Title: NGD - an act of Willpower
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on January 22, 2011, 07:34:47 PM
Will on this forum finally got his White Lion this weekend
Our paint-shop finally got the paint finish sorted after much struggling and testing and we are pleased with the result (if not the length of time it took them to nail it)
We were trying to get the Mary Kay see thru white finish
Sometimes the wood looks white and in other light you get a bit more colour of the timber coming through

Here is the finished result :

Pickups are BKP Cold Sweats in Duncan Tripleshot rings

Attention to detail like that is what makes all the difference. That looks absolutely flawless!

You've certainly honed your craft well. This is a wonderful example of loving what you're doing, knowing how to do it and doing it right. It's a beautiful product, sir. Lots of great choices made. The man is lucky to own it.

Nice to hear Will's got his guitar at last!  :D

I like the way the top's got just enough grain to show through the finish.  What is it, "plain" maple?

Wow, once again a really superlative piece of craftsmanship. I've never seen that finish on this style of instrument before. It gives it an almost delicate feel. I really like it very much.

its gorgeous - cant imagine how difficult it was to get that finish to work, but it does!

one of those things people ask for - but dont quite realise how difficult it can be to achieve

Beautiful finish, the paint shop should be commended. Whose concept was it to go for that kind of finish?

Another beautiful guitar, mate. You seem to always turn me on to finishes I wouldn't have given a second thought to usually, heh.

The finish colour was Will's idea
I knew it could be done , and we did it on a tester first
But I rejected a lot of tries to get it right before I was happy we had it right
I just wanted a certain amount of transparency/opaqueness - which we got right in the end
I drove my paint guys mad in the meantime
It's the main reason it took most of this year to perfect the technique.

Thanks so much to Will for his patience - hope the final result is worth it.

Stunning guitar. I like the color, though I'm not to keen on gold parts, but for this guitar it's seems the best choice.

I think the biggest act of willpower is in allowing Will to have the guitar!  There's no way I could do what Jonathan does (aside from the fact that I'm hopelessly inept at woodwork ) - it would break my heart to build such a beautiful guitar, then sell it to someone...

Happy NGD Will :)

I haven't shown the photo here yet , but of course it has my all access neck joint.
The neck is a nice big '59 spec neck but top fret access is still easy

Philly only plays AAAAA grade quilt maple tops or higher.

beautiful guitar Will and Jon, you must be very pleased. I like the finish alot. A V would be cool with that look....

its always interesting to see the guitars that luthiers buy rather than make themselves. Jon and Wez have posted some quite individual stuff here in the past. theres a guitar Jon bought recently that i thinks an absolute joy to play and hear, but enough of that!

lovely looking (and im sure lovely sounding too).

one question tho, the design on the headstock is a lot like the Gibson/Epiphone diamond thing, im guessing this is an intentional nod to them, but wouldnt you have some copyright issues? just wondering, excellent job tho!

I don't normally offer that on my guitars - it was a one off request from Will
Probably wouldn't do that again the same way - would find an alternative /original design

I spend alot of my day mentally spec'ing out Feline guitars I intend to commission...

I would want the space on my Lion headstock to have a version of the "split diamond"

My solution would be to go similar to the Edwards headstock motif

BUT... Use a mother of pearl "3 claw cat scratch!"  :P

None more Feline...
