Makes any guitar go djent

I've seen these clips. I've never seen one anywhere. small canadian builder though so not surprising.
I think the Natas is the result of the Fortin Hulk mod. some re-engineered marshall kind of thing with some Garnet tone controls for the girth and grind. Also a fancy bias circuit.
I quite like the idea of the Fortin Bones, the Meathead isn't my thing. I think with a lot of these high gain amps, they have so much gain its just crazy. I think the Natas can do some sensibly heavy tones though... getting one would probably cost a bomb.
-
Sounds perfect for metal, but I prefer my gain flabby loose and out of control!
-
the Bones would definitely give me a boner! :D
all Fortin amps and mods have a similar tight and modern character, but I like the british vibe and simple features of the Bones
I'm not into the new wave of metal/hard rock boutique amp fanboyism at all (Larry, Friedman, Diezel, Cameron...), but Mike is one of the most polite and helpful guys on amp forums, and a true amp affictioned
when he started making amps, everyone (myself included) though he was intending to ripoff some of his expensive stuff in his huge amp collection (dozens of wizards, diezels, larrys, VHT's, bogners, soldanos), but he managed to create his own signature tone and he seems to have a lot of fun in coming up with new mods and tons of features
I have a friend that is spending some time in Toronto, so I asked him to visit Mike's place and record some video 8)

I read that as forty nanas.

And here's one using a Bare Knuckle
Mmmmm sustainy

My current favourite is the Splawn Nitro w/ KT88s but the NATAS is very interesting indeed. And yeah it's $3800. Ugh!
-
well, you still can have virtually any other amp modded by him to a similar tone for a somewhat fair price
you could buy something that's already in canada and send it to him

That's an interesting idea if you ask me. The Nitro's transparent low-mids with the Natas' metallic high-mids? Oh yeah, I'd say!

the Nitro has a quite different texture, since it doesn't have a cathode follower
wiring a cathode follower would already change the Splawn character a lot
I'd send him a cheaper and more mod friendly amp, like a JMP or an used JCM reissue or something
I've listened to some Marshall Vintage Modern and Bogner Uberschall modded by him and he always manage to impose his mighty growly tone
a cheap good alternative would be a Jet City amp, for example, or some used old Ampeg VL (they go for $300-$500 on ebay and craigslist)
-
Jet City would be a good idea, but I would have thought a JMP or JCM would be better. PCB based amps being more hard work to mod than others. The Hulk Modded superlead is (I believe) the precursor to the Natas. I think it was close to a total rebuild of the amp that was modded. This is the one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dD4SauyEBb8
It's most likely easier to mod an amp like that then a PCB based Jet City... not saying that he couldn't mod a jet city and make it sound even better though.
As for the Nitro, the plate driven tone stack isn't the only thing going on in that amp from what I've read. It has some other things that aren't really typical for a marshall, or many other amps. for example, I think it has really large value coupling caps between the PI and output valves grids, which probably explains the some of the low end. I think it has 3 triode stages that share the same cathode resistor too. I'd think things like that might make it more of an issue to mod to the region of the Natas.
If you like plate driven tone you could considering a more inexpensive plate driven amp... like a Sovtek Mig 100. If you're really interested you could also email Mike Fortin, tell him what you like of his, what else you like, ask him what he can do with particular amps to get what you want. He might have some suggestions of amps you could send to him.

The fred ones sound pretty good, but almost the same as my tungsoled powerball.
The rest sound like a peavey bandit...but sort of....worse
I dont get the fuss
-
Ah thx for the advice everyone! Anyway it's a bit early (funds) for me to get into something like that yet. But I'll have these in mind in case I wanna do it later.
I'm in the process of getting my guitar's parts right now. Still on the guitar phase...
...after that it'll be the amp's turn... then a wah and a reverb and be set. phew

all marshalls are PCB since mid 1973, except the overpriced handwired reissues

How much for that beastie?

I think it's like £3000. Not entirely sure but it's pricey any way.
-
Yeah just found this: http://www.tonemerchants.com/products/amplifiers/dar/forza/

I'm going to sound stupid here but are there any clips of these amps being played clean?
Or are they just £3000 distortion pedals with a power amp at the other end?
-
The DAR's are output transformer-less, right? I prefered the Fortin videos.
I like fortin modded 800 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opxcniXR3hw

I'm thinking of the older ones then... so probably a bit steep to buy for a mod! My point still stands. PCB is harder to mod than other build styles and getting in touch with Fortin about to find out what is good amp to take a particular mod is probably a good idea.

Does every amp have to do clean? I feel like "distortion pedal" is a bit of an over simplification of a high gain preamp.
EDIT: for £3000 you want it to do something pretty well!

