Title: @StefanPrice - Down to the waterline
Post by: TobiH on February 28, 2011, 12:02:52 PM
Hi

You've nailed that sound perfectly - I see that you use BK pups - are they in that guitar? Is it just a normal strat or is it the MK Signature Version with BK in it instead of the Texas Specials.

Newbie question, but this whole discussion of pups, woods (ash/alder/etc), fretboards, etc. and their effect on sound is still a mystery to me....when I play everything sounds bad ;)

Thx
T

did a little - well a lot - of digging on the forum and found the answer myself:

"Amp/effects.
I use a Line 6 Flextone 2, 60 watt combo.
Also a Pod XT-Live.

Why did I choose the Apache's over the Sultans?
Well I couldn't choose, Tim suggested the apache's as I wanted the vintage sound such as with Mark's 61 strat, so I went with those.
I wanted my MK sig Strat to have the vintage sound of the guitar it was based on rather than the Texas Specials that are stock on the model.

I think, and I could be wrong, that Tim named the Sultans, Sultans because they are the cleanest pickups (Alnico 2), and people associate Sultans of swing as one of the most recogisable clean classic strat sounds.

Mark did and still does use Alnico 2 pickups in his main Schecter strats they are Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro 2.
I wanted a pickup that would be the closest to originals for the sig model.

Stef."

and this:

My Apache's are not  RPRW.
Tim suggested that I went for the non-RW/RP.

I'm not sure where the track you're commenting on is, but I can confirm that my Apaches (non-RW/RP) get me the early Knopfler tone a lot faster than my Sultans.

I'm thinking of swapping them between the guitars at some point to see what happens!
