July 11th at Manchester Academy! :D
-
Lucky dawg! Warpaint is a great album.
-
ooo, nice. i'll have to see if they're playing over here
-
6 European dates before they go on another hiatus - I don't know when they last came to UK?
Looks like Manc is sold out already, can't wait!
-
Hope you have a great time Dave. Have you read the article in Guitar Buyer on Rich Robinsons guitar rig? It's pretty good - right up my street with the simple/old school approach.

I saw them in Cardiff in the mid 90's - fantastic - would love to see them again.

Yeah - I liked that too. Proper old skool!
-
Well I've just got back from the gig :D Been waiting ages for today to come round.
Wow. Just wow. Front of house mix was stupendously good, best live sound I've ever heard. Musicianship was amazing, with great interplay across the whole band.
I'll be retiring from work now to:
a) Grow a beard
b) Learn how to play slide
c) Grow some talent
d) Set up a Black Crowes tribute band
One of my top 3 gigs of all time. Outstanding!
-
I'd forgotten about this. I was very jealous when you originally posted and am even more so now! Tribute band sounds like a great idea - not so sure about the beard though!
What were the stand out tracks?
-
I dunno, I think you could rock the beard look.

He'd need to buy Francine back...
-
Ha ha! I reckon I could get away with a beard if need be ;)
Stand out tracks? She Talks To Angels and Jealous Again were my favourites, plus there was a massive 10-15 minute Allman Bros style improv in the middle that was superb 8)
-
Balls, should have gone to this!
I saw them at Glastonbury in 1995 and they were great then in about 2003 with Audly Freed.
Rich Robinson is great!
-
The lead guitarist was even better!

I know I could Wiki it, but is it still that Luther Dickinson(sp?) bloke?
(I almost wrote Luther Grosvenor, from Mott the Hoople! That'd be weird. )
-
Yep, that's the fella. Superb player.
-
Just found this on YouTube from last night 8)

awesome band, always loved the Crowes - saw them back on the first tour and never since - pity they don't do bigger UK tours :(

Great quality clip, and serious beardage!
Nice sounding strat, that...
-
The band was great sounding, I even commented on the bass player when he swapped to a Ric at one point. He used 3 bases for the gig, so I think they're all tone hounds! He had a couple of tasty Greco Zematis gutiars which sounded great with some extra gain.
The whole gig was a showcase for super tasteful playing.
-
They are all total tone hounds by the sound of it. I still regularly read the interview that was in Guitar Player a few months back.
Can't beat a good old dose of tasteful rock guitar. No gimmicks either!
-
Gotta be honest, they're a bit too tasteful for me. I've always wished they'd just rock out a bit more sometimes.

There is no pleasing some people! Jeeeeesus!

I kind of like the Black Crowes - I bought all their albums up to Lions - but I don't love anything they've done (maybe a few bits of The Southern Harmony...).
I'm not saying they're rubbish, it's just a personal thing, but "too tasteful" actually does sum it up pretty well. They have too much soul/gospel, too much of that "Americana" thing for me. I like a bit of rock-star swagger, some unfashionable guitar heroics. Funnily enough, I much prefer some stuff made by ex-Crowes before they joined the Crowes - Burning Tree and Cry of Love.
Sorry! :P
-
Just been watching a few of those vids Dave - very very good indeed.
Philly - I'll have to check out the other stuff you have noted.
-
Just listening to Cry of Love now - Audley Freed is $%ing great on it, I was surprised when he joined the Black Crowes in a relatively low-profile sideman role. This is much more of a guitar-heavy, funky, Hendrix-influenced Eric Gales/Mother Superior kind of vibe.
Now where on earth did I put the Burning Tree album?
-
I can lend you it if you've managed to lose it Philly. Audley is one of the best guitarists I've heard play & a genuinely nice chap to have a chat with
-
Just listened to Cry of Love. Fantastic stuff! God I wish Black Crowes weren't as tasteful in their playing!
All this talk of Audley Freed reminded me of this:

All 6 videos are great!
EDIT - I think this person may have gone too far in their comment about the first vid on youtube "If anyone knows how to contact him please let me know. I would like to share my family with him and my son, Lucas who is 13"
:?

Very nice indeed. I'm pretty amazed that HJ let something so decent go out on the Gibson youtube channel.

See who turned up at the London show

Can't get YouTube at work but I believe it's Jimmy Page?
Gits.
-
Yeah, that's the fella :D
-
Great band. I saw them 10 years ago at Brixton. They were superb. Noel Gallager came on stage with them and the crowd booed him.
