Title: 2011 - Resolutions?
Post by: MrBump on December 31, 2010, 08:29:15 PM
I seem to remember these threads not catching on, but I'll have a go!

I'm 40 in 2011, so I need to lose about 3 stone before May.  That's one resolution.

And I'm going to be nicer to the wife - not that I'm particularly NOT nice, but I think that paying her a little more attention might be a good idea.

And I'm going to build my perfect guitar, with the assistance of Warmoth and Bare Knuckle Pickups.

That's about all for 2011.

Happy New Year, y'all.

Mark.

I don't make resolutions. But in terms of goals for this year:

Get into uni.
Write at least another three albums.
Have another successful festival.
Get playing around, and out with, the UK again.

This year was pretty good, with getting a band signed and an album out, starting two new bands I really enjoy and getting back into education, but we had to downsize a festival and have decided not to repeat another, so hopefully the good stuff continues and the other stuff rights itself.

All the best to everyone.

1 stop smoking
2 build myself a slo clone

thats it really.

The second wont happen unless the first does as ill need a good chunk of the money that ill save from the 1st in order to make that and others to happen.

I've figured out ill save about £2600 in a year which is great ive decided im not making any guitar related purchases unless i can fulfill the 1st

I have a few ambitions for 2011 as opposed to resolutions
1) Finish a batch of guitars I plan to build
2) Have a damn good clear out of all stuff I never use
3) Raise enough money to get the laser cutter I mentioned being interested in
4) Get out on my bike a bit more - I miss cycling
5) Get more sleep
6) play more guitar
Title: Re: 2011 - Resolutions?
Post by: 38thBeatle on January 01, 2011, 02:14:03 AM
1)Visit my sons- one in Ireland and the other in USA
2) finish writing some unfinished songs and record an albums worth of material
3) get on with my bloody book
4)get healthy( I have had some issues lately)
5) do something bold like change my job

I am not saying they are resolutions but are aims for this year.

In no order:

I like how we all deny they're resolutions, but really they can be in some ways.

Happy new year, nevertheless.

Aiming to get rid of the rest of my fat, think I can do that next year. Also going to apply for a Canadian or New Zealand working holiday visa to get away from here for a bit. If that doesn't work I'm gonna have to try and get a proper job. Be good to get into a band as well, generally just have more fun!

Spend less time on the internet looking at guitar related things and just play
Potty train the boy
Getting married
Get running again and set some PB's
Be less grumpy
Go to more gigs
Get an ES330 / Casino type guitar
Read less guitar magazines and more books
Generally put more than the minimum into life
Get gigging more

Continue to abstain from smoking, I am a reformed smoker
Get into law school instead of sitting on the applications
Continue strength training (Specifically get 166 kgs up on a one rep bench press)
Do something with my life instead of being a vacuous waste of space.  yes I have a degree from a university but eh doesn't seem like enough .

I'm going to be very busy this year with working but this is the target

*Be more physically active, country/forest walks etc
*Focus on further improving on guitar instead of spending too much time on the net
*Move out
*Buy a newer car
*Go to more gigs
*Maybe put my own 'album' together

Get out of dead end job and start PhD (already applied hope I'm accepted)
Get back to gym and cycling (used to go 6 days a week then the snow came)
Learn how to drive.
Do up the guitars I've already got if need be whilst waiting for Feline custom rather than get anymore.

That's about it, hope you guys all the best for 2011

Martyn

Continue working towards qualifying as a dietitian :D
Start working out again
Eat better again
Restring the Jackson

Got a load of fish as I'm going to try carb cycling and see how low I can get my body fat levels, I'm 12% body fat now, need 8% for abs so the plan is 2 weeks carb cycling but I think I'll run out of fish first

Clear my credit card and overdraft so I can get myself the nice car I've been promising myself for a while, and to eat healthier to lose about a stone a weight.  Maybe join a gym?

Alright Dave - looks like we have pretty much the same aims! We're just about to clear a load of debt down in prep for bedlam in May. I'll be buying a new car although it isn't one of my dreams and I also need to lose weight - more like 1.5st for me though.

1. Stop drinking for 3 months so my liver and wallet can recover.
2. Learn every song in my Hendrix tab book.
3. Find a proper job which makes the most of my degrees, so I don't feel my time at uni was a waste.
Maybe most importantly...
4. Spend less time looking at forums and more time practising

Very hard work though - I'm up at 14st 8lbs at the moment. The first stone should be easy, not so sure after that! One more day of bad eating before I go back to work and get into serious healthy mode.

Not so much "resolutions" as "general statements of intent" :)

More physical activity (I'm usually quite active & fit, but 2010 was a very "lazy" year :))
Drink less (at least one "dry" day per week to give my liver a bit of a rest)
Practice guitar more (as opposed to just playing aimlessly)

Ah, but how tall are you?  I'm usually 12.5 stone but I'm only 5'6" so I still look pretty porky.

I've had a bit of a head start, because I've been ill all Christmas so I've eaten a lot less than normal, just about managed most of the main meals but no "snacks" at all and very little alcohol.

