Title: Mules: Swedish-style high-gain
Post by: Nolly on March 10, 2011, 12:15:40 PM
Hey dudes,

Here's a brief Killswitch Engage-style clip I knocked up to show how how my Blackmachine B2 copes with high gain tones despite having low-output Bare Knuckle "The Mule" pickups.
I'm using the Soldano SLO100 model on the Axe-FX, through a Redwire Soldano 4x12 cabinet. Drums are S2.0 as per usual.

Cheers!

:o I love it. The pinches had an authority to them. BKP site says bridge Mules are 8.4K, would they still have these characteristics you've presented if wound to 11 or 12?

Great Mix as always Nolly, when i eventually get round to an Axe-FX purchase (need to get a mortgage and diamond first ) I'll be racking your brains for your tone tips!

Thanks! I believe it wouldn't be possible to wind 42AWG plain enamel up to 11 or 12kΩ, IIRC there simply wouldn't be enough room on the bobbin. If you were to move to a thinner wire it would change the tonal characteristics significantly and besides, if you were to do this I think the with the Mule's AIV magnet, the low end response would be significantly looser.
If you want a traditional PAF voicing but with more meat and output, try the Black Dog :)

Hah, sure, just chuck me an email at nolly[at]redseasfire[dot]co[dot]uk when the time comes!
...and congratulations (if I've interpreted correctly!)

Nolly, that crunch and harmonics are superb. This clips underlines how great and versatile Mules are. When I come over my strat- and tele-disease, Mules are on top of the list for a mahagony-guitar.

Thanks Telerocker :) Yes there really is nothing they can't do when run through an appropriate setup.

Awesome tone from my favourite bkp set :D  I'm so used to them sounding "classic rock" with my amp that I forget what they can sound like through something more modern!

the SLO is a modified 5150 ain't it?

I like the hannes, first time I tried one I didn't really notice it because I'm used to floyds but having played Nolly's Daemoness 7 and then the 6, the hannes is so much more comfortable to me

Thanks :)

JacksonRR, I love the Hannes. Not only insanely comfortable, but really imparts and incredible richness, presence and quick response without ever being harsh.

you know nolly, i'm really glad i'm not the only low tuned metal player that reallllly loves his low outputs. my black dog is definitely staying in my 7 string and i put my neck riff raff into the bridge of my 8 string to replace my cold sweat which was too hot. even if it's a neck pickup, it works really well, but the real thing must kill, can't wait to have the cash to order it

awesome tones!

Thanks Kevan!
While I do love these low outputs, that's not to say that I dislike the more contemporary pickups in the range - both have their place as fas as I'm concerned :)

The original BKP humbucker pickup and possibly still the best. Beauty !

The original pickup was a Miracle Man, but that doesn't make the Mules any less awesome ;)

Thanks dude, it's in drop-D. It's hard to go wrong with Mules in an LP, it'd definitely be worth strong consideration!

I just discovered how good miracle men were on my ESP LP, just nails that spongy Pkway Drive tone and as the Bdog did not really do it on my gibson LP I'm seeking new pickups. I'm always amazed on how you get those vintage babies to sound so massive on modern tunes.

Hmm, well something worth bringing up is that this recording is quad-tracked, which naturally makes the guitars sound thicker and smoother with a squishier attack (due to the human error between the takes).
If you want to achieve a sound such as Adam D's signature massive wall of rhythm tracks with just one guitar, then a pickup like the Miracle Man or Warpig will get you there no doubt.

If you're interested, this is what just one of the guitar tracks sounds like:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/790683/Swedish%20B2%20single%20GTR.mp3

You can really hear the more dynamic attack (as in, you can hear a fair amount of inconsistency in my picking  ), and really extreme clarity on the big open chord in the second riff.

One GTTrack or not its still percussive as hell. Its a bit more spongy and less tight than the comtemporary units but still ! This sound has cleary balls and low end. If you did not write they were mules I assume I'd said this was a miracle man with alnico magnet.

Well, interestingly I actually recorded a comparison clip with a friend's Miracle Man-loaded custom guitar:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/790683/Swedish%20MM%20single%20GTR.mp3

The difference is actually rather small, but you can really hear that lower mid push on the Miracle Man clip. We can't really draw comparison on the character of the palm mutes though since it was an unfamiliar guitar so my right hand mute placement was undoubtedly different.

I admit the mule clip sounds clearer. You can feel its less compressed and breathes more, indeed on that raw open chord before the harmony you can clearly ear the difference imo.

Yeah, both have qualities I like. It'd be interesting to hear the Blackmachine with a Miracle Man in it, but I'm too happy with the Mules to do that any time soon.
