Title: what a bloody relief!
Post by: WezV on March 18, 2011, 12:05:20 PM
well, i just walked out on my job/teacher training course!

I was doing well before xmas, but since then its not been going right and i was getting massive criticism for everything i did.  initially some was justified and i took major steps to put it right, felt like it was getting better but the massive criticism didnt go away and was starting to feel very personal

today i thought 'screw it, there has to be a better option than this!'

i dont know what that option is yet but i am confident i will find something to tide me over, and hopefully a new career :)

feels empowering and scary all at the same time - but i know it was the right choice because i suddenly feel healthy and alive again!

now - where to start finding a job???

Good man. I recently quit my job to do audio engineering, production, teching and teaching. Its so much better I cant even begin to tell you. Mainly because I hated the place I worked (as opposed to my job, which wasnt too bad) so much I cant even tell you

Before you say it, I know there are (much) better out there at those things, but I live in west cumbria; I dont have a tremendous amount of competition

Just trying to build it up now, get my name out: its going surprisingly well!

I know what you mean about the 'healthy and alive again'. I really didnt realise how down I was from where I worked and the lifestyle it forced. It sharpens the senses and motivates you that much more that your success or failure depends entirely on what you do, off your own back, when a salary isnt coming in every month, too. More like 'real' living, if that makes the blindest bit of sense; you get back in proportion to what work you do.

Clearly you must invest all your time into luthiery, finances allowing.

Cheers guys! - i do hope this will allow more time for guitar stuff, but my main priority is to get some money coming in first

its the beer festival tonight - so i reckon a blowout is in order!

going to apply for some jobs this afternoon (anything!) and move forward from there

Big move, Wez.

Was it just the school, or teaching in general that you're hacked off with?

well i had always done well in other schools so i need to have a think if education is something i want to continue with, maybe in another role - at the moment i am really not sure, ruling nothing out

Best of luck for the future mate - a big move, but possibly the best one of your life?

Good luck Wez. If the worse comes to the worse you can come up Manchester way and hock your arse on canal st for a pound or two. I'm told Matt does very well out of it.

With Canal Street being right next to the bus station I've had more than a few pints there.  I think I stick out as straight as I'm a scruffy bar-steward and drink pints.

Good move Wez.  I used to work at a place that was making me miserable to the point of being ill.  I was tied into the contract so had to wait it out for a couple of months before I could quit, but I remember the relief when I told the boss that I was off.  Sometime's it's just better to get the hell out of there.

Burton must have pretty good beer festivals, hope it provides some clarity

You'd be surprised! My lezza took me around gay town in Liverpool the other week and in some places, the way they look doesn't fit the stereotype at all.

Nice one Wez!!! Moar guitar making!!!

I hope you land on your feet soon as far as jobs go, though. Nowt worse than the wait for stuff like that.

Did the course tutor have something against you, do you think? Might be worth seeing if you have grounds for complaint.

That's a brave thing to Wez but if it feels right then it is right.  I've only ever handed my notice in once with nothing already lined up but it was the best decision I made that year.  All the best.

Clarity from a beer festival?? I don't think you're doing it right then.

Brave move!  More than I would ever dare to do.

It would be great if there was some way you could turn the guitar building into (more of) a full time job.

Hi Wez,  I hope you get something lined up soon.  It sounds like this has been taking a lot out of you and if you think that the stuff is getting personal too, then getting out of it might be the right thing.  Could you go back to your other job (even if it's just as an interim thing to tide you over)?

Anyway, have a few pints at the beer fest for me.  One day I'll have to come over when I don't have to drive and we can have several pints at the pub we were at with all the ale in barrels in the living room!

Cheers
Phil

btw - please don't work on any of my guitars after the beer fest!

Don't be silly - he has a wife to support and a mortgage (not advisable if you are a luthier)

yeah, unfortunately jonathan is correct... not unfortunate that i have a wife and house, but unfortunate that going into building guitars full time is not a realistic option - thats one of the reasons i finally decided to do something about my career in the first place - just turns out this wasnt it!

my wife is being supportive - turns out she was quite worried about me the last few weeks and since she just got a promotion we know we could survive just on her wages - not sure she would be happy about me being a house husband though ;)

thanks everyone !   the new CV is written and already been sent off to a few officey type jobs - might be quite nice to get back to working in an office!  either way i think i would prefer a new path

in reality, the biggest loss will be the holidays

Wez - Nice one for following your heart. If you fancy building another La Cabronita clone I'll be on hand to buy it!

Very pleased for you Wez - there's not many things (in a professional working sense) than feeling like that. I actually like working in an office, I've had my ups and downs over the last few years and have thought about moving to a different industry altogether but each time have realised that I'm fairly good at what I do and that I have a family to support (with a mortgage) and I wouldn't be able to afford a move!

Well done - will be interested to hear what you end up doing!

damn it matt - that was my next move - gotta be less painful than the buggering i have had for the last month!

didnt make it to the beer festival tonight.  Chinese takeaway was late and we went to a local who had pretty good beer but insisted on playing white reggae for far too long so we headed back home to hit the sloe gin & vodka mixes

Good luck Wez. It's a brave move. So many of us on here are having job problems these days.
Use what you've got, like private tutor perhaps? All the best.

You did the right thing. Taking abuse is the start of a very dangerous cycle. Better to brave it out on your own then become a victim of some small minded butt-head's vitriol!

well uni were very helpful today - they have offered me a leave of absence with the opportunity to redo the placement at a different school in september or next january

still not sure what i want to do - but its nice to know i can try something else for a while and still have the opportunity to go back if i decide i hate a real 9-5 job with no holidays ;)

That sounds like a bit of a result - options in hand :D

Try to make sure that, when you do decide, you've managed to carefully weigh up what you'd like to do against what you think you need to do (if they're different!). It seems to be so easy for all of us to end up doing something that's "OK" (or worse) because we didn't make an "active" decision at some point... and you only realise years later when that point was and maybe what the other options were...

Sounds like a) you've got a breathing space to weigh up your options, and b) you're gonna use it well :D

Good luck!

nice

it's always worth asking what your options are, sometimes they can surprise you with how accommodating they're willing to be...
