Title: Kind of a player request, please!
Post by: Nadz1lla on January 05, 2011, 10:42:33 PM
Could anyone on here do me a play-test, please?

I have defined a good Pod XT tone that I think would be good for that whole "Djent" sound, but I think it might be my guitar that just isn't cutting it.
Whoever wants to do this will need the "Metal Shop" add-on for it to work, as it uses the Engl modeller.

http://uk.line6.com/customtone/profile/NADZ1LLA/

The first one is old, please ignore that one, but tones Nadz Powerball 1 to Nadz Powerball 4 are the ones I'd like tested.

It would be really nice if Nolly or lepersmeesa could give one of them a go (if lepersmeesa even still visits us...*sniff* :(), as I am familiar with your sounds, guys, and I love them! But if anyone else has the Djent inclination and could plug your lovely guitars into this, then please do feel free!

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Djent? is it a band or a genre?

And I thought 'bombastic epic folk power metal' was a rubbish genre name :P

hahaha Djent is the onomatopoeia of the sound a 4 note power chord makes when it is choked with palm muting in the just the right way.  It's progressive metal with a Meshuggah and death metal tinges.  I think it is hilarious that we have stopped trying to make hybrid names for metal (i.e. "it's folkish doom sludge death hardcore  breakbeatcorecore") and now have come to relating a "genre" to the sounds related to it.  Electronica then can be "beep boop beep" or "bawooowwwwwuuuu bowwwwww".

i just call all of it br00talz myself :) its funny, because the kind of metal i like is almost called classic rock today :|

sorry i don't have a POD Nadzilla or I'd be interested to try your patches.

Heh, "Djent" is usually associated with Mathcore / Tech Metal and newer Progressive stuff. Usually containing poly-rhythmic sections aplenty.

Check out TesseracT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF_YIiRoRFM

Meshuggah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc

I didn't realise that is what Djent meant.

come to think of it though, the amount of times ive said "you know, like this... DJENT DJEEEENT DJENNNT" it kind of makes sense.

I do it with other stuff too like "ner ner... na ner ner... na ner ner" which is usually representative of some band playing octave harmonies over power chords to the point where it is completely sickening.

Aye, it's more of a description of a guitar sound rather than an actual "genre" of music. It's just that it is mostly associated with tech / prog / math bands. Although I have heard some Bring Me The Horizon that has that tasty "Djent" sound too. Hate the band, love the tone, heh.

djent for me is the tone, it's all about the high mids

ah ok -- i love Animals As Leaders -- i just assumed it would fall under 'progressive metal' myself... clearly behind the times  :P

Song of solomon is my favourate track, here is a live version:

I could try it (because your tones are usually good) but I don't know what to play really :P

The best I can do is Architects. Or BTBAM. But I don't know if that's what you're going for.

Oooh, Jonny, that would be great. If I remember correctly, Architects have a kind of djenty sound to some of their stuff. Let me just look up BTBAM... *Google-fu commenceth...* Hmmm, they have nice tone but it's not quite got that djenty quality to it.

Architects pretty much nail it in the first riff of Early Grave though!   :D

[Edit] Just to add, doesn't need to be a whole track or anything, and doesn't need backing. Just a phrase or two with plain ol' axery to get a feel for the sound.  ;)

Ta!

metal sub-genre names are ludicrous (and I actually LIKE metal in most of it's extreme forms, just not that folk/viking b*ollocks).

Agreed, a lot of sub-genre names really are quite poor, heh.

Jonny: Whatever milk's your Guernsey, mate. If the sound that comes out of the speakers sounds anything remotely like that Architects tone then I'm doing something right with the Pod, it's just probably my Axe that needs swapping out.

I was actually playing around with your tones when you gave me the link the other day and it influenced me once again to start writing and one of the songs kinda has a Djenty bit i guess im not 100% sure what djent is lol Jonny will be able to clarify further as he helped with some sections on it

Oh sweet! Can't wait to hear it. Glad I could help with the pursuit of creativity.  :D

So far, from my playing and reading up on tones. It seems your mids are FAAAAR too high. And maybe the drive is a bit high. When I play it like.. Black Dahlia but quieter, haha.

I'll work around the tone issue. Other than that I'm limited on tunings and Architects is all I can manage (which doesn't involve recording) so I can't really do the bloody awesome Periphery or other lesser known bands.

We'll see what happens.

Ultimately I'm having fun on the guitar.

Glad it's generating some fun, heh. The tone thing could be that I wrote it to get the most out of my plank (which I am not sure what woods it is made from, meh.)

I imagine something with more natural mids and a more middy pick-up would completely oversaturate that part of the sound, so do whatever you need to get it right for you, heh.

My recording absolutely $%&#ing sucks. And the tones just aren't working for me now.. :(

Fair, dude, heh.

I just got a reply on the "Got-Djent?" forum from a guy with an Agile and he said "Djenting" with my tone was really easy, so I guess it works for what I need it to do with my new axe when it arrives, heh.

i did  a couple of clips but the pickup and 9s arent ideal for this kinda music :P

the first is your patch with the gain lowered slightly
http://soundcloud.com/tony-boyes/nadz-pb

and this is the same DI run through a preset in Metal Amp Room
http://soundcloud.com/tony-boyes/nadz-mar
Should've probably backed off on the bass a little on this

WOW! Cheers dude, that actually sounds really awesome! Nice choice of track to cover too, Periphery are awesome! I'm going to see them on the 31st in Bristol, they're playing the League of Extraordinary Djentlemen tour with my fave band, Tesseract.  :D
