most guitar related stuff is cheaper in the US: MXR, DiMarzio, Gibson, Duncan etc etc

guess it comes down to lower transportation costs and a larger market

If you're looking for a Class 5 and you're in the UK, check out my Seconds Out thread, i've got one for sale, and it's cheaper than that eBay auction! :)

Oh and I hadn't even thought about China, so in that case you might be right again  :)

Isn't it cheap(er) because it's "manufacturer refurbished" (as stated at the top) or am I missing something?

Presumably "with everybody off the street coming in banging around on our equipment" it needed some work on it?

I would also bet that it's because of the competition. Marshall sells it cheaper in the US possibly because otherwise too few people would still buy/consider it.
One reason a lot of stuff is so expensive in Europe is NOT so much because of transport/duty etc., it is because people pay those prices, so they add a bit, increasing profit margins.
The same thing can be seen with cars. American customers are used to huge rebates on new cars and great deals. Car manufacturers have tried to get rid of those forever there, hardly with success. Similarly, the same Volkswagen car can often be bought cheaper in Spain than in the UK or Germany. It's even a problem with grey imports and reimports.
Another area you see this is also medicine. Lots of medicine is reimported from countries such as Greece and then sold in "more valuable" markets such as Germany.

So the morale might be never to question pricing policies - there's a lot of politics involved!

there will be 20% vat in the uk price(not in the us) , after that they can reduce margins because of volume of sales and to keep the brand strong in the biggest market.£ is reletively low against the dollar at the moment too but my money is on the pound strengthening into  Q2 of this year.

The Class 5 is definitely made in England.

Surely "manufacturer refurbished" is not new and therefore they wouldn't be selling it at "new" price irrespective if in UK or USA? I've bought 'manufacturer refurbished' printers at excellent prices before (which were as good as new).
