Lovely maple cap - where are you getting your wood from (I am in the UK). I've built a couple of guitars from scratch and *need* to find some time to build another one (or three) :-)
Cheers,
Andy
-
search for wadkin1(seller name) or prime timbers(shop name) on ebay - he may not have maple listed at the moment - but is worth emailing to see what he has in stock (there is a lot of maple like this)
the neck wood was from david dyke
-
Thanks a lot - I'll look him up. I've used David Dyke before a couple of times...
My next project though has to be finishing head and speaker cabs for my home made amp (got some lovely cherry I need to find time to work on)...
Cheers,
Andy
Ps. Should have said earlier - your twin neck it looks absolutely amazing - very ambitious - looking forward to seeing it finished !!!
-
I think I prefer the bass controls in line. The other option might be too close behind the guitar bridge. A third option might be to put the tone by the neck (sort of Gretsch like). It looks phenomenal, the quilt is great.

+1 He has some great woods, and is a very friendly and helpful guy too in my experience.
Interesting instrument that one Wez! I guess it's going to weigh something "interesting" too when it's all put together. Ouch!
-
obviously its not going to be light - but i think i have it down to something reasonable. i am currently aiming for 12 lbs
-
Sure it's not gonna be light, but after all you're playing the whole band. Btw, nice timbers.
-
That quilted maple is awesome! Are you thinking of staining or applying a dye?
-
its probably going to be an ocean blue kinda colour - all over, not just the maple
similar to this alembic

-
Woo, that looks great Wez... :D
A bass and a twelve, eh? You getting ready to have a go at Supper's Ready?
-
How do you liking the Bocote? Tried to get a neck blank from Gilmerwood once and the conversation ended wrongly in a argument :? They told me it wouldn't be stable and if warmoth did it I should buy it from them...
Awesome the quilted maple on the double neck! That is a major figure for sure! Envious as a kid watching someone with ice cream :(
-
bocote is fine for necks and fretboards. it doesn't usually have the straightest grain but its plenty strong enough
last time i used it i forgot just how oily it could be and it did not glue properly... i am just typing that to remind myself not to do it again;)
-
Hummm interesting... How did you get it glued properly then? Epoxy glue?
-
That guitar looks ... heavy. Great, but heavy.

I've been told time and time again that a few good wipes with Acetone before gluing will take care of this problem. It pull the oils out of the wood near the surface. I am very curious to hear what Wez ended up doing though. :)
-
i have not done the bocote neck yet - but thats pretty much what i will do.
but some people wipe then glue straight away and wonder why they have problems down the line... gotta make sure the solvent is gassed off before glueing and not do it straight away!!! but those oils can start reappearing after a few hours on some pieces. Repeating the process a few hours apart will get rid of more oil and slow its return. but wood varies so its just taking the time to make sure you are free of solvent and oil and you can use epoxy or normal yellow wood glue like titebond
...
then you forget one time and it reminds you not to do it again.

done a test fit on the doubleneck before finish sanding kicks into high gear

Forgotten this one. It's not an instrument I'd actually want personally but, unlike many that fall into that category, there's something about this one that really appeals to me for looking at... I think it looks great.
You still going for the ocean blue? I have a nasty feeling I'll find it less appealing when it's finished - but then I've never owned or even considered owning a blue guitar (nothing against them, there's several sexy blue guitars on here that I know of, but sit it next to a red one of the same make and I'd never even think of touching the blue one )
By the way - how does a thing like this work amp-wise? Do you give it two output jacks or do you leave it up to the player to figure out how to amplify it?
-
its getting an XLR output which will go to a splitter box with foot switches to activate each neck, it wont ever be used with the same amp - so it doesnt need the option of a single output
i dont want two leads coming from it, which is what i was originally considering with a rick-o-sound style output scheme where one leads plugs in and everything goes through that, or its stereo with 2 leads plugged in
the other option was to use an ordinary stereo cable which could still use the splitter box idea or a Y-cable to each amp. but the XLR will allow more options with the grounding scheme if i have noise issues
anyway - there is a recessed output section to hide the xlr socket
-
the balance shot - resting in the palm of my hand and unsupported

and weight is currently 11lbs
-
Very nice! :)
-
It looks like it needs longer scale bass strings - the low E is still furry at the nut (no sly comments from Afghan Dave please!)?
I guess with the bass pickups it will be a 12lb job - not that far removed from one of Ben's misnamed Agiles!
Do the last 2 machines (low D, G), need string guides to keep the strings off the 5th position (high D, G)? It's hard to tell - is the length enough to keep them clear. The headstock shapes look great.
-
these are just spare strings to check alignment and stuff
i have not drilled the string ferrules yet which should give the extra 1/4" needed for the string wrap to be past the nut and of course there is the option of top loading the strings with this bridge
not sure on the last 2 tuners yet as i only have 6 strings on, i certainly drew it to miss but it does look close ??? will move some strings around to check
The finish, pickups and controls will all add weight - if it becomes an issue then i reckon different tuners could make quite a difference ( i will weigh them when i dismantle)... but these hipshots do look cool
-
11lbs with most of the hardware? That's pretty good if you ask me. That Wenge thing of mine that's waiting on funds for completion is at 10 with nothing at all on it. You have TWO necks.
It's lookin good, man. Lookin good. I think the blue you were planning for is still a winner. It'll sync up with those inlays.
-
Ah! XLR - I forgot about those, nice one.
That balancing pic looks fab.
11-12lbs, eh?
Philly's gonna think it's a deal-breaker... But it's not Philly!! That's only 6lbs an instrument - how many basses have you had that weigh in as low as 6lb?

It's an absolute deal-breaker. Unless you slice it in half down the middle...! :P
Looks good, though.

since the balance point seems to be so close to where the strap button will be i am hopeful the thing will stay in one place when hung on a strap. A bit of weight is fine if you dont have to fight it
i am not guaranteeing it coming in at a final 12lbs - be nice if its close but on an instrument this size even the lacquer could make a significant difference!!
we did swap from 30g chrome knobs to 5g ebony ones - amazing the difference it makes when you have 7 of them to fit on the guitar

I did something similar with the tuner buttons on my Thinline Tele, swapped them for pearloid ones - it was ridiculously neck-heavy before.

It does look very well-balanced, but I still think I'd be conscious of all that weight! When I (briefly) had that Tokai Love Rock II it was fairly well-balanced on a strap... but sitting down, when the body wasn't trying to dive towards the floor it felt like it was cutting off the circulation in my leg. :? Shame, because it was a really nice guitar.
Was it Jonathan on here who said the paint can add about half a pound to a finished guitar?
-
Since it's not an all night guitar, the weight won't be an issue. I used to gig with a Les Paul (though I was a lot younger!).

As the other Agile owning Ben, my Agile Lester is only 9lbs
