GSC-3, it's a breeze to program, so easy!

If you get hands on a switcher and have a preamp pedal for cleans, like the RC, or a Tech21 or something in that vein, I can only recommend it. You might have to get something like the ALA-1 to match levels and impedances.

Thanks I am quite happy.

That sounds way too complex for my brain to deal with in the morning...

Great clip though.

Yeah it can appear a bit compicated to start with. But once you start wiring it up it comes natural. Think of it as a robot foot that does your cable plugging and tap dancing.

In a gig situation it's much easier to play with this than switch amp, effects and all the old tap dancing way.

For example going from clean to lead, you just hit the lead switch rather than switch amp channel, amp master, boost pedal and delay pedal, while switching the chorus off. I guess you can get the idea ...

I thought I was going hi-tech with a delay in the loop!

Nice setup Hunter, sounds great too  :D

i remember i plugged a guitar direct into my marshall 20-20 power amp, and it had a great clean straightaway. i'm sure the RC, with its EQ section gives more tunability. though, on the 20-20, i had the option of the low end boost switch, as well as the presence control for at least some adjustment.

Thanks guys.

Having discovered the new possibilities with the switcher, I am more looking at 1 channel amps with loops again. Gives a different perspective as well on the AFD-100, I bet it would sound great with a nice preamp pedal and direct to poweramp.

I was thinking about getting something like the Tech21 Liverpool or similar, for some voxish cleans.

Dave, don't you have an AFD100 on order?

Yep, just waiting for it to arrive at my local dealer.  I'll be calling in today to see if it turned up while I was away over Christmas......

Good luck!

From all I heard, reviews, clips, videos, ... this amp should sound smashing! I bet they will be sold out in no time. Unfortunately I have 3 amps too many already right now ...

I fancy one of those too

Just made a test with a Line6 pocket pod instead of the RC Boost. Nice to be able to do such things without messing up the other tones (thanks to the looper/switcher).

It was mellower and nice in a way, but the pod introduced noise into the signal chain, even when switched out of it.

Pity those Tech21 pedals have cab sim on the out that can not be deactivated.

It deactivates its self (supposedly).

Anyway, in practise wether the cabinet sim deactivates or not has never been a problem for me when going direct into an amp with my Sansamp British.

I have had problems with the Tech21 GT2, however I think this is mostly because my GT2 has become slightly weird after years of heavy gigging.

gwEm, I don't think it deactivates itself. Maybe it's less dulling than other amp sims though. I read in several places that it doesn't sound good in front of an amp, too compressed, but that it sounds great into an amps FX return (or a tube poweramp=> guitar cab), which is exactly what I intend to do with it.

The new character series pedals (Rectifier, Orange and Hiwatt) all have extra buttons for cab sim deactivation. I wonder if that will ever come on the Liverpool.

sansamp claim:

Quote
Another aspect of the technological advancement of SansAmp,is a single output that is physically com-
patible for any application.SansAmp’s Universal Output makes it possible to use the same output with
the following:

Then they go on to describe the hifi / lofi mode that the universal output can produce.

I think the EQ on some of the SansAmp models is post-gain, which would make make any cabinet sim easy to compensate for in any case. I had good experiences with it at least, but have often wondered exactly what they meant by this universal output.

That sounds a lot like marketing sheebang to me  8)

Hm, I can't seem to find a cheap Liverpool anywhere ...
