Title: The house is burning - which one do you grab?
Post by: Twinfan on February 24, 2011, 08:44:36 AM
It's been a while since we did one of these, plus we have a lot of new members, so let's see where we're all at with our #1 guitars  :)

The house is burning, you have one hand free and you can only grab one guitar to save.  No ifs, no buts, no maybes.  One only.

Which do you grab?

For me, it has to be the one I play the most at home.  The one I lusted after for 6 months before selling my Ducati and buying it.  It's the one in my avatar, my Gibson Billy Gibbons "Pearly Gates" Signature '59 Reissue Les Paul #240 - "Francine".  What's yours?

If I only had one hand free I would have to finish and clean up first... then decide.

Interesting way of putting out a fire Dave!

Only have one guitar (for now), so i'd save my RG7321

Probably still my Epiphone LP Custom. Although I never play it much any more it's still the guitar I feel most attached to.

One of these two, whichever was nearest at the time.

We stay in Lester territory for mine Dave. It's not my No.1 player, but it is my No.1 'owner' .

A humble 1997 Les Paul Standard in ( I believe ) Honey / Desert burst . Pickups are B.K.P Mules.

A Les Paul for me too. I'd leave a 57 RI Custom to burn and grab my routed 71 GT. Save a Norlin and burn a CS RI, am I mad ?

Cracking guitars folks!

I'd burn to death. :)

I think I'd probably grab my Ibanez RG670DX for two reasons; firstly, it was a birthday present from my ex-wife and still holds some sentimental value as well as being an excellent guitar, and secondly it's currently living in its case within easy reach on my way to the door, whereas for my other guitars I'd have to scrabble around in the cupboard, increasing my risk of burning to death. :)

I only have two guitars now: an Ibanez Gio and a Parker Fly. It's not really a hard choice

It will probably be whatever is closest out of these three:

Although since they are normally in the rack with straps on I would stick two around my neck and grab the other one   :D

my 1984 Flying V:

Its had a few mods recently:

Neck pickup wired in parallel (by me)
Fret dress, tone pro's bridge, tone pro's tune-a-matic (all by Feline, great work!!)

Well I don't count my stage backup ibanez as being a guitar really, it's just a backup, so it'd be my one and only: Vociferator!

easy choice, my 1990 Les Paul Standard - looks like its been to hell and back, but its my fave guitar and sounds amazing.

er... data is more import than guitars so either grab the pc and have no spare hands for guitars, or unscrew the hard drive and die in the fire in an attempt to have a free hand :(

From what I hear, there isn't a single hard drive big enough to house that collection :D

Easy choice for me Dave.  It's my one and only - the Baja Tele. Even though it's my only guitar I love it.

That LP of yours is soooooo sexy. Even looking at it makes me drool.

Title: Re: The house is burning - which one do you grab?
Post by: AndyR on February 24, 2011, 07:11:10 PM
Probably has to be my 60s Roadworn strat...

But really, if the place was going down (and the amps, modellors, and everything else was going) I'd probably grab an acoustic - at least I'd be able to play the next day, the strat on it's own wouldn't be much use

The Table. It's a ridiculously butchered, tortured mess of a thing. But it's my ridiculously butchered, tortured mess of a thing. I love it beyond any sort of reason for the mongrel that it is.

Doesn't look much like when I first bought it (don't have a pic of it with it's original pups as they were dreadful and went on ebay instantly).

Gaffer tape was getting tatty on it and I fancied a change. Was going to paint it but one thing led to another and it ended up naked.

This guitar feels better than any other I've ever played.

The poor thing has had a dremmel taken to it and effects shoved in it's cavity amongst other indignities. It's currently recovering from that violation with more switching combos than you could possibly imagine. Though different to the Jimmy Paige wiring, it's actually easy to remember where everything is. The other one I have doesn't fair much better (has a Tele, Strat and GFS Dynasonic rip off pup in it. Still got it's clothes on though).

It stops me me messing with the nicerer axes.

I'd agree as it goes, I've hours of recorded music, all backed up several times, like, but all those backups would be in the same flat as the guitars. And the guitars are insured, all the music isn't.

I'd probably take certain vinyl before guitars, too.

I don't really get attached to guitars though, they're just things that I make the stuff I'm attached to with.

I suppose if I had an irreplaceable guitar it would make a difference but with 1TB of data, I could probably recover 90% of it but it would be a lot of hassle.

My Esquire has some very personal mods, it cannot be replaced. I can't put 777 on one with a different serial number and the zinc plate 7K Blakguard pickup will have to be a custom order.

SG400s in tobacco sunburst are hard to find.

But it's my Gretsch Power Jet I love the most.

I guess I'll have to choose the first one I can grab.

Up until a month ago I'd have said my mid sixties Epiphone Wilshire but if it were to happen today it would be my Dubreuille Telecaster I'd grab first.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5400744729_826505c7ef_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_atrocity/5400744729/in/set-72157625819361721/)

It's possible that I'm still in the honeymoon period of ownership and if you ask me this question again in six months I might answer different but this Tele is so light, versatile, playable and good looking that it's my current No. 1.

In terms of value, the sensible choice would be to grab the Tyler.

However.... I haven't been playing much lately (not that I ever play much), but when I am in the mood my "go-to" guitar always seems to be the cherry Epi Jr.  Don't know why really!

not true. that headstock works really well with the extra-rounded tele body. YMMV :-P

I love the Tyler for it sounds and craftmanship. And no, the headstock doesn't match the body at all, but somehow it doesn't bother me. I mean, Barbara Streisand has a big nose, but as soon she starts singing I forget about that.

We'll be dammed together then Philly ; as for me she had that whole 'Siamese cat ' thing going on with the eyes and nose. I like a pretty face that does not look like the last 1,000 ( somewhat manufactured or uniformly ) pretty faces I saw before it. I like a quirky and memorable face, it is much more lovable, more enduring.  The song " Funny Valentine" says it all for me.  :)

If not, then my Indie because my dad bought me it.
