Title: Twinfan finally gets a new car! Woohoo!
Post by: Twinfan on February 07, 2011, 09:42:53 PM
After the guitar sales to fund my new car got diverted into our fantastic Christmas holiday last year, my trusty old V6 MG ZS 180 went and started playing up as soon as 2011 arrived.  Typical   3 new tyres, one new alloy wheel(!) and a crunching gearbox in the first two weeks of January meant it was time to bite the bullet and find something else.

I was hoping to keep it running for another 6 months or so, but decided the current "no VAT" new car deals were too good to pass up.  Completely by chance (some may call it fate???) the exact colour and spec model I was after was one of only 3 pre-built cars ready to go for the UK market.  I couldn't resist a 3 week rather than 3 month(!) wait, so Mrs Twinfan agreed to bail me out if I needed a few quid in the short term.  The Christmas holiday obviously worked as nice sweetener  ;)

I picked it up on Saturday, and currently sat on my drive is a 60 plate 2.0ltr TFSI petrol manual Skoda Octavia vRS in Race Blue with parking sensors and a maxidot trip computer.  I'm chuffed to bits  :D  I can even get all my gig gear in the cavernous boot!

Here's some pics of the same model I've got that I nicked off the web.  They're a darn sight nicer than the Skodas of old!!!

Very nice mate - Jane's parents have a new Skoda and it's great. Very well built, decent price and a great performer. MAssively underrated cars.

Christ on a stick with blunt nails hammered in by judas, you've bought a Skoda!

I don't know much about cars at all, but I think Skoda have done a very good job of improving their image and reputation over the years!

It's important enough to say twice! That's a $%&#ing Skoda!

Cheers Matt and Shobet - I knew you'd take the piss!  And yes, I suppose I am middle management!

The thing is, I'm not taking car abuse from someone who drives a hairdressers car...  ;)

Nice car dave.

You might notice people slowing down around you on the motorway as all the unmarked cop cars around me are Octavia VRs'.

I'm goin to be in the market for a new car in the summer. I'm currently smitten with the mazda 3 MPS.

I hope you enjoy it when you get it!

looks a bit boy-racer and lairy as well as being middle-management. i assume it has a fancy engine in it? i used to be all into cars, but since moving to london i've lost all interest. nevertheless, i would be chuffed to drive that thing! congrats.

Kieran - I've already got it!  I almost went for a white one for that pseudo copper look, but decided it would be a bit too similar to all the taxis round my way

gwEm - it's a hot-hatch for (slightly) grown up people.  I had loads of trouble deciding what to buy as:

a) I'm too old for a hot-hatch
b) Have no need of a family lugging people carrier
c) Too poor for a supercar
d) Too young for something sensible

I have a need for one of those and have just bought a Chrysler Grand Voyager. It's quite big.

They're ENORMOUS, aren't they?

I went for the small/large family car - a Toyota Verso.

Thing is - I just can't get excited about cars.  They leave me pretty cold.  Guitars - yes.  Motorbikes - yes.  The perfect Lasagne - yes.  But not cars.  To me they're just utilitarian machines to get me and my family safely and cheaply from A to B.

Saying that Dave, your Skoda looks nice!  They've come on in leaps and bounds since the FSO days...

I nearly had one of these (not the VRs though) but they ended the company car scheme early and I didn't get my order in on time.  Waiting for the new list to come through now, so god knows what I'll get.

I can recommend my mate over at Revo.  They'll have that thing knocking out 270hp(ish) by remapping the ECU.

240bhp - outrageous! Do you really need all that power?

Revo are supposed to be the nuts.  If you look in their site, they have the power and torque graphs.  Available power is usually a lot lower down too.

They had my mates Leon normally running at 360bhp and it was a right beast.  They put on F1 style traction conytrol where it cut cylinders.

They do a control unit so you can have multiple settings (power, standard and econamy) too.

Shobert - I bought the wife a Yaris.  Wicked little cars and more room inside than my Astra.

They're massively underrated because they weren't VWs. Now they are VWs.

And not to rub it in Dave, but my mum got her delivery of the new Audi TT Sport :B
I like your car though!

(and we also got a new VW Polo for sister and me, that doesn't have A/C but like that's needed in good ol' Britiain - all it needs is windows.)

Yep. My massively underrated comment was about the stigma attached to the brand name i.e. they are different now but some people still focus on the brand rather than the product.

This.

I love the idea of fast cars, I love Top Gear (okay that's not really about cars though!), I'll happily watch motor racing if I have some free time...
But when it comes to buying a car for myself, I want a small, economical (fun to drive, sure), reliable car that is not going to cost me the earth.

I didn't need the motorway, just some enthusiastic driving on the dual carriageway near me.  Blue vRS, bloke driving, in dark clothes.

Everybody seemed to move out the way nice and quickly...

Is this the new Skoda model with 12 valves, (four of them in the radio?)  :)

(Sorry that was the only Skoda joke I could remember)

Anyone else think the line down the side above the door handles has a hint of volvo to it?

The colour might be but the lines are completely different, the lights are obviously a lot more modern too

Not really a fan of MGs but your hot Skoda says something like "Well I could have bought a VW... but I wanted something more exclusive"

What do you think to Mazdas?

We've had 3 of them
We have a Mazda 2 sport at the mo. I know it's a Ford Fiesta with a Mazda badge on, but it is a pokey little thing if you thrash it

Nice choice of wheels -- the vRS in both Fabia and Ocvtavia styles are a good car all round, and fairly nippy aswell. My friend nearly went for a Fabia vRS but went for a Seat Ibiza FR instead, another of the VW group cars.

I've just picked up a new car for myself, replacing my redundancy enforced Peugeot 206 shed hatch (no offence to fellow Pug owners, but i've been spoiled by cars since passing my test!)

I went for a 2003 Subrau Impreza WRX -- the 3rd Subaru Impreza i've owned and the best --- it actually has up-rated 8 pot brakes and will stop from 60mph fast enough to make you feel sick -- and it's not to shabby going forward either   Just need to beef the stereo up so i can blast my death metal out at all the boy racers

Had a 2005 WRX myself. Loved it when I had it. How those things go in the wet is just obscene. A few things made me sell it though. It's stratospheric running costs. The tax, insurance, servicing and the rate it gobbles fuel is mental. The other was the attention it got. Not only from every chav in a Corsa, but from the light fingered members of the community. After scaring off someone braking into the house for the keys, I just decided it wasn't worth it and sold it. Don't regret it for a second however, it was a great, great car... If a little ugly ;)