Don't want to go to the gym straight away though, because it will be full of fat delusional New Year Resolutioners (....exactly like me  :| ).

Hey Philly, I have been in the same boat. I have been ill for all the Christmas break and am only now beginning to feel better and its back to work tomorrow! But the good thing is that like you, I have lost weight but I have no scales to see how much but my band mates noticed it on New Years Eve ( you look like sh*t mate etc etc).
Title: Re: 2011 - Resolutions?

I was about 22 stone this time 2-3 years ago, now just under 16 and still dropping :) Gym really doesn't work for me, I have to actually enjoy the exercise otherwise I won't do it - so mountain and road biking is what I do. Apparently it's good to build up the leg muscles as well as they're big and will help your body burn more calories at rest.

I've also just decided on another "resolution" - really need to sort out being more sociable and actually learn how to have a proper conversation, actually about to order a book on conversation "skills" as I'm so rubbish at it

As a gym enthusiast I can say do beware of the new years resolution spike.  People go into the gym thinking "I'll lose 10 kg in a month!" then get disheartened when they put on mass or don't seem to lose weight.  They get complacent or completely burned out and stop.  It just takes time and a bit of effort to do these things, and a bit of acquired knowledge on the biology and chemistry of your body. I went from 12 stone to 17 stone but over a 3 year period (I am 188cm tall so it was okay)  every weight training session or roadwork day was kind of rough but having a general goal and smaller ones along the way does help a lot.

1] Phil, I'm 6ft 2" so I can carry about 16 &1/2 to 17 stones and look okay and be healthy - traditional story of what extra I carry is around my middle, unfortunately haven't been around that weight for about 10 years now and my poor old bones can feel the strain of carrying the extra
2] Phil and 38, sorry to hear you were unwell over the festive season, hope you are both well on the way to recovery
3] Tom, your story is really quite inspirational, clearly when you decide to achieve something you can, I wish I had your degree of focus...my twopenneth but conversations that work are almost always about being willing to listen

Yeah well done Tom, I knew you'd lost a lot of weight but I didn't realise it was as much as six stone!  :)  I think you're right that "enjoyable activity" is the best and healthiest way to lose weight, gyms are grim places but I'm really not an outdoorsman....

Good luck with the conversational skills too!  I'm not too good myself but I have improved as I've got older.  Agree with David that listening is a big part, also it's important to relax - don't try too hard or everything starts to feel and sound "forced".  Nothing wrong with a bit of companionable silence sometimes!

Mr 38th - commiserations, it's annoying to have used several holiday days and been sick the whole time isn't it!   But on the other hand it's quite nice not to have the straining trousers and "I need to detox" feeling.

Title: Re: 2011 - Resolutions?
Post by: 38thBeatle on January 03, 2011, 04:25:53 PM
Tom, that was fantastic and I am sure you will carry on and achieve your goal.I went to see a Doctor just before Christmas ( I never normally go near those places but a number of people told me to go saying helpful things like" you have to be careful at your age" ) and whilst talking about exercise, he said that in his opinion, cycling was the best form of exercise as it doesn't strain the joints too much and give a great cardio vascular doodah( stop me if I am getting technical) so I think your choice of cycling makes sense. I ought to do it as I live on the edge of town with a lot of lovely country roads nearby and a forest just 3 minutes walk away. I used to be a competitive swimmer when I was a teenager and I ought to do that.

Thanks for your good wishes David and yours Philly. I can't remember being laid as low as this before and I am pleased at last to say that I am getting better. I had the most awful cough( try singing in  a band when you have a cough!)which is now finally going after 6 weeks. Mrs 38th nagged me and I finally got around to using her patented cough remedy and b*gger me, it seems to be working. An onion soaked overnight in honey and then strained off- you have the onion juice/honey off a spoon whenever you feel the need. Doesn't taste as bad as it sounds and seems to be doing the trick. I wish I'd have done it when Mrs 38th told me to many weeks back but don't tell her that.

Stop ruddy procrastinating.
Seriously, I just need to dig out the remote control for the DVD player and get down to the last part of the solo on Money. (Yes, I knew it once. But I've forgotten it) Ditto for Stairway to Heaven - I've got to the bit before the solo, and stopped. (It's on a DVD.)
And after that... actually learn something new. I've really let myself go quite a lot.

- Stop buying and selling gear

- Buy more guitars to get more BKPickups (I know this might not come along with the above resolution)

- Move into a flat or go for building our own house if my Gfriend get a good job.

Resolutions for this year were to save more money and get some professional qualifications (I work in pensions).

Managed to find a job 60 Miles closer (and £3k a year cheaper on the train), moving down to a Junior Pensions role but for more money and they will pay for me to enter exams for a Diploma in Pensions Calculation.

By the end of 2011 I'll have my House deposit saving finished, a Diamond ring purchased and a date set for a wedding.

2012 will be the year i stop saving maniacally and start buying better recording gear and a feline lion.
