Title: Getting the toys out
Post by: PhilKing on January 23, 2011, 02:23:13 PM
My wife was away for a bit, so I took advantage to pull a few guitars out.  D 'n L came around and we were playing through my old blackface deluxe.  I took a couple of shots to show how great I am at creating messes!

For some reason the missus isn't happy with this arrangement and wants me to put the guitars away

you could fit a lot more guitars in if you got rid of the couple of sofas and coffee table. Keep the tv, though :D

It's the cases that take up most of room at our place. I need to invent a foldaway guitar.

What would you like to know?

How the Klon and The Klone compared. Really curious as to how close the Klone gets to it. We went as close as we could get to it (component wise) so it shouldn't be a million miles away. Though there inevitably will be some variation.

Really love looking at your collection Phil - takes away any guilt I have about having too many guitars and reassures me that there are people out there who are untidier than me

If your missus lets you have that many guitars, she's a keeper  8)

I used to have the same tv

Hey Phil,

Is that still the same place?  I thought you were moving further out for more room and a studio?

They really sound nothing alike, to my ears. The Klon adds a certain amount of fatness, while still maintaining its transparency (until you really push it, and then the bass falls apart on the Klon). The Klone, when directly compared, sounds very thin and bright and doesn't add any of the perceived girth that the Centaur has.

At lower gain settings, the Maxon OD-820 is virtually indistinguishable from the Klon. After about 60-65% of their ranges in terms of output and gain, they start to differentiate from each other and sound totally different when you really crank them and compare.

Unfortunately, I could not get the Klone to sound anything like the Klon.

I'm surprised there is a vast difference, I can only put it down to magic mojo parts on the original.

Yeah, and knowing how particular the Klon is as far as where it sits in the signal chain, we ran it Klon > Klone, Klone > Klon, and then each one separate.

Phil is going to do me some clips, then I'm going to socket up the one I'm building at the moment and try swapping diodes in and out to see if I can get it closer (it's likely there that the biggest changes will come from).

Here's a note from madbean regarding them:

"The exact germanium diodes used for D1 and D2 is unknown. The designer claims that the use of these diodes is critical to fully realising the tone of the Klon. In practice, there are a number of diodes that can be used that produce good results. these are 1n34a, 1n270, 1n60, BAT41 and 1n914."

Then we'll see if we can't get a little closer to his mojo (bearing in mind I've never had a real one to compare it to and I really quite like how they turned out with the 1n34as that we used).

That was before the crash in house prices.  I'm still wanting to do that, but the market is slow currently and Hoboken prices dropped about 20% from their peak.