95% of the Fortin modded amps I've seen were 100% PCB
his own amps are PCB as well
he mods Bogners, that are quite a pain in the ass to work (mounted tubes, mounted pots, scratched components, some boards with the parts facing the inside of the amp)
Jet City amps are much more simple and easier to tweak

Well without a reasonable clean sound they just strike me as a bit of a one-trick pony, hence the distortion pedal analogy. Maybe it is an over simplification but if the preamp doesn't do clean tones then isn't that by definition an over-simplified amplifier?
EDIT: for £3000 you want it to do something pretty well!
EDIT: For £3000 I want it to do everything very well. For that much money I want clean, crunch, distortion, a switch that makes me play better, a bum note filter and a groupie magnet. And I want the amp to carry itself into gigs and tune my guitars for me.
-
Fair enough he mods them. I'm just saying modding PCB's is harder than modding eyelets or turrets. Nothing wrong with using PCB's. It's a testament to say he can works on Bogners and such. The Uberschall I had looked like a nightmare to get into. Doing intensive mods on PCB amps must be hard work. Especially is its things like the Bogners or Dual Rec's, or stuff using double sided PCB's and so on.
I haven't really into the Fortin stuff much. I like the idea of the Bones, being a single channel amp with a lot of options for added stuff, and his mods sound good, but thats all. I didn't know his gain circuit was vastly different to any other common ones. Is there a place where the Fortin stuff is discussed more?

haha. true! SLO100 and Decatone are about £3K. How much is the Herbert? all those have clean crunch and lead right? now we have robot guitars maybe someone will make an amp that tunes your guitar via bluetooth or something! £3K for a single channel amp is a lot. I like simplified amps but I wouldn't call some of those lead circuits simple, although some of the best ones are! Probably why so many things that make good rock or metal amps pop up all the time across manufacturers.

On Rig-talk,everybody used to talk about Fortin ,esp. when the Natas came out 8)...It's very much appreciated there but i didn't look recently.

aaah.
I only really use this forum. The natas isn't really my thing. I do like the modded 800 though

Well that answers the question very nicely.
First clip, lovely.
Second clip ... meh, scratchy trebly for 38 seconds before someone says "MAX OUT DA GAAAAAIN" then it's high gain and scratchy trebly, not my all-time favourite guitar sound.
Third clip managed a whole 36 seconds of very nice clean tone before someone pushed the wardrobe over and hey, we're doing the Saturday morning guitar store boogie again and I honestly wasn't madly taken with that distortion tone. Maybe I could tweak it into something usable.
I suspect these amps aren't aimed at strat and tele players though.
EDIT: oh wow

This clip is just ... dreadful. The sound, the "tone", the "playing", everything. Just dreadful.
Is it meant to sound like that? It sounds broken. I used to get that exact tone plugging my plywood Hondo Les Paul copy through the mic input of my parents' stereo when I was 13.

I have a TSL601. I wonder if Fortin can make it sound like that... I guess he can.

Spider 4 is 80% of the way there at less than 10% of the price. Save yourself some money!

my friend in Toronto tried to get Fortin to Hulk mod him a Jet City amp this week, but Mike said he's not taking mod orders right now cause he started a big Natas production and won't have time for mods for the next weeks
he's also not making the Hulk mod anymore, since apparently the Natas includes part of the Hulk circuit
-
Thats reminds of something I'd read. I new some of those mods you can find on youtube were the starting point of the Natas but I didn't know he'd stopped doing that mod until now. I can't remember where I read a lot about it (the natas). I knew the Girth and Grind controls were related to some Garnet amps tone circuits because I read some online discussion that included mike fortin.

that was probably the thread where Larry accused Mike of copying his Dino's bite/punch circuit just based on the fact that Fortin amps kicked Larry's ass on some amp shootout and that the Hulk also had a bass/treble tweaker
Mike educately responded and pointed where he got the idea of using a pre-gain EQ
he's a big Larry fan, and it's sad that Larry is such a douchebag now
I was a big Larry fan also, and 30% of what I know about amp circuits, I learned from his once helpful posts on a couple forums
I tried to contact him twice to ask for a simple opinion, and he was quite rude, unlike Fortin
-
Man that sucks. Frank who posts as JPF on here has helped me a lot. I've tried to take in as much as I can from books and online and such, but having access to the opinion of someone who has tried a lot of stuff out just makes things a hell of a lot easier to understand, for me at least.
The Larry amps look REALLY nice. It's easy to see why the cost is so high in stuff like that. Great parts, put together SO well. Everything thought out. I have a Garnet circuits PDF with loads of schematics in. If you take the time to go through it you can find lots of nice little ideas. Pretty cool stuff. It makes a change to seeing variations on a theme. I wish I knew enough to design something great from scratch.
It's nice when these guys are open to being asked questions or participate on forums, even when swamped with amp orders and having to work 18 hour days.

I#ve had some email discussions with Mike Fortin over my Steavens amp. He's a totally great guy, super passionate and straightforward. No hesitations to deal with him anyday for amp business.
